I thought I would share this to honor all the mothers who have lost children. In the end, after all the grief and pain began to subside, I realized that even though my baby lived for only a short period of time, he brought an incredible amount of joy to so many people who had rejoiced at his conception. Including myself.
I never knew that someone so small could bring so much happiness.
Or sadness.
I never knew when I first saw two lines on the pregnancy test
That I would never hold you.
I never knew when we first measured your heartbeats
That I would never hear them.
I never knew when I first saw your little form on the ultrasound
That I would never see the features of your face.
Or feel you move inside me.
Or caress your smooth skin
Or feel your silky hair
Or see the color of your eyes
Or feel you suckle my breast
Or hear the sound of your voice
Or feel your breath on my face
Or see the smile on your lips
Or feel the softness of your touch
I never knew that you would be mine
For such a sort period of time.
And I never knew that in all the grief and sadness I experienced when you died
That you could have brought so much joy in so little time.
I never knew that someone so small could bring so much happiness.
Or sadness.
I never knew when I first saw two lines on the pregnancy test
That I would never hold you.
I never knew when we first measured your heartbeats
That I would never hear them.
