  • 7 Simple Recipes to Bless a New Mom last edited on 5/28/13

Sharing the Love, Sharing the Food   When I was pregnant with AnaBella, my first child, I had just begun attending a church of a few hundred people. There were many young families that cared for and supported each other in the months following the birth of their children. One of my new friends, a young mom with a daughter under a year, asked how many meals a week I’d like, and for how many weeks, after AnaBella's birth. I had no idea what my recovery would be like, but was hesitant to ask anything of moms who already had their hands full. So my friend decided and organized...

  • Connecting Cultures through Cookies last edited on 10/23/12

Peiling, Stock Free Images Here’s a fun story to help non-Muslim children learn about Eid al-Fitr – the celebration taking place at the end of the Ramadan fast.  In Indonesia, this celebration is called Lebaran, or Idul Fitri. This story is based in part on my experience living in a one room house with a family of 6 Indonesians for 4 months in a remote village in West Kalimantan. Together with my host family, I baked (and mostly ate) countless Lebaran cookies. What similarities can your child find to how your family celebrates special occasions? MONKEY COOKIES C is for...

  • Almond Flour Cookies last edited on 10/23/12

Recently I’ve been cutting down on grains and I LOVE this Almond Flour Cookie recipe. There are few things better than enjoying a crunchy, chewy cookie with a cup of tea on a rainy night. If you bake or cook with almond flour you already know how pricy it can be. I get around this by making my own from whole or sliced almonds. Just make sure they’re peeled. When you buy them in bulk at your local health food store, you’ll save big time. No need to purchase almond flour from Amazon or spend $11 on a little bag at Whole Foods. The most important thing to remember when making your own...

  • Gingerbread Molasses Cookies last edited on 11/30/12

The weather is nippy and crisp and these super duper cookies sound great to me. I’m going to make a batch. Fresh ginger root and molasses and teff flour (say what?) give these chewy cookies many flavor tones.  Teff flour is one of the base ingredients for injera – that stretchy bread that comes with Ethopian food.  Teff is also high in iron content for a grain.   Maybe all that iron, calcium and B vitamins will help Jane get her voice back?  For the printable recipe, go here.     About Cynthia Lair Cynthia Lair's web cooking show Cookus Interruptus brings humor to...
