Pros: Great preparation for breastfeeding, answers questions that come up

Cons: Not sure how helpful for serious feeding issues

I loved this book -- I read it while I was pregnant & found it really helped me prepare for a successful breastfeeding relationship. The book is honest, doesn't sugar coat the routine issues that new mothers sometimes face.   Maybe why I love the book so much is that I really believe it saved my ability to breastfeed my son. I took it with me to the hospital. A pushy nurse was trying to get me & DH to give our newborn formula because he had dropped weight & my milk hadn't come it yet. She brought in a can with a nipple & was really scaring me. DH was ready to give it to DS. Well, in my new mama fogginess, I vaguely remembered something in the La Leche book about...

Loved the Moby Wrap!

Posted

Pros: Great for bonding, hands-free, napping is easy, great support

Cons: Hot in summer months, takes practice

I loved the Moby with DS. He always loved being in it, from day 1 (well, almost... maybe it was day 5...). I liked that the Moby offers full back & shoulder support, which allowed for long walks, long naps, chores around the house, etc.   There's a lot of fabric, which means two things: 1. It can get hot during the summer months. In fact, I usually got too hot wearing DS before my back ever started to hurt. 2. It also takes a lot of practice to get efficient at tying it & getting all the different holds down. But there are many options once you do--It's really versatile! I loved tying it on DH for him to wear DS (DH always got frustrated trying to tie it himself). ...

Great quick & easy wrap

Posted

Pros: Easy, compact, comfy for baby

Cons: Can be hard on your back

I loved this wrap when DS was really young. He slept on me constantly in it & it was the only way I could sometimes get him to nap (or get things done around the house.   I liked that as a woven wrap I could always make it tight & secure. Also, the material is so breathable, yet strong, that it was perfect in the hot summer months for long periods of time.   Like any sling that goes over just one shoulder, it can be hard on your shoulder & back, especially as your LO starts to grow (and gain weight!). But wearing it as the instructions tell you to DOES help reduce discomfort.   Plus it was super easy to just toss in a bag if I was heading to the...

Great diaper pail solution!

Posted

Pros: Easy to empty, hangs anywhere, wide opening

Cons: May leak at zipper

This is a great solution for a low-profile diaper pail. You can hang it over a doorknob or, as we do, put a hook on the side of the dresser/changing table & it's right there.   The zipper on the bottom allows for easy emptying into the washing machine, either front load or top load. The only problem is, especially if you use prefolds & don't quite wring them out well, you can get some leaking on the bottom zipper. But really that hasn't been a problem when I remember to wring out the prefolds well, and it's never a problem with the microfiber diapers.

Not good for hooks or doorknobs

Posted

Pros: Waterproof

Cons: Snaps aren't strong, hard to empty

I purchased the Knickernappies Doorknob Diaper Pail & a Fuzzibunz Doorknob Diaper Pail, and hands down, the Fuzzibunz liner performs the best.   The Kickernappies "pail" does NOT work on doorknobs. More than a few diapers, and the snaps will come undone. I have tried using it on an actual doorknob, and also on a hook on the side of DS's dresser... In both cases, the Kickernappies liner inevitably ends up on the floor.   Also, it's terribly inconvenient to empty. As I imagine most parents do, I try to empty the dirty diapers into the machine without actually having to touch them again. Well, Knickernappies doesn't make this easy. The opening is too small,...

Hands down, the best parenting book around

Posted

Pros: Revolutionary, easy to understand

Cons: Not full of practical tips, long in beginning

This has been the most important parenting book I have read so far. It has totally helped me to refocus my approach to parenting my now-toddler. Kohn has a great sense of humor and a wonderful style that will challenge the way you parent without making you feel bad about your earlier practices.   The first half of the book was a little long-winded for my taste, but is full of interesting and necessary background. The latter part of the book sets up a loose framework for how to be an unconditional parent, but doesn't give you a checklist of things you must or must not do. He really engages you as a parent to take full responsibility for creating a healthy & loving...

Beautiful & empowering

Posted

Pros: Empowering

Cons: Not practical advice

I read this book early in my pregnancy... Probably too early. I picked it up again after I had a better grasp of what my pregnancy & the process of labor & birthing would really entailed. On a second reading, I just loved it. It really is so true & so simple in its power. A must read for all mothers-to-be.
