View Full Version : Allright, darn it, I'm going to CD

Without anybody trying to talk me into it, I have been talked into it. Those of you who CD seem so happy with your choice, and while I'm not usually a tree-hugger, all those years of disposable diapers just seem like a heinous thing to do to the world. So I am going to try to CD.
I realize that there's a lot of great info in the Diapering archives, but they're kind of vast and scary and you ladies know me a little bit and can maybe take some guesses at what I am willing to do on the diapering front. Here's my basic info:
1. I plan to start CD after the crazy newborn period, basically as soon as James is ready to wear the "next size up" from newborn in whatever dipes I pick.
2. I have my own washer and dryer and doing laundry doesn't really bother me - a load of dipes every other day would be fine. I will not, however, do some fancy-schmanchy prerinse deal.
3. I would really prefer to use dipes where the outside/cover part can go in the dryer. I am happy to take out inserts and such. I plan NOT to use a diaper service, as saving $$ is part of my goal.
4. I am very excited about these sheets of rice paper that you can put in the dipe to catch solids, but which look like they might actually rot sometime in this millenium. Anybody have experience with those?
5. I know that the brand of dipe I choose will depend a lot on the shape of my baby's butt, but I'd like advice on 4 or so to buy and try.
Anybody else who has CD questions, please feel free to hijack this thread. Thanks!

The absolute cheapest way to go is chinese prefolds and proraps. You can pick up both off the trading post used for a small cost. I used the prefolds and wraps with my DD thought it was very simple and very cheap. No fancy prewash required. Just throw in the washer every other day...diapers and wraps together. Regular detergent. Just don't use fabric softner (interferes with their absorbancy over time). Also, I've been told to not use bleach...if they start getting stained, hang them on the line on a sunny day. I never did any special soak or anything in the diaper pail. I just chunked them in there. To get poop off you just swish in the toilet. Before solids, you really just kind of swish them around in the toilet. After solids, you knock the chunks off. Your wraps will last longer if you don't dry them in the dryer and proraps dry very quickly. But I did dry my wraps sometimes.
Now the one drawback to the prefolds and proraps...I never had any luck with them at night. DD would soak thru them. With her we did sposies at night. So I've been told that fuzzibuns stuffed with two joeybunz are the way to go for night. I've also been told that kissaluvs are great for the newbornish period b/c they really collect all that runny poop (no blowouts) but that once your child gets older they don't work as well. What I've done is really check out the diaper sites linked to from the cloth diapering forum and educate myself on the costs of new diapers and what they generally go for used. Then I stalked the TP for a couple months and have collected a pretty big variety of different types of diapers for the first six months or so. I haven't spent tons of money b/c I've gotten everything used. And most of it I should be able to resale as long as I treat it right. By having a variety, I can see what works best for baby before I make a big investment in one particular type of diape.
One more drawback to the prefolds/wraps that just occured to me. They didn't really work for us once DD was old enough to undress herself (right around 2 years). She constantly took the diapers off b/c the wraps were velcro and easy to get out of. Now this wasn't an issue for too long b/c she started showing an interest in potty learning around that time too. But I will be looking for a different style of diaper/training pant for this baby when they approach that age/stage.
There are some really informative threads under Diapering Archives that explain laundering techniques, the different types of cd's, etc. Even after CD'ing with my first, I was REALLY overwhelmed when I started thinking about collecting a stash for this baby. I found the threads in the archives very helpful.
One last thought and then I have to get off to motivate my family to DO something with the day. I really felt very good about cd'ing with my DD. I found it to be no big deal at all to wash a couple extra loads of laundry per week. And it was really a source of pride for me that I was taking this step to be responsible about the waste my family produced, save money for the family, etc., etc. So I'm definitely encouraging you to do it. I thought it was totally worth it.

Yeah, I feel proud just contemplating it. ;)
$$ are not a huge issue for my family, so I was thinking about doing Fuzzibunz - they seem really convenient. Being able to toss the outer layer in the dryer is really important to me - it's the only way I'll get any help from dh. He'll switch loads, but will not hang things, period.
I thought I would start when James fits Fuzzibunz mediums. But I'm basing this entirely on the pretty pictures on the web pages, so I'm hoping somebody will chime in who's used Fuzzibuns and/or is loyal to another, superior pocket brand.
I'm alson willing to hear from those who worship at the altar of AIOs. :D

