DH and I were talking about our birth with our son and what if anything we'd want to do different with the next child (Not yet conceived and won't be till DS is atleast one) and we both really love the idea of a homebirth. He was iffy at first but the idea has completely grown on him.

DS's birth was a wonderful experience. We gave birth at a birthcenter attached to hospital with a CNM. We worked with 3 midwives after we switched (from an awful OB buts a whole another issue) but there were still back up OBs and hospital policy and burecarcy to deal with.

I'm a type II diabetic. I've had my bloodsugars under control for 2 years before my last pregnancy during the entire pregnancy and now 6 months later they are still under control so I know they will be during my next pregnancy (well unless I become stupid and stop following my diet but I obviously won't do that  )

If I could avoid the burecarcy at the birthcenter I'd go back there in a heartbeat even though I desire a homebirth because I loved all three midwives and other than the NST I had take during labor to get into the birth center (Required by the backup OB because of my diabetes) my birth was just perfect. No interventions, I got to labor in water, no one trying to push interventions on me even though I labored over 30 hours. But the NST alone is enough to make me not go back there... I had to be on my back because of how DS was positioned and I learned real quick why they tell women not to labor on their backs :lol I swear to me the NST was more painful than transition.

Anyways so would you as a midwife doing a homebirth take on a mom who has is diagnosed as a Type II diabetic but had it controleed for abotu 5 years (by the time I'm pregnant) including through a pregnancy. Is obviously educated on the birth process and natural birthing and has had a succesful no intervention (except the above mentioned NST) birth in the past.

Its to early for us to talk to people in the area but I'm just curious to get some opinions.

Well, I'm not a midwife yet, but I would consider it, definitely. I would have to really evaluate the situation, since it could put me at risk. It is a scary thing sometimes to be a midwife! If I were going against my state law, which I might be doing, I'll ahve to look it up, I could go to jail if there were a complication. In CA if you are commiting a felony, (praciticing medicine w/o a license,) and someone dies it is first degree murder, even if the felony didn't have to do with the death. I think it depends on restrictions in the state, what hospital you transfer to, who my backup is, if any, and of couse, most importantly, the health issues. But I would consider it. :)

I would definitely talk to some midwives in your area. Legally, in my state, with my licensure, I am prohibited from taking on TYpe II diabetics. However, what makes a difference for me is your ability to know what your body needs and the fact that you aren't on insulin.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll interview several people when/if the time comes :)

I see that you're in Indianapolis.

Non-nurse midwives are not licensed or recognized in Indiana, so state regulations wouldn't be a factor.

It may take a few tries to find the midwives in your area, so my suggestion is to start fairly early (though waiting until you conceive is prolly fine :)) and keep looking until you find the person who is right for you.

If you don't mind me asking, did you have your first son at Gentle Beginnings? There is another birth center in Indianapolis that is freestanding and not affiliated with any of the local hospitals. I'm not sure if you'd fit their definition of "low-risk" with the history of diabetes, but maybe its worth giving them a call?

Thanks for the advice and info on Indiana law... I did deliver at Gentle Begginings with the Towers midwives. I didn't look at Nurse Midwives of Indianapolis with this pregnancy because DH really wanted to be in a hospital, although if we didn't have GB than we would do that over staying with my old OB. For some reasons I didn't even think of them when we went through our what will we do next time conversation although its worth it to add them to our list of interviewies...

I really wish I could work with the Towers midwives without the hospital burecarcy as all 3 of them were awesome!!! So its a bit frustrating when I think about the situation.

It may be too late but I wanted to let you know I had my 4th child at the birth center and LOVED IT! Then I found out 3 years later I was having twins. They still kept me on but I had to deliver at Methodist hospital and that part sucked in a very big way!!!!! The birth center has changed hands though so I am not sure how the new midwives are.... DId you ever check into it?
Hope all went well!

I would more than likely take you on as a client, but I would watch your diet closely and how you physically feel. I might ask that you find an OB that you trust and can work with, who can also monitor your health and blood sugar. Here in OK, midwives & homebirth aren't governed by medical laws. So, we aren't restricted from the type of clients we take on, but common sense should be a midwife's guide. And you seem very mature and responsible about your health adn diet,.
