View Full Version : Marilyn Manson?
Aura_Kitten 02-27-2004, 11:37 PM i don't know why this came to mind just *now*... but...
i'm a HUGE fan of Marilyn Manson. all of the other parents i know despise him and his music (although very few of them have ever actually listened to it :LOL)...
where do you stand?
Trishy 02-27-2004, 11:39 PM Not a fan, nothing against him, he's just NMS.
Aura_Kitten 02-27-2004, 11:42 PM NMS?
Trishy 02-27-2004, 11:45 PM not my style
AdinaL 02-27-2004, 11:48 PM I like some of his stuff. And some of it just ain't me.
I appreciate the fact that he sees and says a lot of stuff that other people won't. Beautiful People is still one of my faves, followed closely by The Dope Show.
Aura_Kitten 02-28-2004, 12:03 AM ah ok trishshack, thanks.
AnnaReilly 02-28-2004, 12:03 AM I'm not a huge fan of his music but I really like *him.* In interviews and such, it comes through that he is really a very intelligent individual with a lot of very interesting things to say. He just likes to shock people and push buttons. It cracks me up how some people think he's so scary because of the image he portrays but I find him much less scary than the teeny-bopper phoneys.
In my experience, people who really push the envelope like Marilyn Manson, do it as a way to weed out judgemental people. The idea being if people are going to make assumptions and judge you based on the way you look, then they aren't worth talking to and letting them see how "normal" you really are.
Dragonfly 02-28-2004, 12:08 AM I honestly wouldn't know his music if I heard it, but I'm with AnnaReilly - he's really an intriguing person!
I love that he was pretty much a "dork" in school. Did anyone ever hear the interview on NPR where he said that he played the triangle in his high school band. The commentator got a big snicker out of that one - "And here we have the Antichrist on triangle!" :LOL
Anyway....
Aura_Kitten 02-28-2004, 12:14 AM "And here we have the Antichrist on triangle!"
:LOL
4boybarians 02-28-2004, 12:22 AM While I don't like his music, I too have been impressed with him the couple of times I've heard him in interviews. There seems to be more perception and depth to him than I'd have guessed from his appearance.
(Yes, I was guilty of believing the worst based on appearance. :tsk )
*Erin* 02-28-2004, 12:32 AM i think he is brilliant! i love some of his music, but mostly, just him!
charmarty 02-28-2004, 12:34 AM My sis is in love with him.I admit I like his guts.
anothermama 02-28-2004, 12:42 AM I don't like his music AT ALL, but I *do* appreciate that he fully owns the message and image that he puts out and doesn't pretend to be anything else.
kama'aina mama 02-28-2004, 01:12 AM Ah me.
I feel like I should like him. But his music makes me feel tense and angry. Not interested in that. I admire his guts and his reasoning and his opinions. But holy cow, it's like he tapped into my personal nightmares for his look. I simply can't take it.
EmeraldStar8 02-28-2004, 01:49 AM I think he's great, i've been listening to his stuff for several years and have seen him in concert a couple of times aswell. I give him credit for not following the herd like all the rest.
Faith 02-28-2004, 02:05 AM Before kids, DH (bf then) and I used to like his music. We even went to a show. We had been to a ton of concerts before (Greenday, Everclear, Bush... even White Zombie and Pantera concerts) and thought his would be at least kind of similar. Well, we were wrong! I was freaked out!:eek
First at the show, we all had to be patted down and they confenscated my friends key chain and wallet chain, etc. Then we got inside, and noticed how much we stood out like sore thumbs. Apparently we were the only ones there who didn't know there was a dress code.:o T-shirts and jeans= No. Black faces, black dresses on guys, black fishnet stockings on everyone, black leather everywhere... I was a little scared just cuz we stood out SO bad. I didn't let DH leave my side the whole time!
The city we saw him in had passed a bunch of ordinances that day to prevent him from doing anything weird, and he was a little upset. He was over an hour late, no opening act, and then just stood like a rock thru every song. Not the most thrilling concert. But, we made it home safe and sound- although my friends wallet was taken and he lost his shoes in the pit!:)
I still liked his music the last I heard of it. But, since having kids, we have gotten rid of all his CDs and don't ever ever listen to him. We also became Christians, and he just seems too dark and dreary to me now.
Katana 02-28-2004, 02:48 AM I think he's highly intelligent, and has an interesting way of thinking. His music is okay, but I can't get past how much he reminds me of that psycho from Silence of the Lambs. Or the fake contacts. Both things make me laugh, and he's not a ha ha type of guy, you know?
