View Full Version : MORE nesting/cleaning with HBs?
Munki'sMom 11-30-2008, 03:57 PM I always go nuts getting my house cleaned/organized prior to having a baby. This time (my 1st HB) its seems like I'm nuts about it! LOL!!!! Maybe its the fact I'm doing it all at home, people will be here, I would hate someone not being able to find things etc....
Anyone else like me? :o lol
Today, I washed ALL my rugs, organized/tossed out items from my girl's kitchen cabinet, and did bathroom cabinets. lol I've been doing this for months now. teehee
Belle 11-30-2008, 05:33 PM Yep. I didn't nest at all for my first (hospital) birth. For my homebirth I was moving the couch to vacuum under it. My dh said "Honey, I can help you with that"
dogmom327 11-30-2008, 05:38 PM I've only had a HB so no comparison but I cleaned like a crazy person those last few weeks. I was meticulously cleaning the groves in the wall texture in the bathroom :lol
I really wanted the house to be clean when I went into labor. I knew it would stress me out at least a little if it were dirty. Once labor started, I had DH vacuum and the house looked great.
Abismommy 11-30-2008, 06:10 PM I wish I would start nesting somewhat, I am 29 weeks and feel sooo unprepared for everything :( I just want everything to be perfect and go perfectly!
Pogo0685 11-30-2008, 06:56 PM This is my first birth, but I have been cleaning for at least 2 months now, before I never really cared, but we bought a house and I just cant stop cleaning so that when the baby gets here I will be able to hopefully rest up and enjoy the baby and not worry about cleaning. But like I said this is my first baby so I can't compare.
taramommy 11-30-2008, 08:08 PM I'm due 12/11 with my third, first home birth, and yep, I'm definitely more concerned about the house this time. I also have my baking instinct, which has seemed to crop up at the end of all my pregnancies, but this time cleaning is definitely part of it. Too bad my SI joint is really bothering me the last few days, because that is definitely slowing me down and I want to get stuff DONE!
jrabbit 11-30-2008, 08:40 PM I've been nesting since I was 16 weeks :o
Well, maybe not "true" nesting - but I think it's natural to nest more when you're birthing at home. We have a lot more things to think about!
--janis (37 weeks now - yikes ! )
jrabbit 11-30-2008, 08:41 PM ack - duplicate :p
Hallielynn01 12-01-2008, 07:16 AM I had a BC birth and don't remember nesting much if at all. this time i've been doing it for months! :) Organizing things that were fine, but suddenly driving me insane, obsessing over dog hair that has always been a non issue, and insanely visualizing how everything might go (always keeping it positive, as the mid thinks, often the body goes.......) I'm kinda liking it though, since I'm not super domestic. I've also been cooking dinner more often (DH likes to cook so he's always done most of it) almost like, knowing that I'll be a mom of 2 makes me feel more "motherly" I don't know...... :)
Lisanne 12-02-2008, 05:51 AM I've started nesting already and I still have 10 weeks to go :)