Oh I LOVE cloth diapering!!!! We did the cheapest way possible with Emma, prefolds and covers. My favorite covers are from Wee Bees www.weebees.com. They have a side snap cover that is fabulous! I bought some newborn covers, they work from 6-12 lbs, and I already have the mediums that are 12-22 lbs. For night time, I really like Stacinators wool cover www.stacinator.com.
I have never swished a breastmilk poo in the toilet. It is so runny that it just would come out in the wash.
Fuzzi Bunz...well this will be my first experience with them. I have some friends that chipped in and bought us 16 of them!! One of my good friends swears by them. She absolutely loves hers. Because they are fleece, the solid poop just falls off into the toilet. The only problem is that you can't put them in the dryer. They do dry relatively quickly though...like overnight. I think with any AIO, you shouldn't put them in the dryer, I think it would just break down the PUL outer a lot faster. Just my two cents though.
Yipee!!! Cloth diapering is fun! And boy howdy will it make for a nicer bum for the baby! :)

I love fuzzi bunz! I only used them a few times with dd, and have just recently started again. The Bumkins AIOs are good on her too, but they might be a little bulky under clothes. I also like Kissaluvs fitteds, but they aren't waterproof enough to wear without a cover unless you are just at home.
I probably have the most frivolous reason for cding - I want something that's cute! Disposables are ugly! But, I will probably use sposies for most outings when there is no convenient place to change dipes, and for nights too.
I don't dunk in the toilet - if it's just urine, I throw it in the hamper and wash within a day, or put it in this small diaper bag I got. It has a fleece swatch sewn inside where you can dot some essential oil on, and can hold 4 or 5 dipes. For poop, I use the detachable showerhead and spray it off into the toilet.

If you're planning on Fuzzibunz, I would definitely get one or 2 to try first. I couldn't get a good fit for my dd or ds1- they were either too tight, too loose, or when I stuffed them for night, they gaped at the legs and leaked. I did have a couple of Happy Heiny's that fit well, I liked them better as far as a pocket dipe went, but I didn't care to stuff, unstuff, even though it's really not a big deal.
I didn't care for fitteds/covers, seemed like too much work for me. I used prefolds/covers for a while and it was ok, but didn't work for nighttime and pretty bulky.
This time, I've got Little Lambs AIOs for my nb, but haven't started using them yet as I'm not supposed to be doing laundry, etc., yet b/c of my c-section. As soon as I'm well enough for housework, I'm going to start using them. (I only have about 15 or so, and will need to wash every day.)
After trying bits and pieces here and there, I really think I prefer the AIOs, but I don't think they will hold up as well as some of the others.
I only CD part time, at best, so take my advice with a grain of salt. Good luck!! :)

When I buy new stuff I like www.naturalbabies.com
You can buy a sampler package for $50, or a newborn sampler for about $40. It comes with a pocket dipe, AIO, a few different prefold sizes, fitteds, and one or two covers. You specify the size and/or colors (colors cost extra).
Lots of the diaper stores you see on the banner ads have sampler packs, too.

I made my first bid on TP Diapers - for some wipes. So it begins...
My dh and his mother are both really into serging these days, so I thought I could save some major $$ by assigning them the task of sewing inserts. Has anybody tried this? What kind of material should I buy? Do they sell patterns for these things?

Well, dh took dd out of the house in a fuzzibunz today, and when he came back I asked if he put the diaper in the laundry. He said no, because it wasn't wet. I checked it, and the insert (Joey bunz) was wet, but the fleece inside the diaper was dry! So maybe these would work for naps/outings as well! :love
I bought 2 more today...:blush I've been spending all my spare cash on them lately. I've gotta stop this soon!

