NCSS related question

We've been doing the extend-a-nap routine, bootin' it in and lulling him back to sleep before he can wake up all the way. How long do you do this before you test whether dc can do it for shimself? and how do you test it? he still cries a bit as he surfaces but stops as soon as I rock the bed for him. Should I expect him to not cry at all before I can stop the mad flight to the bedroom?