I'm still upset that he redid 'Sweet Dreams'. Eurythmics music should never be redone. :D
ladylee 02-28-2004, 05:39 AM I'm not drawn to his music-just as I'm no longer drawn to most music that has anger behind it. I'm not particularly shocked by his appearance. His videos are disturbing. Ok. That's what he needs them to be. I've heard him speak & was impressed-I like what he has to say. How impressionable young people "follow" and interpret him is what's disturbing.
luvmy3boys 02-28-2004, 05:59 AM I'm not a huge fan of his music but I really like *him.* In interviews and such, it comes through that he is really a very intelligent individual with a lot of very interesting things to say.
Me too...I especially like what he had to say in "Bowling for Columbine."
tnrsmom 02-28-2004, 06:27 AM Moving this to the Media forum.:hippie
I like him and his music. I think he's brilliant.
Astrid 02-28-2004, 07:09 AM I was really into his music about 7 years ago but I haven't heard any of his newer stuff. Funny, his music didn't make me angry or depressed but it sure made me think... NKOTB music made me angry :LOL
My friends saw him in concert and thought he was great, and found the show very entertaining.
BlueDogGirl 02-28-2004, 07:14 AM He is on a very short list of celebrities that I think would actually be fun to hang out with. I really admire him.
I don't particularly like his music but I've enjoyed interviews with him.
On the other had, I liked (and have their albums) KMFDM but never heard any interviews so I have no clue if I'd like them as people...at least superficially.
I DO like a lot of music that has anger behind it.
Let's see: the song Strange Fruit, sung by Billie Holiday, for example. She was real angry when singing it..and sad, too.
The Eroica Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven.
A lot of Bob dylan's music.
Guns of Brixton by The Clash
Ascension by Glenn Branca feels pretty angry to me in parts, but I don't know what he was thinking about when he wrote it. (this might be really obscure unless we've got some seriously nerdy music hipsters on the board.)
I think that people who blame a musician for incitement to riot need to get a life....but this kind of thing is common. And not just against people with a crazy look, but also against pretty innocous people too. I could probably come up with a dozen musicians off the top of my head who have been blamed for political problems in a variety of countries.
Monkey 02-28-2004, 09:42 AM i dont know what it is abouthim but i really like him.. odd but true i like some of his music too, although i havnet herd much i dont won a cd or anything but when he's on howard stren i HAVE TO WATCH HIM VERY CLOSE! :LOL
Greaseball 02-28-2004, 11:24 AM I love his music. He's one of my favorites. I think nothing has been as good as Portrait of an American Family, though. Antichrist Superstar was OK, Mechanical Animals was not that great, Holy Wood I listened to once then gave away, and I just got the new one, what's it called? New Age of Grotesque? It's pretty good.
I would not be concerned if my kids listened to his music. I don't bother to keep dd out of the room when I turn on the video.
I'm waiting for his remix of "Tainted Love" that I ordered to show up!
Irishmommy 02-28-2004, 11:36 AM I have never heard his music, that I know of, and never heard him interviewed, but just going by appearance, I don't think I would be into his music.
How's that for an opinion from someone without a clue? :D
I like some of his stuff.....
I was watching a show with him performing with my mother one night. ...she watches for a little while then lets out a huge sigh turns to me and says, " Alice did it better" (Alice Cooper, my mom's #1 crush in high school)
I have seen him live a few times. I think his stage show is affective and I enjoy his humor.
CerridwenLorelei 02-28-2004, 05:06 PM but my teen loves him -along with Frankenstein Drag Queens from Planet 13 and Murderdolls both of which I personally find worse than Manson.
I used to have in my favourites an essay he wrote about Columbine.
He is a very intellectual person-he knows what he is doing and how to do it -he reminds me of Madonna in the actions he takes with his image etc...
georgia 02-28-2004, 09:07 PM i don't care for the music, but i do care what he is all about. he does come across as extremely thoughtful and smart, to me. when i saw the interview on bowling for columbine, i said, i cannot believe it but MM just articulated my viewpoint of popular culture and fear. whoa! i recently read that he settled out of court w/a stage hand who had accused him of sexual battery or assualt on stage. anyone know the details? it sounded odd to me
CerridwenLorelei 02-28-2004, 10:16 PM he keeps up on MM doings
I am curious how the court case in CA is going where the mother of his best friend is suing him under the Law Carroll O Conner pushed through
Though the drugs she supposedly got elsewhere -he has a rep for kicking people out of his parties if he catches them with dope...
and allegedly he had told her to leave because she was upstairs and someone told him she was using...
pamamidwife 02-28-2004, 11:21 PM I don't like his music, but there's something about his upbringing that brings him dear to me. I, like he was, was raised in a military family, always moving around and suffering from it. It's a hard life, one that many of my friends and I barely made it through, and I have heard his reflections on it and really resonated with me.
He is very articulate and very intelligent. I loved him in Bowling for Columbine.
I would love to have dinner with him. :)
CerridwenLorelei 02-28-2004, 11:48 PM "the Golden age of Grotesque"
Greaseball 02-29-2004, 12:58 PM Was he from a military family? I read he was from a christian family and went to christian private schools, where he said he could get away with all kinds of misbehavior because his family was one of the families that paid their own tuition instead of getting assistance from the school.