I LOVE my CDs!!
I have tried lots of cheaper stuff. I started out with prefolds and proraps. Cheap, durable, and the wraps dry just a couple hours after being hung. Proraps can be dryer-dried too, but they wont last as long.
Prefolds are still my fave, especially after I found snappis!! I hated the though of a prorap right on my baby's skin, and switched to pull on covers (nylon and wool) over a snappi'd prefold. Wool is for overnight and around the house. Bummi whisper pants are my fave for around the house and going out cause its nice and trim. I think if we had a lot of blowouts or leaky poop, I probably would not be a big fan of pull on covers, but with the snappi, they were rare.
I have tried a few fitteds, but for the most part am not a fan. Kissluvs in 0s and 1s are darling and are great for catching BF poo, but the 2s take a long time to dry (like 2 hrs in the dryer) and really arent absorbant enough.
Ive tried the MotherEase systems, but didnt find the one-size to be absorbant enough for a 6 mo old, although the side snapping cover is a good one. I do like Sandys, but only have a few for DS, he really likes that he can put them on and take them off by himself like a pull up.
I love pocket dipes for convenience. Dads, grammas, me... overnight and out of the house... They are my second fave. I have a half dozen happy heinys for DS and almost a dozen HH and assorted for the new baby. I usually just stuff them while Im folding dipes, and unstuff them as I throw them in the pail. I hang them to dry most of the time, but occasionally dryer them as well. I have a couple apron strings for the new baby and I really like the small size, but they are way bulkier and cause a diaper snake every time they've been washed. The velcro on Apron strings dipes doesnt hold like Aplix does.
I love pockets, but I dont love fuzzibunz. The rise was just not tall enough to keep in BF poo on my babes, it would shoot up the back just like in a sposie. And with the snaps I found I never got a really good fit, even though theres all those snaps. Dh never got the hang of them, they were too tough for him to figure out.
I do a prewash, but not anything special. I just throw in the dipes and set the machine to a cold rinse. That rinses out any little spots of solid poo that still stuck, or BF poo (which I dont swish- if it doesnt fall off, it goes). Then I come out a few hours later and put in a bit of detergent (just a bit) and wash on HOT. I love to line dry, but I dont like crunchy dipes and I cant imagine ow that would be comfy, so into the dryer they go.
There are TONS of Yahoo lists for sewing dipes. You can make pockets very easily, fitteds are a bit tougher, AIOs the toughest. Serging wipes is EASY as pie. I know, I made some the other day, my first time ever on a serger. I am a serious novice with my sewing machine (not good at straight lines yet-kinda novice!) so anyone can really do it. They werent pretty, but who cares? They got better with practice. Inserts would be just as easy. I wouldnt go for anything less than Hemp fleece for making inserts. Its absorbant, durable and inserts for small dipes will be great doublers for larger ones. For a shape, just find a pocket dipe that fits your baby and trace an insert that is an inch or so shorter and a half or so narrower, then layer them up (3-4 layers for hemp fleece) and serge away!
good luck!

How do the Kissaluvs 0 and 1s rate in the bulk department? I'm starting to think that if I'm going to do this, I'd better be ready to start as soon as the baby poos less than 5x/day or so. I don't want to buy tons of disposables and just totally waste that money.
Modesto Doula

greaseball- Aplix is hook and loop tape, like Velcro. Aplix happens to be more durable, softer, and stronger than velcro though. Most WAHMs use Aplix, although a few use velcro (one advantage is that velcro can be found in any sewing shop) and some use touchtape (shorter hooks, and softer to the touch, but comes open in the wash frequently).
If I see a description that includes Velcro or touchtape, I always ask before I buy if it it really is either of those, or if its aplix. Some people think use those as catchall words, or dont know the difference.
Smithie- Size 0s and 1 kissaluvs dont seem to be bulky on most babies. Of course if your baby is near the bottom of the weight range, they are going to look bulky.
No offense meant, but I dont see the point in waiting until the baby poos less than 5x a day... BF poo rinses right out of the dipes without soaking, doesnt stink, and usually doesnt stain (unless you are drinking grape soda or some other combination of serious artificial colors).
If anything, I would wait until you feel up to doing laundry, or wait until the baby was securely in smalls before taking up cloth, so you dont end up buying newborns and size 0s that only fit a few weeks.
Im not waiting for either, though ;)

Well, if baby comes remotely on schedule, he could start getting CDed as soon as I have built up a suitable stash. I'm scrounging around on Ebay and the TP right now for cheap NB/small dipes. Mostly, I want to get by with a fairly minimum amount of small dipes, and a poo with every bf session will not lend itself to that. I wish I could bargain with God for one of those babies who only poos every other day. :D
I think I might be in labor right now, so obviously I'm going to have to use a couple boxes of disposables while I figure out what to buy in cloth. But it may be a false alarm, in which case I'd have time to get my stash together.

