View Full Version : Weekly Chat June 9th-15th
starshine1001 06-09-2009, 10:15 PM Late in the day on the 9th, but I got it in there on time!
Sooooo...I talked to a couple of midwives today. I'm setting up appointments to meet them and have a talk with them. I like both of them from what I know over the phone...it's going to come down to meeting them in person. They're both older ladies...not that I have a problem with that, but I loved having a midwife that was my age with my last baby. *sigh* I sooo wish I could have my old midwife back!! But I can't fly to FL from CA just to have my midwife!!
Fireflyforever 06-10-2009, 02:58 AM Well, not a whole amount to report here. My symptoms are pretty mild and come and go so I waver between optimism & pessimism. The tiredness seems pretty constant though. So far this pregnancy most resembles my pregnancy with my DS - maybe another boy!? I'm appalling at gender prediction - have got it wrong 2x out of three with my previous children, LOL.
I have a booking appointment with "my" midwife (I'm in England & maternity services on the NHS are pretty different here) next Wednesday when I'll be 7+2 by my dates. I'm hoping that, as a high risk mama, she'll be happy to book me an early reassurance scan.
Wishing you all a "feeling very pregnant" week :)
Willowrose 06-10-2009, 05:30 AM Still no major symptoms here. I have to wait till tomorrow to get my levels rechecked, so I'm just playing the waiting game.
I haven't met any midwives yet (though I have managed to schedule one appointment), haven't seen an OB, haven't had an ultrasound or HCG measurement, have no symptoms (except being hot)... so it's just like before I was pregnant! I sometimes even forget I'm pregnant!
It's hard to wait, but I'm trying to enjoy "normal" while it's still here.
Lauren31 06-10-2009, 07:24 AM What do you think I should expect to see at a 6 week 4 day appointment? The doctors won't go off my ovulation dates from my chart so they say I am almost going to be 9 weeks along and need to do a dating ultrasound because of the discrepancy. Friggin doctors. I hate having to choose these JUST because of insurance. I don't want to go to a 6 week 4 day ultrasound (vaginal) and them see nothing bc it is too early!
Grace24 06-10-2009, 09:09 AM Lauren you can do an u/s that early. A friend of mine had hers this morning, if I'm not mistaken you might even see a heartbeat. Someone correct me if I'm wrong... then let them discover their dating is off. (They'll never listen to you. :irked:)
MommaSomeday 06-10-2009, 09:43 AM Lauren - it is possible to see a heartbeat at 6 weeks, but it is also totally normal to not be able to see it until about 7 weeks. Hopefully, you will be able to see it and be reassured. *hugs* As for the dates, the early scans are pretty accurate for dates, so don't worry about it too much. You can stick your tongue out at your doctor at your next appointment when you're right and he/she is wrong.
I need to call my midwife today and tell her I'm pregnant again. I'll need to go get a confirmation of pregnancy letter for my insurance. I am debating whether I want to go have an early scan done or not. On one hand, it's reassuring to see something there, but on the other hand... well, I don't know. Maybe I should get one. :)
lilviolet 06-10-2009, 09:58 AM Lauren - It could go either way really... My sister was able to see a heart beat at 5 weeks and change. My best friend went in at 6 weeks and just saw a sac and then went back two weeks later and saw a heartbeat. She just birth to a healthy baby girl at the end of April. So if you don't anything, don't worry!!
Keeta 06-10-2009, 10:12 AM I am soooooo crabby today, ARGH!!!!! My poor poor DS, I don't know why but every little request he makes of me makes me crazy! I just feel so tired even though I got tons of sleep last night. Maybe I'll go make myself some decaf and hope for a placebo affect of caffeine...
We met with a midwife on Monday night. We really liked her! She's young, got two kids, only does homebirth and will only take 3 clients due in the same period, and teaches at the local midwifery school. We're meeting with two other midwife practices, one two weeks from tomorrow and the other the following Tuesday. They both have 3 midwives in the practice. After we've met with them all, we'll decide (DH and I are both terrible maximizers - can't make a decision until we've seen all the options!) But we both said that we'd be happy with the midwife we met this week, so that feels like a load off already. :D
5 weeks today! Yay! Love seeing the new "this week your baby..." stuff for the new week. :love
starshine1001 06-10-2009, 10:29 AM Just found out that one of the midwives I'm considering is going on vacation for a couple of weeks, so I'm going to have to wait till the end of the month to meet with her. I feel drawn to her for some reason, more so than the other midwife, so I'm willing to wait. I'll only be about 8.5 weeks by then, so I'm not in a big rush.
I didn't have any early scans with my second, just a 20 week one to make sure all was well and he was developing well and to find out the gender!! I'm glad I didn't have any late scans, as he was born at 10 lb., 1 oz., and I'm sure I'd have gotten pressure from the Dr.'s office where I had the scan to do something NOW due to his size. I'm so glad that I went with a midwife. She could tell by feeling my belly that he was big...she guestimated 10 lbs!!! She asked if I wanted a scan just to see how big, and I said no...I know I can birth big babies, so why worry myself about it? :p
JamesMama 06-10-2009, 10:35 AM Lauren, hopefully you'll be able to see something! My girlfriend had an early scan with her last 2 pregnancies, her DD1 because she conceived pre-PPAF and her DD2 (due anyday!! :joy:) because she conceived on a wonky cycle and was unsure of dating. I think she was 6 weeks and change with both of them and saw the HB both times.
I called my m/w after my bfp. I see her for the whole first appt spiel on July 6th. I'm still debating whether I'll do a doppler then or not. I'll only be 10weeks...I wanna try but I don't wanna be a wreck if we can't hear it. I'm not really fluffy but I'm not exactly skinny either ;) I'm more Marilyn Monroe sized :lol
wendimarie 06-10-2009, 02:12 PM I talked with midwives that I used with my DD's HBAC and they wanted me to come in a the end of the month. I would be 8.5 weeks . That just seems too early for me. I was thinking more 10-12 weeks. Not sure what I want to do. I won't be doing ultrasounds and they won't be able to hear the heartbeat yet so I don't see the point.
Lauren31 06-10-2009, 04:54 PM Thanks guys! I really really hope I see something next week at 6 w 4d bc otherwise I won't be back at a doctor until I am 16 weeks!
annettemarie 06-10-2009, 06:06 PM Talked to my midwife yesterday. She said to call her in July and we'll take a listen for the heartbeat. There are definite advantages to being a fifth-timer, LOL!
rajahkat 06-10-2009, 06:33 PM I haven't met with any midwives yet. It stills seems so early! I plan on meeting with everybody in town though, which is about 5 different midwives (give or take some apprentices & assistants.)
Other than that, not much new to report......water currently grosses me out. I did go to the farmers market today and got some of the most beautiful produce! So I've got a chicken & rice & veggies & cheese casserole in the oven. :)

