Hi,
I am wondering about giving my 6 month old egg yolk- i saw in NT they say you can give baby eggs starting pretty early ( i think they said 4 mos...but they also said add Tablespoons of salt :gross to the fermented carrots, lol)....I just wanted to check and see if you guys agree with giving a 6 mo old egg yolks, or more specifically if you have and how baby seemed to tolerate it.

ALSO, i am really wondering about soaking infant cereal. The doc recommended rice cereal at 4 mos, but my baby's butt turned really red and he didnt stool for a long time...also his weight gain seemed to slow following that. so i stopped cereal totally. but i am wondering if he would digest it better if i soaked it somehow. i have organic whole grain rice (flakes). is there a way that could be soaked to make it more digestable for ds? or should i think about organic oats? or just wait a long while longer on grains period? I dont want to introduce wheat, as i have just discovered that my 7 yos extreme behavior issues are at least partially if not entirely due to gluten. But if i dont give wheat, what can i give him instead for teething cookies/ crackers when that time comes?

Thanks in advance for any help!

well, imo, grain is a terrible first food, whole or otherwise. 6 mos may be too young to start solids anyway. do you know the eating readiness cues? reaching for food, loss of gag/tongue thrust reflex, sits up alone, has at least one tooth...following these cues may mean that you LO may not be ready for solids till 9 or even 12 mos. maybe just stick with bm or abm for now? and when LO is ready, start with mashed pieces of banana or avocado on the high chair tray and let LO feed himself.

My LO had egg yolk from about 6 months of age and enjoyed it. Allergy to egg is related to the protein in it, which is in the egg white, not the yolk - so I felt okay about starting egg this early.

I would also hold off on the grains, but when you are ready, I feed my bub ground millet and rice (which looks like flour) which I then soak. I put about 2tbs of grain in a little jar, cover with water and add about 1/2 tsp of apple cider vinegar.

I the morning I tip off any excess water, and put it in a little saucepan with about 3/4 cup of water and heat while stirring until it makes a porridge.

Then I melt 1tsp of coconut oil into it, add some pureed fruit and cream or milk and it is ready! I probably started this from about 9months (but even later would be better) and my baby loves it - especially with pureed pear!

I also alternate with ground oats which I soak as well.

wrt readiness, he wants to eat. he started watching us eat, and "asking" for food a good while ago. he doesnt have a tooth yet, but my older ds didnt get his first tooth until 15 mos...so i dont think he wants me to wait that long!

Allergy to egg is related to the protein in it, which is in the egg white, not the yolk
so egg yolk doesn't have any protein??? that's why i wanted to give him egg. what i have read says that after 6 months, baby requires more protein, iron, ad zinc than bm alone provides....

No, I would not give egg in any form. My sister has a severe egg allergy that is more pronounced with egg yolk than with egg whites.

At this stage your baby does not NEED to be eating table foods. We introduce foods for texture more than nutrition. My DS is now 8 months and all he has been given is butter nut squash, bananas and baked irish potato. I won't add any more to it - he does not need more protein because he feeds at will. BM is the most perfect food for baby and in many countries baby are not routinely given added foods until after 12 months. I would start slow, don't worry about adding in protein in his diet now. Per my Dr, as long as his BM intake remains around 30/36 oz we can just introduce foods for texture not nutrient. If his intake falls below that amount then we have to consider foods for nutrient and it gets more complicated.

There is some protein in egg yolks (more in the white), but most people who are allergic to eggs are allergic to a protein in the white of the egg. Every rule has an exception and some people will be allergic to the yolk - but the most common egg allergy is to the white.

The yolk has all the fat - which is why it is good for baby.

I am on a WAPF list for feeding babies, and we have LOTS and LOTS of moms who write in that their babies react to egg yolks. The conventional wisdom says that they can't be allergic to the yolks, but there are far too many incidences to ignore. We have repeatedly tried contacting the WAPF to get the recommendation ammended or taken away, but we have always gotten the same, "this is so unprecedented," type of response that we have finally given up. For whatever reason, *they* refuse to acknowledge the experiences of many, many mamas and babies.
I would hold off until closer to a year and after trying other foods. Meat is a good choice as is avocado.
