I found this book to be a compelling and thoughtful look at the potential links between environmental toxicity and the alarming rise in the rates of autism. Without hysteria or straying into speculation, Belli provides a wide range of evidence for "our chemical world" as she puts it as a root cause (if not the only cause) of autism. The most convincing examples explore "autism clusters" where children (or their pregnant mothers) were exposed to exceedingly high levels of pollutants. I recently read "Raising Elijah" by Sandra Steingraber, and found them to be a well-matched pair. Both argue for the application of the precautionary principle, which is the concept that we should...(read more)

Pros: Beautifully written and illustrated!
We bought this as a Christmas gift for our younger son when he was just a month old, and over the last two years have read it to both our boys many times. It's always a testament to a book when I'm happy to read it again after so many repetitions, and this one has passed that test. The illustrations are gorgeous, dreamy, and filled with interesting details that make them fun to pore over. Best of all, though, is the writing. So much children's book writing is awkward, bland or contrived feeling, but this is none of those. The lyrical, poetic text is well-suited to being read aloud, and would stand alone as a poem without the support of the illustrations: "We tiptoed through grass...(read more)
Pros: Upbeat, cheerful story with great illustrations
Do Super Heroes Have Teddy Bears? is a fun read that my boys, ages 2 and 5, really enjoyed. With three years between them, I’m finding it a balancing act to choose books that both my kids will like, and was pleased to find that this story appealed to both of them. The comic-style illustrations are lively and filled with entertaining details, and the storyline celebrates creativity and ingenuity. We especially enjoyed studying the illustrations together; my 5 year old is plotting to build his own spaceship modeled after the cardboard-box version shown in the story, while my 2 year old loved searching for the family pets who appear in each spread. This is a good choice...(read more)
Pros: Lovely illustrations, beautiful message
I came across this book at the library and fell in love. It is beautifully written, lovingly and skillfully illustrated, and presents a view of the world that shines with hope. Highly recommended!
Pros: Fun, colorful illustrations, engaging story
Lola's Fandango is the story of a young girl who learns to dance flamenco as a surprise for her mother. The narrative is engaging and well-paced, and the illustrations are rich and lively. My two sons, 5 and almost 2, were both enthralled with the story and pictures. The included CD is a nice bonus and is a well-produced reading of the book. The publisher, Barefoot Books, never disappoints for its high-quality offerings and Lola's Fandango is no exception. This one is well-worth owning, and would make a great gift.