I love cloth diapering, and Mike is also a big fan. We've saved *loads* of money. Mike worked an extra shift and we bought 48 new prefolds for EliBean, and then I asked on the trading post for any covers that people could send me for cheap so we've got quite an ecclectic collection. Mike absolutely loves saving money, and he grins every time we go to the grocery store that we're not spending more money on something that is going to be trash before you can blink. He's the one doing the laundry now, and he rinses the poopy diapers out in the sink so that we don't have to wash every day. When I was doing all of the laundry (before I got hugely pregnant) I would wash as soon as I had 3 poopy diapers so I didn't ever bother to rinse them. Mike would rather get the poop off and wait an extra day. :LOL
The best fits on Eli (a long, skinny boy with absolutely nothing in the way of hips) are Proraps Colors (size medium), FuzziBunz (medium or petite), and Happy Hieney's (medium). I'm fairly certain that Eli will train out of a medium cover, he's got loads of grow-room in them. However, I have a friend who's got a soon-to-be one year old son who is comfortably wearing an XL or Toddler size diaper cover, and literally couldn't get one leg into Eli's; it can really vary by the baby's build.
We have a few fitted diapers, and a few AIO's, but none of them ever fit Eli right. His legs are too skinny and there would always be these gaping holes. :eek Some of them, I couldn't get small enough around his waist at first (when we started CD'ing him, he was about 14 pounds, so everything was medium sized fromt he beginning) because only the smallest sizes tend to have overlapping velcro/snaps. In other words, I should have gotten smalls for him. He'd have worn them for several months, easily. At any rate, I found that Sandy's were not nearly absorbent enough, and too big for Eli no matter how I worked it. Eli's a total super soaker! The only Bumkins AIO I have claims to be a size small, but it fit EliBean in December; It didn't absorb enough peepees. I find we do better with our prefolds in terms of absorbancy.
If I had loads of money, what would I buy right now? Proraps colors in sizes NB to medium; we've only got two but I totally love them!! :love Oh, and some JoeyBunz. We only use the Fuzzi Bunz and Happy Heiney's at night because we don't have many of them, and we stuff them with prefolds. I have two JoeyBunz and I'm totally enthralled with them, I'd love to be able to get enough to get through laundry and some for both kids. Three JoeyBunz would be perfect for Eli at night... like I said, he's a super soaker! Fuzzi Bunz are ideal for nighttime use because the fleece pulls the wetness away from the buns, so they stay soft and dry. They're more effective than sposies at this! As a plus. if your baby has a rash nothing (aside from naked buns in the sun) will clear it faster than a night with Desitin in Fuzzi Bunz. :nod
We don't generally put our covers in the dryer, because we want them to last as long as possible, but we do often dry our diapers. Mike doesn't like the way the dipes feel when they come off the line, it bothers him that they're so crispy, so he often puts them into the dryer on air fluff for a bit afterwards. He also has no problem separating the covers out and bringing them upstairs/outside to dry (we air dry them even in the winter-- most of them dry very quickly). If you're looking for something which can tolerate the dryer and do very well, I'd recommend Litewraps (very cheap but meant for FAT babies; Eli is still wearing the small quite comfortably even though it claims to be for 10-15 pounds) or Proraps colors, which are sturdier than regular Proraps classics, and which fit Eli very well (I've never seen *anything* contain poop like Proraps colors; We have *never* had a blowout in them).
:OT I don't hang out in diapering much unless I have a specific question; those women have lots more money than I do! :LOL I look at the cute diapers sometimes and coo like everyone else, but mostly I think "Who on Earth can afford this?!"

When Eli was new, he pooped 3 times every time he nursed (before, during and after!) but around 3 months he slowed down and by 4 months he was a once-a-week pooper. Every 7-10 days, he'd have the biggest poop! Mike and I have some precious memories. :LOL  :rotflmao

When I got home from the birth center, I had emails informing me that I was now the prooud owner of 5 Kushies off Amazon and two small Kissaluvs off the TP. So it looks like we'll be starting up with the CD when James finishes his box of NB disposables.
Proraps colors, eh? I'll get a couple of those. I'm also going to get some Kissaluvs. Hopefully I'll have a distinct brand preference by the time we move up the next size in a month or so.
The people in the Diapering forum spend WAY more than I'm comfortable spending for something that is going to be shat in. I really hope that Kushies work out for us; the disposable paper sheets you can put in them would make me a very happy camper.
I used diaperaps ten years ago with my daughter and just got my order for this one. There is a set of their covers that is in the neighborhood and is on its fifth or sixth kid but I am not pregnant at the right time to make use of this arrangement.
Usually the breastfeeding shit just comes right out in the wash. I usually just threw them in the diaper pail. Once they eat solid food, there's a nice regular turd that falls off into the toilet. If your machine has a prewash or soak setting you can just use that whole cycle. Mine does soak/prewash/reg wash/second rinse. So instead of dunking or rinsing every time they all get rinsed out in a wash cycle. I put detergent in the reg wash cycle and bleached the diapers every once in a great while.
I would never wash as frequently as a lot of folks do. I buy six dozen prefolds, one dozen each size cover and wash once a week.
I did wash the covers separately and they did fine on a low dryer setting. They can go in with the regular laundry, really, and you let them air if there's no shit on them and use them again.
If you can afford it the AIOs do seem more convenient for laundry. Babies R Us has cheap Gerber diaper doublers, like just a pad for the middle, if the baby wets a lot at night. I never used disposables - once or twice, like one or two borrowed diapers, in some minor emergency. I could never figure out why anyone would use them; they don't work nearly as well as cloth. The diaperaps covers were the most waterproof, in my experience.
A cup of crude oil in the manufacture of every disposable diaper should make everyone stop short, especially these days!

