I have a question about board privacy

After seeing how a few people have deleted ALL of their posts off of the boards, i have a question about security and privacy. Just how private are the boards? Obviously anything i write is public, but how about ip addresses? Do they stay private? Is there any way that 'big brother' can find out who i am?