Oh my gosh! I thought I was the only one.....I am 36w with my second baby, first homebirth, but it was the same with both....I want to bake!!! I know I need to cook and freeze a few meals, but I would much rather bake. My husbands coworkers enjoy getting all the extras, but I feel like I have other more important things I should be doing and can't :D
CanidFL 12-02-2008, 08:16 AM I don’t have anything to compare to but I was nesting like crazy for my homebirth then……….we had a flood at 35 weeks pregnant. Everything was thrown up into the nursery that wasn’t wet and the carpet, cabinets, etc were ripped out. I was going mental. I could not imagine giving birth in such a dirty space. Well, the new floor, cabinets and baseboard all were complete on Sunday and I had DS on Tuesday. Nothing was neat and tidy. There was junk everywhere. We couldn’t even find the camera. But looking back now, it wasn’t the end of the world. He slept in our room anyway. It took a few months to clean up after that.
shanahan 12-02-2008, 06:41 PM I was going to post something similar a few weeks back!! I have been spastic about cleaning my house since probably about 12 weeks!! I constatnly "fantasize" about getting in a cleaning crew when I'm about 35 weeks! and I've told DH that I'm getting one - and the carpets cleaned!!!
When I should be napping w/my toddler, I am scrubbing the tub/shower, cleaning out the fridge, washing the baseboards, dusting the walls, etc. It is insane.
I worry what I will be like closer to the end! Thank goodness our house is only 1000 sq feet!!
shanahan 12-02-2008, 06:44 PM Oh my gosh! I thought I was the only one.....I want to bake!!!
Me TOO!! I realized recently that I was like that with my first, as well... I chalked it up then to just "giving in" to temptation (brownies, cookies, etc.) - but this time I realize that I don't even care to eat the stuff (well, I still enjoy it, I'm not going to lie!!) - but I mainly just want to do the act of baking! And SMELL the act of baking! Something so homey and motherly about it, I guess....
Lemon Juice 12-02-2008, 07:29 PM I'm due in 2 weeks, officially 38 weeks today :joy:
I have been nesting hard and have gone through lots of clothes and donated them/swapped them and organized tons of stuff.
This is our 5th child and 1st HB! I am really excited and freaked out right before week 37 when trying to get all my supplies ready to birth at home. Pool arrives tomorrow and then I can totally relax! Once I picked up all the items on my mw's list I felt much better too.
I do have a few more things to do and will feel even better after doing those things this weekend. Dp is out of town tomorrow for the whole day in NYC and hopefully that is his last trip until after babe is born.
Mainstream Hippie 12-02-2008, 08:50 PM My "nesting" with my first meant I organized my computer files. I am not kidding. :lol She was a planned hospital birth.
With my second, a planned home birth, I did spend the entire pregnancy cleaning. My house looked awesome for the birth and for a few months after.
Nesting hasn't kicked in yet this time (a planned home birth). It needs to hurry up. :lol
ellemnop 12-03-2008, 08:07 AM My first birth was a homebirth so I don't have the hospital birth experience to compare, but I wish that I would have nested more than I did in general... maybe next time, lol. Last time we moved 4 weeks after she was born, so I think that had a lot to do with the lack of nesting.
Take care,
El
Gena 22 12-03-2008, 01:16 PM Best wishes, you almost expecting mommas!
My first and only birth was at home, so I can't compare. I did nest, but not in sensible ways. It was vital to me that I organize our CDs (music, not dipes!) and I really wanted to make a birthing mix tape. I didn't go that far, but I did set certain albums aside. In the end, we tried a bunch, but Van Morrison was what stuck. Who would have guessed? Now I consider him my babies' special guardian angel. And they both have brown eyes.
What I should have done but forgot, was to make food for the midwives! My MW got very pissy about the pizza we ended up ordering.
JosieAK 12-03-2008, 02:49 PM I don't know about more, but I'm driving myself crazy since I WANT to be cleaning, cooking, organizing, throwing stuff out, fixing things, etc., but I get home from work and barely have enough energy to make dinner. I pulled all of my clothes out to go through them in early October and the boxes did not get packed away again until late November! So I'm scared of starting big projects. I can't wait for Christmas break so I can clean!
Kim919 12-04-2008, 01:17 PM When I went into labor I cleaned the house untill I couldn't physically do it any more. (about 5 hours before DD was born)
shanahan 12-04-2008, 05:09 PM My MW got very pissy about the pizza we ended up ordering.
are you kidding?!! you just went through 10 months of pregnancy, than labor, and then birth... And she was pissy about PIZZA?!! She should be lucky she got fed!
jrabbit 12-04-2008, 05:22 PM I didn't feed my mw! Never even occurred to me, actually! :o
This time, I'm a little more on top of things, so maybe I will :) Thankfully, my mw is veg, just like us, and we have similar food tastes. I would never order a pizza for her, for instance!

Om Girl 12-04-2008, 05:34 PM The day DD #2 was born I was nesting intensely. I was downstairs in my unfinished basement vacuuming concrete and cobwebs, organizing my laundry room (because the MW might need to do laundry and it was the one room I hadn't gotten to). Then I cleaned my entire kitchen (minus the fridge) so I could host Thanksgiving dinner (I hosted, NOT cooked!). As the last guests (my parents) were pulling away from the curb my water broke. Then I decided I must clean the bathroom and it's a darn good thing I did. Not less than 6 hours later our DD was born in the tub!
With our first DD (hospital birth) I didn't nest at all. In fact two weeks after her birth we moved.
Limabean1975 12-04-2008, 05:42 PM At nearly 16 weeks, I'm nesting inside my head...just having trouble finding the time or energy to act on it! In my first pregnancy, I can't remember when it started, but at 7 months I was moving around large heavy furniture, rearranging rooms, by myself when DH was out of town. Looking back I can hardly believe the stuff I moved - superhuman strength or something.

I can't believe I haven't triggered labor, yet, actually. I've been painting (zero VOC paint) and redecorating this entire pregnancy - of course, I slowed down after 30 weeks, but I was still on a ladder, painting the kitchen ceiling at 35 weeks. I promised myself no more ladders after 36 weeks, but I keep looking at the ceiling in my hallway and my bathroom ..............
Tomorrow, I'm meeting with a tile-store to discuss retiling my kitchen & bathroom. I'm 38 weeks now. :o I haven't decided if we'll go through with it now, or wait til after the baby. I have this fear that they'll get started, then I won't have anyplace to have the baby! Of course, my second fear is that it will be messy, and I won't want them doing it when I have a newborn. Decisions, decisions! DD2 was born at 42w5d, so I will kick myself if I wait too much longer to do the floors, and then the baby isn't actually born for 2 more weeks!
I haven't had any BH at all, and I have no reason to think labor is coming soon.

I came to that conclusion when I was 39 weeks pregnant and scrubbing my floors on my hands and knees with a sponge and a toothbrush. Then baby#3 arrived and my house has never been the same. I never had a cleaning urge with my other two kids born in the hospital.
mochimama 12-04-2008, 08:31 PM I had one hospital birth and one homebirth and didn't nest with either. My house was a disaster for both. I guess I'm just not a nester :shrug

I would have fed my birth team, but honestly, they were only at my house for a few hours. :lol My midwife even talked about how awesome I was, that she didn't have to cancel any appointments for that day. :lol

Oh, thank you! I knew I should have planned to have more food on hand, but just couldn't get my mind around it, what with working full time, first birth, twins, etc. Was hoping she'd be more flexible!