That is what I was thinking. This is my 4th pregnancy so I am in no rush until I can actually hear the heartbeat. They know me, I know them so there isn't that formality. I won't be getting blood work done so that isn't needed. I told them I would get back to them because the date they wanted to meet doesn't work in our schedule plus I want DH to be there (it was a Tuesday) and last time all of our appointments were on Saturdays.
Ugh, I hate how I start obsessing about one little thing... it's heat right now. I felt overheated today and started worrying about the hot tub/sauna thing... though I haven't used those, I worried I got too hot just from being out in the heat, and realized I hadn't been drinking enough fluids! And I KNOW there's nothing I can do about it now anyway, yet I'm still worried. Need to breathe!
starshine1001 06-10-2009, 07:29 PM Dude...I was just happily munching away on some pistachios that I picked up at the market today, when I suddenly had the urge to vomit. Thankfully, no puke, but how can something be so appetizing one second and making me sick the next??
PhotoJournMama 06-10-2009, 07:55 PM I still don't know my dates :(
I went for an ultrasound on the 3rd, they had to do an internal (less awkward than I had imagined, other than poor DS crying because he couldn't see me when I was lying down there). Well, the little squidy was only 2.5 - 5 weeks, but the couldn't tell how old exactly and couldn't see a yolk sac or fetal pole. The midwives in my city won't accept patients until they know their due dates, so I am just hoping that they don't book up completely with the lucky ones with regular cycles. I will definitely cry on the phone if they tell me there isn't a spot - I had a horrible experience with an ob my last pregnancy and can't go through that again. I am tearing up just thinking about it (that must be the hormones talking).
I have been feeling pregnant though, and getting a little more nasuea every day haha! When I am not ravenous, I am trying not to puke. It's the strangest feeling! It sounds like you can relate, Jess.
MommaSomeday 06-10-2009, 08:09 PM I am having ridiculous shortness of breath. It happens to me quite a bit, actually, but I absolutely hate it. I think it's my mild form of an anxiety attack.
I emailed my midwife - I'll call her in a day or so if I don't hear back from her. Today, I have been thinking a lot about birthing options. I'm not quite sure what we will do.

