Gosh, Mary, everyone should be so lucky to have a child is so academically focused! I say don't worry too much. Try to keep your son doing "kid things" on the one hand and then let him dabble in the more mature (for lack of a better word) academics if he wants to try it. I'm saying to go ahead if you and your husband agree and can afford it, of course. Since he appears to be interested in academics, maybe you could interest him in trying to make some money tutoring or something. Does he have any kind of job to occupy him? Does he have any specific interests? It sounds like you have a bright boy who just is ready to branch out. All you have to do is channel those energies....

My sons are 12 and 13 i just got through teaching 6 th grade to them and i used the learn at home series it lays it all out for you now they are going to be in 7th grade i started giving them chores to do and they have to divide them every 2 weeks then we pay them allowance only if all chores are done but if they dont do them no pay start off small see if he can handle responsibilities all the time and our neighbours get them to cut the grass and pays them if they do a good job start off small and then work up.. Alot of communities needmight have something he could volunteer in some classes or things he could do to get a feel for having jobs and feeling better but school should be first dont rule out learning all together :)
