Hello! I can't believe this, but last night at work, we were talking about my DD who is just going to be 1 tomorrow. I was saying how she is constantly crawling around looking for fuzzies to put her in her mouth. My coworker said "you should slap her face" ....well, i sort of blew her off because i thought maybe she was kidding. My other coworker said "doesn't she swallow them?" and i said, " no, she just kind of pockets them like a hamster" and then the first one said "you should slap her face" ....so i'm thinking..."maybe she doesn't realize that we're talking about a baby" .....so I say "do you realize we're talking about a 12 month old?" and she says "Yes, when do you think discipline begins?" i say "i will not be hitting my children" ..and she says "well you should at least pop her on the mouth when she puts something in her mouth" .....i said "i will never be hitting my children in any way" she says....."you can" and i say "i suppose, in theory, that i can, but i'm not going to do that" she says "well you are going to have to figure something out"
I just ended the conversation there.
I mean how bizarre?? I know some people believe in spanking, I don't.....and I won't be hitting any child of mine, but at least some people who spank do it for like an actual bad behavior or whatever, but she was wanting me to smack DD for something that is normal infant behavior and part of development. Ya know?
I was completely dumbfounded. Not looking for any particular response, just kind of venting. It was sad, because she has 2 children, so I assume that she treats her kids this way :(

It is amazing how sharing a simple story leads to such extreme, unwanted advice...

Why on earth would you want to slap a 12 month old for acting in a totally natural, normal 12 month old manner?

Why would you want to slap a 12 month old, period?

People are crazy.

ITA!!
What an awful story. I loved your line, "I suppose in theory I could" b/c I could just picture your "what the hell are talking about" face

ugh...for me that epitomizes my belief that many, if not most, people do not understand infants and children. They always expect far too much of them...yuck...but hopefully your comments made her think. One of my neighbors periodically comes back to me after similar (she's not so extreme though) and tells me she's been thinking about some thing that I said and she's changing her behavior...usually it's politics though.

They were just total b!tches. Ignore them.

That said, I do agree that it is probably not a good idea to let your Dd put fuzzies in her mouth. Choking aside, you dont' know what is on them...