That's a good shape to be. She was gorgeous :D

Hope you're okay Rachele. That doesn't sound nice at all.:Hug
Mommy2Austin 06-11-2009, 07:06 AM Well I know my midwife needs to see me at or before 10 weeks because if she doesn't see us before 12-15 weeks we're then considered high risk (if you haven't had OB care I assume) and they can no longer take us as clients because of liability insurance. So I plan to call and make an appt. for the first or second week of July. Would put me right in the zone :) I'm 6 weeks tomorrow.
Anyone else feel its almost harder knowing earlier than if we were to find out at 10 weeks to start?
Been thinking about names...gonna check for a baby name thread and make one if there isn't!
Keeta 06-11-2009, 08:33 AM Anyone else feel its almost harder knowing earlier than if we were to find out at 10 weeks to start?
:nod
MommaSomeday 06-11-2009, 08:52 AM Sarah - yes, definitely harder to know early. I wish I would have miraculously been 13 weeks when I first found out and already through the first trimester! I was about 7 or so weeks when I found out I was pregnant with Gideon. But, it was different then, I guess. :)
Jill - I'm okay. :) It just happens, and I remember it happening more with Gideon, too. I just have to be careful not to breathe too quickly and get too much oxygen when I feel like I'm not getting enough. Strange, but true. How are you feeling?
Today, my little cousin is spending the day at work here with me. Right now she's playing with Play-Doh (and the smell is KILLING me) and I have some coloring books and crayons for her, too. if she gets bored, I'll find some cool crafts on the net or something. :)
Mommy2Austin 06-12-2009, 07:28 AM So hows everyone doing? I can see a baby bump if I hold my loose skin up LOL. It's actually pretty pronounced too. I'm gonna call and make an appt. with my midwife for early July :) Hopefully by then the heartbeat(s?) will be apparent :)
HoldensMama 06-12-2009, 10:26 AM Anyone else feel its almost harder knowing earlier than if we were to find out at 10 weeks to start?
I actually love knowing early and having a huge fun secret to keep. Except that babycenter.ca won't let me sign up until I'm 4 weeks (as of today I'm 3w+4d). Boo on them. :)

I can't keep pregnancy a secret to save my life. I tried to hold it in for 5 minutes before I broke down and told DH LOL
HoldensMama 06-12-2009, 01:46 PM Of course I have told some people (dh, Mom) but I like that work people don't know, yet.
Oh and I officially have a midwife as of today! I'm so excited that I'm on the road to my first homebirth. I'm still in shock a little bit because they're so busy here that it makes it hard to get a spot even calling at the first pos test. :joy

