I know this has been asked several times and I have seen all the responses about the normal process, but just wanted to clarify something.
During this normal process does the entire penis get a bit pinkish and does the head become inflamed? It definitely looks a lot larger than normal under the skin. And then the creamy stuff coming out.
Any pressure on the head area is what is hurting him, otherwise he says he is ok.
Just wanted to make sure these were all part of the process.
Thanks!

The glans is naturally dark pink and wet. Smegma is whitish and pasty.
Sometimes the end of the foreskin will be red just from irritation.
Other than that, I don't know. Have you used anything different as far as laundry soap, or bath soap, or gone swimming in a pool with maybe too much chlorine?
How old is he? Sometimes kids say stuff hurts when it really doesn't. They just don't like it! My 2-year-old says "OWW" just to get me to stop doing whatever it is he doesn't want me to do!

He is almost 3 years.
We have had the redness on the tip before, but this is really swollen. I noticed it after his bath that there was a larger bulge under his foreskin then normal, but it wasn't pink.
This morning, his whole penis is pinkish. It looks like someone made one out of playdoh and stuck it on him, because the color changes right where the appendage begins basically.
And then this morning is when I noticed the smegma or discharge as well. He didn't say that it hurt at first and I asked him to look at it and he gave me the "it's great, Mom" smile. But then he squeezed it a little where the head is and that is when he said ow.
I have given him a bath with some tea tree oil and put him in cloth training pants so he can air out a little and I can see when he pees and if it hurts him. That seems to be the drs biggest concern as well. Although I have to say again how great the Continuum Center is in NYC!!! I love it and I just wish Dr. Palevsky was still there!
Anyway, nothing new happening, he is taking a nap and does not seem to be feverish or having any major discomfort (only when he puts pressure on it.)
I have also never forcibly retracted, but ever since it started loosening a little, I have always gently checked to make sure there was no poop particles in there. Sometimes there were and I would just dab with a wipe, but usually not.
Thanks!
Kimberly

That sounds like balanitis to me and not "normal" I think that it might be a good idea to get a culture done and see what the cause is of the inflamation.

Just wanted to post a follow-up.
The Drs office recommended bathing ( I said I was using some tea tree oil and she thought that was great) and bacitracyn (sp) ointment for the outside making sure not to block the opening. The dr did warn me to watch his peeing. If he was not able to pee, then I would have to bring him to the ER over the weekend and he would have to have a catheter put in. But he was able to pee. He said ow ow ow, in a very calm voice after he peed Friday afternoon and evening, but that was it.
Yesterday a.m. I even tried some breastmilk :P I figured if it helped with eye infections, it may help here.
And yesterday afternoon (Sat) he started to look much better. The regular skin color was coming back and the inflammation was going down. The only pinkish area left was the tip of the foreskin.
One more relieved mama! :)

WOW, this has been a very informative post! I have a 15 mo. old intact boy, and I NEVER would have thought of putting breastmilk on him if he was inflamed !!! (Even though I used it to cure a clogged tear duct on my foster daughter and my son...) Cool! :D

Oh yes. As a matter of fact, I got a letter published in Mothering Mag. a few years ago to this effect. Using breastmilk in gookie noses, ear infections, irritated penises....... Works wonders! (Of course, I don't have any mlik of my own anymore...... But still.)
