hi there..
we just sold our home in south florida to pursue our longtime dream of living in new england..my husband needs to be close to a very active city for car sales which limits out ability to move to the country in vermont, our first choice from having spent many years of vacations there..

we decided to rent a place in or around the new market, nh area but have only until june 1st to be ready ..we are a homeschooling/ap family of 3 children plus myself and my dh and really could use some advise..

we need to know who to go to find either a home or townhome to rent in a very safe and educated-type area..found a group called the CHENEY COMPANY who told us about townhomes in off KIMBALL WAY in newmarket and have some other townhomes in newmarket, nh..we know nothing about this area..does anyone have any idea about kimball way? or where we could go for rentals for the year?..it is so very hard to do this via computer from florida as we dont know if what looks good on their website is really near a loud train station, on top of an industrial park, etc..if someone out there can let us know before we put money down on a place, that would be so wonderful..anyone ever used the cheney companies ???

we hope to purchase a home after a year of trying life out in nh..we are looking for an affordable small town but well located to my husbands job which will either be in danvers, mass or norwood, mass as that is where the dealerships are..

we also need a great pediatrician for the kids(ages 8-15) who is very open-minded about homeschooling, etc..a family dr. or internist for myself and my hubby as well who has a great bed-side manner..i hate going to dr's..:>...

if anyone can provide a link to a homeschool group which is non-religious, all inclusive, etc, in the seacoast area that would be wonderful..

please post here asap or email me directly at vermont5@aol.com..

thank you so very much in advance..brenda:>

I lived in Newfields for years (South of Newmarket), and am here 3/4 time, now.

Durham might be nice, or exeter, but they might tend to be more expensive.

A good thing about the area is the proximity to Portsmouth and UNH.

My grandmother and some friends have used Cheney. . .rest on a PM

I went to UNH (in Durham 10 minutes away from Newmarket) and lived in Newmarket for 2 years. I am not exactly sure where Kimball Street is but NM is quaint and does have a lot of college student types. I did not find there to be a particularily strong community there but it is in an ideal location for finding community. Like previously mentioned, Portsmouth is close by as are some great little towns. Maybe you could rent for awhile and then do some searching when you get here. It must be so hard making these decisions long distance! Good luck!

I live in Dover, the next town over and went to UNH also. Cheney rents to lots of college students in town and they own LOTS of apartments in newmarket and durham. I don't know anything else about them, other than I couldn't afford to live in any of their places when I was in school, and opted for a rathole firetrap in dover with 4 other people.

Aside from that, Newmarket is quite crunchy. A good friend uses a family practice in durham where she selectively vaxes. I use Bellamy Health in Dover where they're cool with my delaying vax for my new baby (and my doc is in his mid 30s and is pretty cute- Joe Dulak, for reference). He's wonderful, but I'm still trying to gauge how 'crunchy' he is (he seems more medical-model/traditional to me). I'll ask my friend about her dr's practice and try to get the name for you.

There are lots of homeschoolers in this area. I don't know many personally (I have a 2 yr old and a nb), but remember seeing info on groups that get together for support, trips, etc.

I've lived here forever. I grew up in New Castle, attended Portsmouth High School, and now own a home in Dover. There are lots of health food stores, food co-ops, and university-related activities going on. Portsmouth is just over the bridge where there is shopping, touristy things, summer concerts and plays in the park, near the beaches, lots and lots of restaurants etc. Kittery, ME has outlet stores for even better shopping. The closest hospitals (Dover, Exeter, Portsmouth) are fantastic should you need them. You can rent kayaks in portsmouth, go skiing just an hour away, visit Odiorne's Point in Rye (estuary/conservation area), visit the old forts in New Castle and Kittery (from long ago wars). There are lots of family-friendly things do to here, and lots of educational things as well (I love the children's museum in portsmouth), like the Albacore submarine, sailing schools, and lots of historic sites (Strawbery banke in portsmouth).

You can email me at beccareilly@attbi.com if you have more questions or would like me to check something out for you. I hope you like it here! I sure do!

I live in Newmarket. It's a cool little town, and pretty crunchy. I wouldn't recommend renting through Cheney, but there are a lot of other places to look at. Try www.seacoastnewspapers.com and check the classifieds. there's usually a lot of rentals in Newmarket.
We're still looking for a good, np friendly ped, but have found a great internist in Exeter(next town over). My SO hates drs, but likes her a lot. Her name is Dr. Yuosef, I believe, although I'll have to double check with SO on that. :)

Also, you might want to consider Hampton or Seabrook for rentals. They're both closer to MA, right off the highway. Hampton has a great community and is a beach town. Seabrook doesn't have a great community, but it's relatively inexpensive and on the Ma border. Has a beach, too. (Can you tell I love the beach? :p )

Feel free to email me if you have questions. lokiandazreal@yahoo.com

eek... I hope I don't insult you Zoebugsmom, but if I had school-age kids I certainly wouldn't want them hanging out in either Hampton or Seabrook. Hampton has a large 'migrant' population in the summer, with lots of tourists on the strip, and lots of bad stuff at night. My parents wouldn't ever let me go there with my friends, and actually, they wouldn't bring us either. During the daytime, I'm sure the beach is just fine though. It's advertised as being family-friendly, but I'd take my kids to York, ME beaches (or Rye or New Castle) anyday over Hampton.

And Seabrook is creepy... If the nuclear power plant doesn't scare you off, maybe the 5 last names that live there will (Seabrook is long-rumored to be townie-incestville). I know you're looking to homeschool, which would be great, since I'd never send my kids to Winnecunnett high school (hampton's school district where seabrook kids go too). It is inexpensive though, and not without reason.

Newmarket and Durham are nice, quaint towns. Portsmouth is pricer, but also a fun place. I live in Dover, which I like a lot. It's becoming more of a 'portsmouth north' as time passes.

I've lived here my whole life and you know how you get to have perceptions about different towns.. please take my opinions with a grain of salt. I'm quite biased!

No offense taken. I do really like Hampton, but that's because I know a ton of people there and they're all pretty cool. The community there has always been very friendly and welcoming, and most every one is pretty active and seem to act young, which is a huge plus. North Beach is great. I stay clear of Hampton Beach unless I'm working. Then I have no choice. Believe me, I wanted to kill all the nasty people there yesterday. There is a big difference between Hampton and the Hampton Beach district.

I'm not a big fan of Seabrook either. I was just putting it forth as an option since her dh will be commuting. I used to make the commute from Newmarket to Peabody and I hated it. Seabrook would just make the drive shorter. I did point out it didn't have the community Newmarket does, but it is being cleaned up a lot. There have been a lot of new houses and people moving in from out of state. It still has a ways to go, but it's getting better.

Anyways, I'm not offended. Every one has a different POV and I figured I'd offer up other options. :)