That's awesome that you got a midwife, HoldensMama! Congrats!:D

ME TOO!!
:blah
Pinoikoi 06-12-2009, 08:42 PM I am meeting a midwife on Tuesday. She only does homebirths. I found out that here, if you wait too long, then you won't be able to get "in" with a midwife because they only take so many clients due in a particular month. Plus I wanted to have an established relationship with mine before I go back to school (late August, and it is only June, but they only see you once a month at this point, so...)
Dp is a little undecided about a homebirth (he thinks there will be a big mess and it will ruin the bed- but in his defense he NEARLY ruined his shoes at one of my births- good thing he is a quick response kind of guy :lol). I have a more wait and see approach.
Anyway, I have an acquaintance that is doing a homebirth anyday really with her, and she liked her, and then another of my friends is a childbirth education instructor/advocate and she HIGHLY recommended her.. so I got two recs for her, I figured it was a good place to start.
I have a neighbor that did a homebirth about a year ago- but she went with someone that commuted into town because she wanted JUST a midwife, not a CNM (or whatever the term is) and she said that in this town they are all CNM.. but a commute? That is like 40 minutes to an hour away if traffic is good! Not for me.
Now someone talk to me about doulas.. there are a couple of mamas on the Alaska board, no one I met IRL, but a starting place, right?
HoldensMama 06-12-2009, 11:05 PM That's awesome that you got a midwife, HoldensMama! Congrats!:D
Thanks!! :love
Pinoikoi, that's my dp's holdback was (is) too. The mess that will be left afterwards and that he would have to clean it. Like I would just birth in the middle of the carpet and toss him a scrub brush on my way to bed. :lol
starshine1001 06-13-2009, 12:45 AM Ha! Thankfully we have hardwood floors throughout...we're going to put the pool in the middle of the living room in front of the fireplace, and then I can meander around as I need to and not worry about wrecking the carpet! :thumb
Mommy2Austin 06-13-2009, 06:56 AM Thanks!! :love

My midwife cleaned everything up after I had Steven. DH had nothing to focus on but helping me in and out of the shower/bathroom and making sure I ate something. By the time she left I couldn't even tell I had just given birth.
HoldensMama 06-13-2009, 09:31 AM Yeah, I tried to tell him that they wouldn't leave us the mess to clean up. I really want him to come to the first appt so he can hear it from the midwife. Also to ask his questions and feel more comfortable with homebirth.
punquin 06-15-2009, 07:06 AM Just got my results from my first beta from Friday (17 or 18 dpo). It was in the mid-700s. My doctor said my progesterone was nice and high and that it indicated a strong pregnancy. A huge relief after bad betas leading up to my m/c in 2006. They took another blood draw and will call with the next results. They will test till I am up near 3000 then do a sonogram to date and make sure there is a viable pregnancy in there. Once I see that baby - no matter how small - I will be past how far I made it last time. It is the big obstacle looming in front of me... I actually woke up this morning feeling optimistic, though. Keeping my fingers crossed on my next numbers! :fingersx:
jul511riv 06-15-2009, 10:17 AM Yep, I'm right at the time I m/c last time, but feeling optimistic. I remember calling the m/w I really wanted about 4 days before the m/c. Now I'm thinking I'll wait quite a bit longer to even get her on the phone.
If I want an ultrasound, I just need to visit an obgyn with a machine in the office. I'm not too keen on doing a vaginal, though. So, I guess all I do is sit here and wait.
singin_angel 06-15-2009, 11:04 AM I've had some odd feelings in my pelvic area...not painful though. I have some pain down my right leg...now I don't know if that is sciatica or if it is cramps because I usually get pain that shoots down my legs.
I really hope everything is fine! But I know I will be nervous until I can hear that little baby heartbeat and I'm out of the first trimester.
So for now, I'm taking it easy, keeping my feet up as much as I can.
Possibly on a good note...dd was nursing and it was not pleasant...as much as it hurt, it could be a good sign that this pregnancy is doing well! Last time around I didn't take a hpt until 5 days from now. I so want to be 12 weeks lol.
starshine1001 06-15-2009, 10:47 PM Hmmm...I set an appointment with an OB today. I'm generally not a huge fan of a medically managed pregnancy, but with all of the spotting that I've been having, I'd like to at least have an early ultrasound. Also, if I should need to transfer care from my midwife to an OB, at least that Dr. will know me already. Is that terrible...to go to an OB with no intention of delivering with them?

Be true to yourself. If you want an Ob for now, then take one. If you want a midwife for later, do that too.
I STRONGLY believe in empowering the "patient" (or mother in this case :lol )
starshine1001 06-16-2009, 07:32 AM I really don't WANT an OB right now (or at all for that matter!)...but the midwives that I have to choose between don't do early ultrasounds, so if I want to be checked, I have to go to an OB for at least an initial visit. I have to know that everything is O.K. It's getting to where I can't concentrate on anything else...

What about a quick Urgent care facility visit? If I were worried about my spotting I'd head there first and then if they didn't do an ultrasound I'd try to make an OB appt.
