Hi working mamas, I'll be joining your ranks shortly. I'm an RN, and I've decided to go back to work part time. I have always loved working PM shift (3-11pm) because I'm a night owl that hates to wake up early. Thank goodness we've been blessed with a child that also likes to sleep in! :D
I figure working pm shift with a child will be better than a day shift because I'll be away from him for less awake hours. My major concern is that he currently nurses to sleep. Not all the way to sleep, but it is a huge part of our nightly bedtime ritual. I'm so sad to miss this and sad that I have to put ds through it, even though I'll only be working a few nights per week.
I fed ds early last night and had dh put him down to sleep and it did NOT go well. I'm torn now, between allowing him to get used to being put to sleep by dh and wanting to take all the bedtime sweetness I can get before I have to go back. Frustrating.
Anyway, just want to chat with other pm shift moms and see how things are going with you. :hippie

I'll let you know, I'm going back in an hour! :(
I've been letting dh take over the last two wks though, and I feel good knowing he's got ds's cues and needs fully figured out!!!
Good luck, I'll let you know how it goes!!!
Peace,

I'm an RN who work nights (either 11-7 or 7-7). It works well for me - I'm a night owl and then I can be with my kids when they get home from school. I have a sitter that comes to the house while I sleep and watches the youngest two. I only work a few days a week though, so it's not an everyday kind of thing. It works for us.

mamasoleil, I'm thinking of you today! I hope all is going well.
Mom2six, I have another friend that does the same thing. Her babe (10 months) sleeps all night through for her DH! But wakes every 2 hours when she's home. Little stinker :). What unit do you work? I'm going to be starting in the NICU and REALLY looking forward to it. My previous experience has been in peds, so this will be a change for me. And more of a challenge too, which is nice. I'm going in to take my math test tomorrow - blech!

I work L&D. I keep wanting to quit though! I've considered special care nursery, which would still be good experience since I want to go back to school to be a CNM.

Chava, special care nursery would be excellent experience for a CNM. Do you plan to practice in a hospital? Birth center? Homebirths?
I want to go back to school for my NP cert. It sure is hard to find the right time to do it though. Maybe one day I'll get around to it :).

Well, I worked all week. day shifts. I'm going Sunday night for my first night shift. This week was just to reintegrate myself...
My usual schedule is 2 12 hr day shift (ex:Mon/Tues) then 2 12 hr nights (Wed/Thurs), then I'm off for four days. I really do like this schedule.
Thanks for thinking of me Jackson's Mama!!! :D
Ds was perfect for dh...makes me feel so good!!! :love

well i'm an RN too but i think i work the weirdest shifts of all! i work in the ED either 5p-1a or 4p-4a. it works out pretty well for us except i'm tired on the morning after a 12 hr shift. (i don't have a sitter) thank goodness my son will usually play in his crib for a bit in the mornings! i am just worried about how this next baby will be! oh well, it sure beats having to put my kids in daycare!

I'm thinking about goingback in a month or so. I used to manage a restaurant and if I go back It'll be to waitress or bartend. I am concerened about how your dh's all handle nights. Right now the biggest problem is my dd is boycotting the bottle. ugh. Oh well, I guess she is big enough tohave decided what's best! he he hee