I think it's great how his parents support his work.
Vanyalos 02-29-2004, 02:55 PM I'm a HUGE fan ...
I recently got rid of my CD's & T-Shirt though - because .. well, I'm a mum and I didn't think it was ' appropriate ' to have a toddler walking around with me while I'm wearing a t-shirt with the f-word on the back on it ( I had the ' anti-christ ' shirt ) . Plus, I just didn't have time to listen to the CD's .
Greaseball 02-29-2004, 03:11 PM Hey, I might have taken those!:)
I have trouble finding a MM shirt that is a size small. It seems that all band shirts are a size L to XXL, so if anyone knows where I can get a small Manson shirt, that would be great!

If it's the case I am thinking of, MM was gyrating on stage and humped the back of the security guard's head or something to that effect. From what I remember reading at the time there was much controversy about the security guard telling people he was going to sue Manson just to see how much money he could get from it. The incident took place over a year ago... not sure exactly when.
georgia 02-29-2004, 06:35 PM anna, yeah, that must be it. it said something about how the employee was scarred for life b/c MM was only wearing fishnets and a thong. ah, the real world:p
CerridwenLorelei 02-29-2004, 10:53 PM "just to see how much money he could get?"
Like he wasn't familiar with MM before working the concert-sounds like he was ..
while there are others with true assault cases waiting to be heard ..GRR
TamiJ 03-01-2004, 01:37 AM Ive never so much as heard him sing/speak a word, but sheesh he is scary looking! :eek
Greaseball 03-01-2004, 07:44 AM When I first heard of him I didn't know he was a man. So when I saw a picture, I thought, that is the ugliest woman I have ever seen!
LaDeesseduTout 03-01-2004, 09:15 AM Just me chiming in.....
I like Manson, I only know a handful of his songs but I think I definatley dig what he does!
I saw him a Ozzfest last year.....and he put on an AWESOME stage show!!! I was really only there to see KORN who is my favorite!!! but I was quite impressed with Manson's show!!
I noticed another poster saying she stood out at the show and didn't follow the "dress code" wanna talk about standing out....okay picture this first off let point out I am mixed (black/white) and tend to dress very umm girlie/kinda glam on the rare occasions I get to go out with gasp...just adults....so here I am in a pair of black capris with rhinestines on them, with a pair of black and silver sandles, a sparkley tanktop.....while I am with my VERY Preppy boyfriend....and my VERY GOTH Bestfriend .....:LOL we made quite a match.....:LOL but he had a ball!!!
merpk 03-01-2004, 11:10 AM Gotta post this.
And have to start with quick musical background ... leaving out my religious leanings ...
I'm a Deadhead. Stopped counting shows when I passed 100, IYKWIM. And have never gotten past the loss of Jerry. :( RIP :( And haven't moved musically since he left the world ...
Okay. So that's out of the way ...
Back in 1997 when I was very pregnant with DS#1 (and we still had cable) I was just sort of sitting & zoning to MTV. A video by Marilyn Manson came on ... and while I'd heard of him, I'd never heard his music or seen him ... anyway, I think it was called "The Beautiful People."
:eyes
This is no exaggeration: Before it even ended, I ran gagging into the bathroom. I threw up for hours after that video. Wasn't able to eat for a day. And had trouble sleeping for several days afterwards, and nightmares whenever I did fall asleep.
There wasn't anything overtly gross in the video that I recall ... but it effectedly me so hugely and so ... grotesquely ...
Can't even see his face without getting nauseated, to this day.
Is that really weird? Or what?
So here's how it connects to my "background" at the beginning of the post: When I told this story to someone just a few days after it happened, he said to me, "Well, of course you'd react that way to Marilyn Manson. He's the anti-Jerry."
Marlena 03-01-2004, 11:31 AM So here's how it connects to my "background" at the beginning of the post: When I told this story to someone just a few days after it happened, he said to me, "Well, of course you'd react that way to Marilyn Manson. He's the anti-Jerry."
:LOL (re the comment, not your experience, which sounded really awful)
I've never seen any Marilyn Manson videos, but I had a somewhat similar (though far less intense, or intensely physical) experience at and following a Ministry concert a friend and I saw back in the '80's. Dunno what subliminal images were interspersed with what they showed on the screens near the stage, but they were pretty horrible, leading to some extremely odd and graphically violent nightmares that night after the show.
Greaseball 03-01-2004, 01:09 PM There are two videos I can't watch because they are so gross and disturbing. One is "Tourniquet," where he is eating bugs and pieces of his dead skin, and the other is "Dope Show," where at the end he is dressed like a woman and is hobbling around looking insane, or something. It's kind of hard to explain...