Wow! Not only could our budget not handle that, but our washing machine is tiny and if we only washed once a week, we'd have to do four or five loads of diapers on that day. :LOL

Like seedling, we're all for the prefolds and prowraps! We solved the nighttime problem by taking a flat fold diaper and folding it up inside the prefold.

When my daughter was a baby we did not have our own machines nor were there any in the building. I took them down the street to the laundromat with the other laundry, from our walk-up, in the winter in nyc. When we moved to the country we also used a laundromat so we still needed to go a week between loads (there are ways in which I prefer the laundromat- it's all done in a few hours while you do your grocery shopping. none of this constant laundering as I seem to do with our own machines). We also lived in a building with machines in the basement, and had a small combination/stacked washer/dryer for a while. I never had difficulty fitting them in a load, but I did always have at least a full-sized machine.

Ok -- I didn't read the whole thread so hopefully I am not repeating anything here.
I DID read that money is not an issue so I would like to recommend motherease (www.motherease.com) one-size with their airflow wraps plus the ME snap-in liners (liners we we only use when going out and sleep time). These with the rice liners are fabulous. We splurged and got these with our tax refund a while back and could not be happier. We have NEVER EVER had a blow out (and ds came home from the orphanage incredibly sick and pooping all over the place). There are times when we don't have a chance to change ds for a while and motherease holds the pee well. They fit both ds and dd, who uses them at night (dd is 4). They are well-constructed and last last last. It is nice not to have several different kinds to choose from, as we just spring for the whole system.
To wash (mind you....we don't care about stains on them), we just throw poopies into one bucket (dry) and pees into another (dry). DH (gotta love this), who I call the "diaper fairy", rinses the poopy ones at wash time (using weebees sprayer). We stick all in washer, including covers and do one pre-rinse with just hot water. Then we do a full cycle on hot with some baking soda and detergent (we use Target brand baby detergent for diapers) and a downey ball 1/4-1/2 filled with vinegar and tea tree oil (we put about 20 drops TTO in the gallon bottle of vinegar for this purpose). We dry in dryer on medium (would be better to air dry, but we live where it is either too cold or too muggy for that).
Using the simplicity of ME diapers, we only use disposibles (WHole foods brand) when we are on overnight stays (and only because we don't want to drive home in a car full of poopy diapers).
We actually find this to be easier than sposies becasue we have NEVER had to run to the store on a moment's notice to get more diapers and because ds' clothes are so much cleaner.
For our newborn, we will use pre-folds and a newborn velcro wrap until baby is maybe 2-3 months old.
BTW -- not that you need any more convincing, but when we DO use sposies on trips, ds COMPLAINS! He HATES them!!!
Peace,
Smithie

For those of you who use wetbags - what do you put in them so they don't smell? I don't have enough dipes for a whole pail, so I use a MOE wetbag at home that holds 4 or 5 fitteds or AIOs. It has a little fleece thing inside you can dab essential oil on, but even with 20 drops of grapefruit oil and only 2 wet dipes, in one day the smell was unbearable. Especially if I do move on to using cds in public, is there anything I can do about the smell?
Modesto Doula

Smithie,
When we are home, I use wet bags only until we get a couple dipes, then I take them out to the pail. Most of the time, I just take them straight to the pail. When we are going out all day, i use a deo disk or in a pinch, sometimes I sprinkle a tiny bit of detergent or baking soda in the bag. Usually I don't and the bag only stinks at the end of the day or when I open it to put in another dipe. Also, if we have a really stinky dipe (these dont really happen until solids), I wont put it in my wet bag, it will go in a tied-shut grocery bag or Ziploc to contain it.
I've found that wet bags don't really work for long term storage... Pulling a wet bag out of my diaper bag the next day and smelling my diaper bag for three days convinced me of that!! (BTW: I put a dryer sheet in my diaper bag to get rid of that smell... It stunk, but at least it was a perfume-stink and not a pee one!)

