Hi,

I'd like to ask some advice about showing my home (selling it -- I hope!) and our family camp o' beds.

The realtor says I need to make my bedroom look more appealing to the "average" person.

So, we've had a family bed since we became parents 7 years ago. Right now, our room has a king-sized bed for parental snuggling, playing ship, and snuggling down to read (also known as homeschooling when I'm making records :)). We also have two futons side-by-side on the floor where our two children and I snuggle down to sleep each night.

The room looks like a big camp. I'm supposed to move the futons out and put chairs in their place to make a sort of "conversation space" in our master bedroom.

While I detest the invasion of privacy and being told to turn my home into a model home, what I really don't understand is how we are going to sleep??? Do I just have blankets on the floor in our room for us to sleep on; and then wad them up and hide them each morning? I honestly don't know how we're going to live through this; and I've been told that it could take 6-12 months for a home in our price range to sell.

Sorry for posting such a materially-oriented thing, but I'd appreciate any advice.

warmly,
teastaigh

Well, it's late for me, so maybe I'm not getting the gist of the whole situation right...

So...Dad has the King sized Bed all to himself while you and the two kidlets are on the futons on the floor?

Is there any other bedrooms in the house? Could Dad sleep in one of them (if they exist that is), whilst you and the kids sleep on the King Bed?
Someone sleep on the couch for a while?

Just blankets on the floor does not sound very appealing for a night after night type of arrangement.

Maybe you could take out the futons for a while and use some store-away camping mattress type thing, might be a little more comfy than just blankets. Though it would still be a pain in the ass.

I have a King bed too, and I reckon I could fit 4 people in it if I had to. It would take a bit of getting used to though, depending on how old your kids are (size, etc). You might just have to forgo the parental snuggling for a while? :(

Not ideal, but i guess the reality of it all is if you want to sell your home you've got to suck it up for the "mainstream" buyers :crying
What a bummer.

Could you mount the futons on rollers/sliders and store them under the bed at night, like trundle beds?

Personally, I wouldn't change...our house sold three days after being put on the market, and we have a bed with a sidecarred crib...the buyers really didn't care....

Thank you all for the replies.

I'm happy to hear about people having success selling their homes. That's not the case for my town and neighborhood where 1 in 4 homes has experienced a lay-off in the last 2 years.

I really like the futon-rolling-under-the-bed idea. We did that when we sold our last home 4 years ago. Now, we've got the king bed with the multiple supports under it, and you can't store anything underneath. But, I still have the old queen in my oldest's room. So, maybe we'll all move into there for a while. I hadn't even thought of it until you wrote! Thank you.

Actually, my husband doesn't have the king all to himself. I snuggle the children down to sleep (takes about an hour to tell stories in the dark and cuddle); and then I leave the room to be alone with my husband for a couple of hours. Then, we both go to bed in the king bed. Then, our youngest wakes up in the night, and my husband goes to sleep on the futons between the boys. I get the king-sized bed all to myself. I used to feel guilty, but it's the best sleep in the world ... knowing that I'm not "on-call" and that both boys are burrowed into my husband's neck or shoulder.
