View Full Version : Prenatal Supplements
guestmama9916 04-02-2009, 09:10 AM What's everyone taking? I don't take a multi but rather focus on the vitamins and minerals I feel are extra important during pregnancy and that I can't get enough of through my diet.
Blue Ice Gold CLO - 3 (might start taking 4) capsules a day for 15,000 IUs of A, 1500 IUs of D (those are natural vits, not synthetic which could be toxic to the body at those levels)
Rainbow Light B vitamins
Cal/Mag (2000 mg of Calcium a day)
CoQ10 (400 mg a day)
? maybe something else as I see fit
Apricot 04-02-2009, 08:10 PM I'm pretty similar to you, I take
prenatal multivitamin with iron
omega3 suppliment
vitamin D (because I have a known deficiency, like almost everyone else in Washington!)
calcium suppliment - some tums, some of those chocolate supps
Oh and I get B complex injections on occasion. Perhaps there is a placebo effect.
I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with 15K vitamin A, even though it's natural and I've read that research. I guess I'm just a worrier.

I'm following these (http://www.westonaprice.org/basicnutrition/cod-liver-oil-menu.html)recommendations. I'm a traditional foods/WAPF follower. I actually feel really good since I upped my CLO dose and slept like a rock the past two nights. Since I'm both pregnant and nursing, I feel like I really need the extra CLO right now.
Apricot 04-02-2009, 09:41 PM Wow, that's a lot of vitamin A they recc for everyone. I've read it, but I just can't do a supp that has that much. I'll just have to eat liver. :)
Not suggesting you stop, not at all, just mentioning my anxiety issue.
WaitingForKiddos 04-03-2009, 01:18 AM I'm taking prenatals by the One A Day company.
MamaZoZo 04-03-2009, 05:37 AM I'm taking a prenatal multivit and 5mg of Folic acid on top of that. My doc gave me the prescription for the folic acid during my last pregnancy, said they had just changed the recommended dosage. I suck at remembering to take pills. I will go take them now :lol

Andee 04-03-2009, 10:20 AM What's recommended? I haven't bought any prenatals yet. I'm waiting until DP gets a check in the mail...
SunShineSally 04-03-2009, 10:21 AM citacel assure it is from my OB it has the prenatal and a DHA tablet also has the folic acid and I am going to pick up more sublinual vit.B I need extra vit B anyway but even more so now! I can feel the difference but I have to wait til sunday to get more:( Ohhh I also take Vit. D
Brisen 04-03-2009, 12:00 PM Right now I'm using up my salmon oil capsules & looking into a good fish oil option; a vit B complex with folic acid; vit E; and vitex. Oh, and tums. I've been drinking red raspberry leaf daily for a while, and I'm adding nettle now. I try to make sure I get a couple of cups of yoghurt and a spoonful of coconut oil each day, also.
SilvanaRose 04-03-2009, 12:14 PM I take a prenatal multi vitamin, folic acid and I drink a special tea I prepared based on my doulas recomendations. Also I am studying herbalism for my own pure enjoyment. I brew it for 4 hours to overnight to get the maximum out of it. It is full of b vitamins, calcium, vit A and D, iron, and minerals and is awesome for fatigue, nausea and blood cleansing. I also chew on dried kelp when I am craving too many sweets or salt. Oh and a Tbsp of my home-made herbal vinegar into 8 ounces of water. I think that about sums it up for me.
SilvanaRose 04-03-2009, 12:16 PM Oh and I slather myself in coconut and olive oil after showers lol

mmmm.... coconut oil! Do you cook with it as well? I saw this yummy looking coconut oil blended with ghee the other day that sounded delicious. It was made by blue breeze. I see you do the kelp thing as well. I have some kelp flakes that I mix in with my sea salt for the iodine. I think iodine is important in pregnancy - deficiency can cause mental retardation in the baby. Sometimes I take a tsp of flakes along with my daily supps.

I'd definitely get a good quality fish oil with natural fat soluable vits A and D in it like Blue Ice or Radiant Life. Vits A and D are crucial to preventing birth defects and promoting a healthy baby and mom. I think these 2 vits are the most important but there are certainly other things that are needed as well that have already been listed out here.

What she said. The natural A vitamin as opposed to artificial is important because very large amounts of artificial A have been linked to birth defects. Also at this stage especially (first 6 weeks) folic acid! To help prevent neural tube defects.
I am not taking anything at the moment except for a B complex w/folic acid if I calculate that I haven't gotten around 3-400 micrograms of folate over the day. I get it mostly through green leafy vegetables, eggs, whole grain rye, oranges, nettle infusions, and raw beets (grated up with raw apple :yum). I'm actually surprised how easy it is to get enough folate through diet if you put a little effort into it each day.
Also trying to avoid processed foods (in theory at least. Yesterday I just had to have a big mac :p), eat as much fresh and organic as possible given the season and our budget, etc. I plan to try to avoid supplements by making a point of getting the vitamins I need in food. If I notice I'm having a low intake of something then I'll take that vitamin or mineral in a supplemental form.
