Where do you like to buy your diaper patterns?

I don't even own a sewing machine but was going to ask for one for my birthday. I would love to learn to sew, especially diapers.

Is it that hard? I know...not the easiest of questions!

I guess that would depend on what you are looking for in your diapers. Are you wanting a simple pattern to adjust to your tastes? If so I would say try the free patterns. My favorite is this:

http://www.geocities.com/mytafadhali/DiaperSewingTutorials.htm
and http://geocities.com/myfreediaperpattern/
Or do you want the "fashionable" styles I call them. Here's Cuddlebuns: http://www.cuddlebuns.com/pattern.htm and I don't remember where Honeyboys and the other "fashionable" diaper websites are located. Hope this helps! Kathryn5kids

i found a super easy Kwik Sew pattern that you can probably get at any fabric store..it's pattern #2062...it has ex- small, small, med, lg, and ex-lg all in the same envelope. it is simle, does the job and affordable, mine was $7.95 i think. i can't post pictures, but i'd be more than happy to email youa picture of ds in one if you'd like...just let me know!

hope you get a sewing machine for your b-day!

Here you can find lots of different patterns.

http://www.sewshoppe.com/patterns.shtml

I bought the honeyboy pattern from there. I have never sewed a thing in my life (besides lines on fabric to try out the different stitches my machine) before my first honeyboy. Here is a pic of how it turned out.

I have heard if you have never sewn from a pattern before the honeyboy directions are easier then if you have. Not sure how true that is but it worked for me. They take a lot of time to make though. Or maybe that is just because I am so inexperienced.

If I could do things over, I would get a serger and the cuddlebuns pattern. I imagine they are faster to put together than the honeyboy. But I don't know what I would do with a serger other than diapers so the sewing machine is probably more versital.

i've seen some pretty cheap singer tiny sergers on ebay. if i can get one cheap enough i think the investment would be alright.

i do like the cuddlebuns. well, i like the look of them. i have one en route as we speak.

OMG, please don't waste your money:eek If you are going to get a sewing machine, please get a REAL one, those aren't even worth giving to a child to play with imo. With a poor quality machine you'll spend more time getting frustrated with the thing from tension to tangled bobbins to not being able to manage the fabric to to to...you name it.

3 things to look for imo:
1. top loading bobbin...never to rarely will you ever have bobbin issues with one
2. adjustable foot height esp. if you plan on working with thicker fabrics or layers.+
3. all metal interrior for a stronger machine that won't fall apart.

I personally love JANOME made produts, have a low end NewHome that will be my childrens when I have space to put it out more and teach them to sew(unless I can afford/condone a lower end top bobbin model)...and my :love my Craft Master 5000 (the new version of the NewHome 3000), it just purrrrrs when I sew on it.

Berdina, Elna, Viking, Janome(newhome craftmaster) are some of the top brands to look for.

**ditzy me didn't catch the serger part...but my opinion still stands, get a quality one or it's a waste of money and time.

I second, third, and forth that! Do not waste your money on a cheap machine, it's far better to buy a used quality machine than a new crappy machine even if the price is the same. I'm a bernina fan myself. I would suggest trying to buy locally, sewing machines are heavy to ship and your local machine repair guy may even offer you a warrenty on your used machine.

There's a Danish (?) pattern (in German) that is great but runs big. I don't remember where it is, can anybody help me?

Wow- what a bunch of great sites...I've bookmarked several. As a new CDing mommy, I'll have to check into these some more.

Thanks!

I've made that Octobre (sp) designed diaper, and for a front aplix, really like it...the fit is very nice, ds was able to wear the smaller size at about 20slim #'s and will be wearing it for a while unless he outgrows the rise. I'm not a big front aplix fan, so I don't have but a couple of these from my experimenting days. If you need to make it smaller, you can always take the pattern to the library and downsize it kwim on the copier. It's pretty self explanitory via the pictures, but on the sewyourowndiaper yahoo group there is a translation in the folders or somewhere like that.

Wow, I am also dying over your Fireflies! Green with envy!

BigBellyDreams, you bough the HoneyBoy having not been a big sewer... was it hard to follow the pattern? I bought a cheap machine hoping to learn to sew but so far patterns look like a bunch of gibberish to me and I really (REALLY) want to be good at it so I can justify buying a nice serger.

Do you mean the Ottobre? It's Finnish. That's definitely not German! LOL! :D It's in English now, too. I'm looking for the link on Google. I have the pattern. The rise is a little long, but everything else is good. Here it is: http://www.ottobredesign.com/en/print/pdf/vaippa_en.pdf

Yeah if you have the Ottobre pattern, you don't need the Honey boy pattern, I've read that they are almost identical to each other!

Has great instructions for sewing your own dipes and nice pics too.

You don't need fancy fabrics to start sewing your first tester dipes. You can use anything cotton or mostly cotton like old t-shirts, sheets, receiving blankets, etc.

http://www.angelfire.com/sk/clothdiaperlove/diapers.html
Kinda goofy pics on some, and annoying pop ups but you can see my lil ds in a aio dipe I made. Takes no time at all once you start cutting and if you use old tshirts for you first dipes you son't be so afraid to just jump right in a start sewing!

Lots of fun and addicting! But way less expensive than buying cute wahm dipes, and you can make your favorite style, use your own fabric etc. Not trying to put down wahms! THey ROCK! But for us regular folks with tight pocketbooks it is intimidating to look at their awesome dipes and just have plain white ones at home on our kids.

good luck, and once you start sewing if you have any ques, you know where to go!!
