I hope this is the right place to post this, but if this thread belongs elsewhere please move it, Piglet68 (thanks!)

My 4 year old ds had an infection in both ears over Thanksgiving, and did a course of amoxicillin. He'd only had one ear infection before (around 18 months old). In December at the 4 year old routine checkup, they tested his hearing and noted that the exam showed a very mild hearing loss, but the doctor said he still had fluid in his ears that she thought probably caused this. He was scheduled to be retested in early February. We hadn't noticed any hearing problem and weren't that concerned since the explanation seemed logical.

Over the past few days both my husband and I have noticed subtle signs that ds may not be hearing as well as we think he should, especially when we speak in lower tones (but quite audible ones). Sometimes he seems unattentive, something we'd probably have tended to attribute to ignoring us when he doesn't want to be interrupted or bothered with parental interference. It's nothing really blatant and most of the time his hearing seems fine. But today we kept testing out whether he seemed to be hearing us especially when we'd talk to him when he wasn't looking right at us, and he didn't react sometimes until we raised the pitch and level of our voices.

We're uneasy enough that I called the pediatrician's office to say I didn't want to wait until February for another exam, and they are seeing him tomorrow. I guess I am kind of expecting to have any possible finding that isn't 100% okay still pinned on the recent ear infections (this might not be fair, his MD isn't the patronizing type but I can't help being concerned anyway). I wasn't really worried about the antibiotic treatments he's had because it's only happened twice in his life, but now I'm kicking myself for not being more cautious about them, or being too accepting of the ear infection diagnosis.

I suppose what I'm hoping for from more knowledgable MDC mamas are suggestions as to what to ask the doctor if there's still a problem (obviously I suspect there is since I'm writing this!), whether I should wait to see if things improve if that's what's suggested, if I should insist on an audiology consult now, and if there are alternative routes I can go to deal with this. I'm somewhat mainstream in terms of medical stuff but the more time I spend here the less comfortable I am just accepting the "party line."

Thanks so much for any advice - hope I can report back that I was just borrowing trouble!

My middle child has hearing loss call your local pediatric audiologist (usually works in an pediatric ENT). The hearing test they do in regular pediatric offices can be very inaccurate!!!!!!! Matter of fact having a person test your child’s ears that are not familiar with children can cause inaccurate test.

My dd’s hearing loss is more caused by her birth defect and the complications it lead to. It really is not a big thing!! It can be a scary process to go through, but early intervention and awareness can make a world of difference.

You can teach people to look at your child’s face and learn the difference between I am ignoring you and I can not hear you. You lessen frustrations that can greatly carve into a child’s emotional well being.

Thank you so much! I will definitely follow this visit up with an audiologist visit. Your post reminded me of what happened when ds was tested in December. He was balking at putting on the headphones so I did it first. The tech kept asking me if I heard anything and I couldn't hear at all - started getting a bit worried that *I* had a hearing problem. Well, you know what's coming...she didn't have the machine turned on right!

I really appreciate your help - it's nice to have someone remind me this can be dealt with.

DS would like to say something too.

:angry :wave :splat  :hippie :thumb :D

LOL!! My children love those faces also.

Make sure you deal with an audiologist that is familier with kids. My dd had hearing aid issues and we went to a different place. The lady who test her looked purplexed. Her hearing tested normal. The problem was the helper was doing things that got responces not the hearing test. UGH!!!!!! That was a night mare but at least they finally got her aid fixed.

Tracy, thank you for the link! I need so much education/information about natural remedies and this gives me a starting point. Are there keywords I should use to search the archives that might lead me to "beginners" threads about this? I don't mean just for ear infections but in general. Reading the lists of what people use is kind of overwhelming as I have no frame of reference to work from.

Marsupial Mom you are so helpful. I am glad your daughter is doing well despite the best (not) efforts of some in the field. I am looking for a pediatric audiologist in our area in case we need one.

The MD we saw yesterday said ds still has an ear infection in the right ear, worse than last month. Perhaps that's the cause of the hearing changes. He did pass the test this time (and I thought the tech was much better). However I will not rely on this alone.

Again, thank you both for your help and support!

larklinett:
I am not the best with natural and homeopathy, I just poke around...but I wanted to give you that link because I thought you might want to PM some of the gals on the thread. Some can lead you in the right direction.

also, poke around down in health and healing.. in search do something like eardrums or words like that... the word has to have six letters...
part of the search engine issues...

anyway that will help open even more threads for you...

I would look into this sites info on homopathic treatments for ear infections.

I would honestly try that route first.

Please don't go to an audiologist. Please go see a real doctor who can properly diagonsis(sp?) your child's hearing loss, you need to go to a Ear Nose and Throat doctor. I am hard-of-hearing (since birth, father is also deaf, daughter is hard-of-hearing, latest little one is too) and have learned over the years (my mom has always taken me to a ENT doctor) that audiologist don't really know how to do things to help with hearing losses, they know how to sell you hearing aids you may or may not need.

Just sit down with a paper and pen and list everything you see about your little one and how he reacts to things you do. If you have any concerns or questions put those down too. Take them to the doctor and give them to him/her. Don't leave the doctor's office and until "all" your questions/concerns have been answered and you "thoroughly" understand everything he/she has said about the hearing test, hearing results, and if he has a hearing loss. How to deal with it, how to help your child deal with it, how to make sure you get everything he needs at home, school, friends, family, and in public in general. How he can use the ADA to his advantage. Find out where there is a Self Help For Hard-of-Hearing group in your area (it's a support group), where there is a Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Services located in your area to get a lot of information and see if your son qualifies for loan equipment to help him out (phone to use, lights to get his attention, etc.). I hope this helps you out some. Good luck in this situation.

You have all been so terrific - how I appreciate it! I am trying to learn about the homeopathic treatments available, especially if ds continues to get ear infections - guess my sense of security because of him only having one up till now was false. homebirthx2 I totally agree with you about making sure he has an ENT consult if this persists. I wasn't impressed by the audiology equipment in the doctor's office. While I'm less worried than I was a few days ago because his hearing seems okay now, I'm not going to dismiss this as just an ear infection, and will closely monitor how he's doing, while I'm learning more about all that you have three have helped me to consider. Many many thanks. Hope I can help all of you one day.
