Too manny posts about bad gifts.
As suggested in the article "No More Junk Toys" in the last edition of Mothering I wrote a letter to anyone I thought would be giving gifts to my dd (20mo). I did end up with some nice wooden toys (easl & doolhouse) but the best toy by far was a metal petal car, like the kids played with in the 50s (I think) It will require a lot of asembly but I think when it is finished it will be more fun and last longer than all other gifts combined. Im so excited!
Please tell me about any GOOD gifts your DC received.

Well, ds loved some of the plastic and electronic stuff he got, like his leappad computer and toddler cd player, so I'm sure he would consider those 'good' gifts.
But he also got a great wooden croquet set that can be set up indoors or out, and a wooden car ramp set from my mom.

DS is not quite a year old and my mom got him a wooden ball that has 8 little things/faces/something that pop out of it as it rolls. Its the first ball that he has thrown and played with in a serious way. My dh and I love it too. Its very fun visually and fun in a tactile way as well.
My mom also got him a doll (I must confess, per my direction and suggestion). Its made of wool and very simple and soft...about 12 inches long. When he got it, he right away leaned over (the doll was lying on the floor) and put his face on the doll - like a hug without arms! I was surprised and rather moved. He had never done that before to anything. He did it at least 6 times that day. I can only assume he was reacting to it (what he percieved to be a small version of himself?) the way others react to him. I'm probably full of it - but it was really sweet. And I felt somewhat vindicated as my husband had been teasing me about the 'girly' gift. Ah well.

Some of the best gifts this Christmas: My sister got dd a cool hand drum--it's sort of like a tambourine without the rattly things. She also crotcheted a headband/neck warmer for her. My mom sewed her a little hat that looks like a Little Miss Muffet hat. My SIL gave her a cowboy hat. She got lots of books--mostly interactive ones per my suggestion. Dh and I got her maracas and a wooden table and chairs set (does it count if we bought them ourselves? :) ). Oh, and MIL got her a savings bond--money for her savings account is always good.
We also got a couple of stinkers that have been returned, but that's another thread!

My son's absolute favorite gift is a floor standing easel chalkboard. He has drawn on it every day since Christmas. Unless he is sleeping, not an hour goes by (literally) without him drawing on that thing.
My daughter liked everything she got but so far nothing seems to be a favorite. It changes day to day. She's fickle :D Today her favorite is the Strawberry Shortcake doll.
My best gift was the tool set my dh got me :D He has a workshop in the garage with too many tools, all jumbled up and if I just need a hammer it's a big production to find one in that mess (of course if he's home he can find anything but that doesn't help me when he's at work and I need a tool). So he got me my own tool kit with the basics. I keep it on the fridge and have already used it 3 or 4 times since Christmas :love
