Hi all!!! I'm about out of some prescription prenatals given to me by a friend who chickened out of ttc...and I found out I'm :belly! Soooo, I'm wondering what a good brand to buy is. I know my local HFS has twinlabs, and probably solaray, and a few others. I really prefer one that doesn't have to be taken 6x a day like Rainbow, but if that's what you prefer tell me why anyway. ;) I just know I need LOTS of nutrients to support the 3 of us right now. And, even though I've been taking one-a-days, I would definitely prefer one that is 2x a day for absorption reasons. So for those of you have already done the research, which ones provide the best variety, quality, and quantity?

Thank you so much!!!! :D

I take Rainbow lite, but I take the once a day one now. I try to pay close attention to what I'm eating and just use the vitamin as backup in case I missed something that day. I think if I were more worried about absorption, I'd switch back to the 5x a day Rainbows.

I'm nursing and pregnant too. I love Rainbow Lite. I take the 6/day and I've never felt better. I have energy, no nausea, etc. It's wonderful.

I take 2 at each meal (so 3 times per day). It's actually easier for me to remember than when I used to take 1/day vitamins. And, if I can't remember if I took one with breakfast, I know that I can take my lunch and dinner vitamins, and get *partial credit* as it were. LOL!

When I took 1/day vitamins, I could never remember if I took them or not. Now, it's habit to take them with every meal.

I take a whole food vitamin from Megafoods called Baby and Me. Whole food supplements are absorbed more readily by our bodies than synthetic.

I went to the store and looked at Rainbow Light....do you know it contains 20mg of ginger? And that ginger can induce miscarriage in doses over 5mg????? I don't understand why this would be in their prenatal.

No way is ginger that toxic. Do you have a source for that? 5mg is less than the size of a pea, and millions of women around the world eat much more ginger than that every day (including, probably, me, when you average it out)

It would seem from the research that I have done as well that ginger toxicity during pregnancy is largely theoretical and that there are little or no known cases of a miscarriage directly attributable to ginger.

I would guess that it is in the Rainbow Lite prenatals as a morning sickness remedy.

Good luck!

Oh, and to add another product to the list, I really like Metagenics FemPrenatals. Expensive, but worth it.

Here is a web page about ginger which describes two studies that was done on morning sickness where moms were given 1 gram of ginger per day and had a reduction in symptions:

I can't believe that someone would conduct a study on pregnant women using 200 times the known toxic dose on purpose? I wonder if the actual toxic dose is supposed to be 5g (which still seems like a small number to my ginger-lovin self).

Ok I am a DORK!!! It is 5 GRAMS, not miligrams. :hide: I thought it was insane that they'd have such a huge dose in there. And btw, the main problem with ginger is not whohle food ginger but when it is used in supplements, etc not in its natural/whole form. Either way, I'd stay away from it in higher doses to be safe.

I bought Michael's Naturopathic, seemed the best other choice, but now I think I'm going to go online here and order Rainbow Light. Saw some good deals.

And btw yes, I know it's best to get all your nutrients from foods etc etc but the reality is I don't eat enough to get the huge amount recommended, especially when you take into consideration I am nursing and pregnant. We eat very well in our home, but I believe it is best to supplement in this situation to be safe.

I didn't mean to make you feel like a dork!

I just didn't want all the MDC mommas tossing out their Rainbow Lites, y'know? I think they are pretty good vitamins.

I really believe in trying to get as much of your nutrition as possible from food, but I also am supplementing right now, and feel much, much better when I do. I think that having the extra calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc can really help alleviate a lot of the discomforts of pregnancy, and if you are nursing, really help your body feed three people, y'know?

Good luck with your pregnancy!
