View Full Version : Anyone up for a GD book club?

I followed the advice of you wise GD gurus and borrowed "Kids Parents and Power Struggles" from the library - and I've got "Kids are Worth It" on the way from Amazon.

As I was reading the first book tonight, I started wishing I had someone to discuss the book with, talk about how the techniques and examples in the book seemed to apply to my family, and report about how things work out when I try out the suggestions. I'm just the type of person who gets so much more out of something when I can hash it out with others.

So....I was thinking - would any of you be up for a GD Book Discussion Club. I was thinking we could just come up with a list of books - and set up a poll to vote on our selections (Can I just say that I think "Kids, Parents and Power Struggles would be a marvelous first choice - hee hee hee :)) Then give everyone a bit of time to get the book, and start discussing, report on our successes/failures with any techniques or methods, and give each other some encouragement along the way.

So - who's in? :)

Jeanette

Good idea, I'd definitely be in on that. The wise GD mamas here often refer to certain books when they give their responses to specific situations, that it has gotten me interested in delving in and reading for myself.

and hey, we have the GD book thread going as a source for ideas.

Oh....another first book suggestion..."How to Talk so kids will listen and listen so kids will talk"

Guess what I got for Christmas? Hee Hee

I love to read and would be interested in doing this, but it will be contigent on me actually being able to get a copy of the book in my hands. I owe a shameful amount to the library right now. But, hey, if we keep this going, eventually I should be able to join in! :D

I love "How to Talk..." and I also have the other book "Liberated Parents, Liberated Children" and they both are very good books.

If you click "My Mission" in my signature, it takes you to a thread about "Siblings Without Rivalry". We're starting a discussion on that book next week.

Count me in as well. I'm currently reading "Becoming the Parent you want to be" (I think thats the title) and really enjoying it. I'd love to be able to discuss it and others with someone. I love to read too.

Thanks - great idea.

i know dh wont get around to readin the books i am making lists of so it would be great to have others to discuss stuff with. my dd is near 1 and i want to get it right as she is a "spirited" child. i want her to be able to grow and be happy but i still believe in parenting with limits.

count me in! I'm getting ready to start three books.

Siblings without Rivalry - which chellemarie already mentioned we are starting next week.

And - Giving the love that heals
How to talk so you kids will listen and listen so your kids will talk -

The How to talk... book sounds like a lot of people would like to start.

Keep me posted (literally HA).

Great! It sounds like alot of ppl are on-board for this GD book club idea (great idea, JeanetteL & Chellemarie). I think the best place to start is for everyone to head over to Chellemarie's Siblings Without Rivalry thread. That could be the first book for the club and then anyone who is interested in continuing on with a second book could stay for whichever one is decided on for next like How to Talk... or Kids, Parents, and Power Struggles.

I would love to participate though I wouldn't be as active as I'd like. I've already read Siblings Without Rivalry and loved it!!! (and returned it to the library :( ) but I would love a great discussion on it to solidify the points made in the book.

Sounds like a fab idea!!

So.... what's the first book and when are we starting?

Hey everyone,
I'm so pleased to see so much interest in this book club idea!

I didn't realize when I posted it that there was already one going on for Siblings Without Rivalry - but would anyone be interested in started another one here in this forum at the same time. I've only got one child, and none expected (knock wood :)) in the near future - so that book is a ways off for me.

If most people want to read Siblings, then I'll just wait patiently to start another one here when that one is done:)

I too, have only one dd now and am less inclined to read something related to siblings (though I'm keeping it in mind for the future). Any of the aforementioned books -or others- would be great.

I am also interested in a book club, but only have one young child at home right now, so the Siblings one is not a good fit for me, either.

I am headed to Borders right now to look at what they have..... let me know what you all want to read, I'm interested.

I wonder if we could get a subforum going or something? I don't know what the criteria is, but it would be nice to keep book discussions seperate from everyday issues - and make it more 'club'-y. Also, we could discuss more than one book at a time if we want. It seems an awful lot of us read!

Scoutycat,
That is a great idea. Any moderators reading?

This sounds exciting. I have received such useful information just reading this board. I would love to be a part of this group. I vote for starting a new book as it will take a while for me to get out and get the book and I don't want to feel like I'm behind.

What about a subforum and have a thread titled with the book title so people can read several at once if they want. If we have several going it allows the people to continue to post when they are able to read the book. (for instance...the sibling books don't apply right now for me, but later, when I am interested in it, I can go to that thread and read other's thoughts.

I was wondering...should this be on the books and music forum?

Jennifer,
I think that this subforum idea is wonderful - and I like your suggestions. I wonder if the moderator would go for it?

I do think it should stay here though, as I only go to that forum occasionally, and I think that people looking for GD discussions would be much more likely to find the threads if they were here. What does everyone else think?

I like the idea of the sub-forum staying here, and being only gd books. But that's probably something the moderators would decide, I guess.

I for one would love to discuss Kids Are Worth It. JeanetteL would you be interested in that when your book comes in from Amazon? Anyone else? Or are people focusing on the Siblings Without Rivalry and Nonviolent Communication books?

Hey everyone,
I am so happy to see so much interest in this idea, I'm quite excited about it.

Here is a list of the books that have been suggested in this thread thus far. Please post any other books you'd like us to consider and I'll put up a new thread with a poll so we can vote. I have not had time to get the authors and other information - so if anyone has this for any of the books - I'd really appreciate it if you would post.

Suggested Books:

Kids Parents and Power Struggles
Kids Are Worth It
How to Talk so kids will listen and listen so kids will talk
Liberated Parents, Liberated Children
Becoming the Parent you want to be
Raising Your Spirited Child
Giving the love that heals

I like the vote idea, too! I'd suggest adding Dr. Sears' Dscipline book, Try and Make Me! (levy & Ohanlon), Loving without Spoiling (Samalin) because I have them & they're on my reading list, and Positive Discipline for Preschoolers (Nelsen, Erwin & Duffy) because I'm reading it :D

:wave I'd like to join too!!

I'm all for Kids Are Worth It...I've read it, but need to re-read it again. Same with How to Talk.....
I've started reading Becoming the Parent you want to be, but I"m only in the first chapter....so no biggy if we read a different one first.

I have Kids, Parents and Power Struggles somewhere...but I think it is packed in storage right now :(
Any book is really ok with me....I love to read and need to get reading a book again....and really needing the "discussion" aspect of the book too!

Hope we can start something soon....on my way to the Siblings discussion thread....even though they are 6 m and 2.5 yrs....Dd bit Ds last night on the eye!! :eek
