And I'm actually in a good mood! I'm 35weeks (36 on Monday) and I declined the GBS test AND told my OB I'm having a homebirth! I feel so much better, I hated not being upfront about it.

At first the nurse told me I didn't have a choice about having the GBS test, but changed her tune when i told her I wasn't going to be birthing in the hospital, since the antibiotics won't be an issue at home. Then she asked if my fiance would be delivering....No... "Then, who will be delivering?" I told her I'd like to keep that private. She says, "ok, I'll let you keep your clothes on for now since you might not need the test" Oh, gee, thank you for *letting* me keep my clothes on... :rolleyes

When the doctor came in she asked about the homebirth "You don't expect me to deliver you at home, do you?" LOL No. I told her that I have a midwife but given Illinois' history with midwifery I wouldn't be giving her name, but that I am very confident in my midwife's ability to attend the birth (I let her know about the 20+years and 700+ babies of experience). She's like, ok, you've obviously researched this. As a physician I'm obligated to tell you that a hospital birth is safer." As far as the GBS goes I told her that I know to watch the baby very carefully for any symptoms and to take baby to see the ped asap. She seemed happy at that, asked if I would like to continue to see her for backup and when would I like to come in again. I go back in two weeks.

I went in expecting a battle, and left pleasantly surprised. Now, all I need to do is find a pediatrician who will see the baby and not give me too much hassle for delayed/non-vaxing :)

Crystal- That's so cool!! Good luck finding a ped. You might be better off looking for a family doctor. I have found that family doctor's tend to be more excepting of different views and choices then pediatricians.

Also I thought there were doctors in Illinois that did homebirths and that it was a fairly common thing. Maybe only certain parts..

Physicians are obligated to tell lies?

Good for you! Glad you found someone who didn't dump you right away for daring to disobey them.

Tehe! That was kind of my thought on the statement, but I figured I'd be better off not disputing her ignorance. I mean, it's not her fault she was trained to believe that pregnancy and birth are medical events... I really thought she would have flipped though.. this is the same doc who is proud that her c-sec rate is as low as 30% (episiotomy is about the same) and who's nurse said that water birth was extrememly dangerous because you can't regulate the water temperature :eyesroll

As far as finding the baby's doc.. I'm going to check out DF's family practitioner... apparently he has a large patient load but a great attention to detail (he remembered that DF was allergic to penicillin when he was younger when df had totally forgotten). If nothing else we can switch docs if things don't work out :shrug

I know there's a group of docs near Chicago who attend homebirths, bu farther south they are few and far between. I'm in Springfield and the local medical community is pretty ignorant on the subject (which is sad because this is where the SIU med students learn and practice). I think there may be a few CNMs but they don't do homebirths.

I think the fact that she offered to continue to do backup was very good. Many OBs would drop you as a patient.

My tip for the ped? Tell him/her that you're delaying while you continue to research and that you will come to them as soon as you decide what to get. If you say up front, "Do you take nonvaxed kids?" or, "We don't believe in vaccinating," you'll just get an earful. But the stance I mentioned has worked for many people I know.

I also think this is wonderful that you have a willing backup OB with whom you seem to have a good relationship.

Alittle :OT, I know this is not the Vaccinations forum, but when I told my pediatrician that I was not vaxing he just shrugged and said,

"That's because your Father was a Chiropractor!"

I answered, "Yes, and I guess you don't have a vax for that yet-?"

Just FYI, there are CMWs in IL that do HBs and take insurance. I know one and went to her meetings.