(I'm actually from the July group, but hope you don't mind me piping in here.)
About the rice paper liners - I bought those originally, but found them to be really scratchy so I never ended up using them. I even tried washing them first, but still didn't like the feel of them. And honestly, the poop situation has never really been a problem. I would say that maybe 1 time every 3 months a poopy diaper comes along that makes me wish it was a disposable, but considering my son has always pooped all day every day, those aren't very bad odds!
And about fancy washing routines - I can't handle that either. I just dump whatever poops falls off into the toilet (maybe sometimes grabbing some with toilet paper), and then dumping everything into a diaper pail (with a washable liner). Then every 3 days or so I throw it all in the washer. I do let it do a cold rinse first, with no detergent, and then a regular hot wash and double rinse with just a little detergent. These are all just settings on my machine, so it's not like I have to be in there dealing with it. I do the cold wash simply to cut down on stains. If you don't care about stains, then it's not necessary. And you probably don't even have to do the double rinse. I do it because it makes me feel better for some reason.
I started by ordering a sampler package from naturalbabies.com.
Oh, and honestly, besides wool, I put everything in the dryer. Okay, well lately I will take my PUL pockets and just hang them in the bathroom when they come out of the washer, but otherwise everything goes into the dryer, and I've never had a problem.
I used disposables for the first year, and have loved cloth the past two years. Now the rare times that I have put ds in a disposable diaper, he keeps grabbing at it, acting all uncomfortable. He's gotten used to nice cloth dipes now! I am starting with cloth for this baby.

This is our first baby so I am new to the diaper world. But my good friend has 2 kids and she just sent me like 4 dozen (!) of these contoured diapers. I think they are the Snugglebottoms, they are hourglass shaped. They look pretty easy to use.
She also sent me a bunch of Bummis covers in small size... which brings me to my question... are these going to be much too big for a newborn or will they be ok, and what about the umbilical cord with the Bummis?
I just bought half a dozen Kissaluvs 0's to try and they came in the mail today. They are one of the most adorable things I've ever seen. I almost cried when I opened them. I saw some people on here saying Kissaluvs are not as good in larger sizes, is that due to the drying time?
Does anyone know how long the Kissaluvs 0s will fit an average newborn? I just received these and they are so precious I am already thinking about more!

I don't have any wetbags or washable diaper bags, we just use plastic grocery bags and make sure to empty them when we get home. They contain the smells just fine, and as long as you empty them promptly you don't have to worry about mildew. If, by some chance, I should someday have a collection of canvas grocery bags (wouldn't that be nice!) I suppose I'll have to start thinking about wetbags, but for now the grocery bags are just fine.
My only concern about diapering NewBean is that I'm worried I won't have enough covers. We're using prefolds, and I'm told that fitteds hold those runny poops in (and off of the covers) much better. It's not a problem, unless I don't have enough covers to change them every time she poops, kwim? Hopefully I'll collect some from the TP before she makes her debut.

I have one Kissaluvs size 2 that I used yesterday and it was fine. It was kind of bulky and maybe wouldn't fit under pants, though. Once I used it with one of those Kissaluvs boosters, and dd soaked right through it. But yesterday we used it with a Joeybunz, and only the insert got wet! So we were able to use it as an AIO, and not have to put a cover over it. They are too cute to be covered!

I love the way Kissaluvs look, arent they adorable? Unfortunately my DS can soak through the size 2 with one pee! Its always the one last wet dipe in the dryer, it has to be dried for like 2 hours, when my CPFs and stuffins are done in one. So I take it out and put it on the dresser for a day to dry, and usually its usuable the next day.
The little 0s are so cute though... Buttercup Baby Boutique has them on sale, I just ordered a couple. I hope I really go as late as I think I will, I'll have plenty of time for them to get here!
Grease- my DS wears a 2t shorts etc when he is in cloth, but if I put him in a sposie they will fall off of him! I had to buy him a bunch of smaller shorts when he decided he didnt want to wear cloth most of the time, and dig out shorts I thought he'd outgrown last summer (size 18 mo and 24 mo) The size 2 kissaluvs is actually trimmer than lots of othe dipes!

When I went to stay with my kids in Haiti, prior to their homecoming, I used predolds on them both, along with velcro wraps -- and I found I could still go several changes without a new cover (just by wiping cover in between). It was only when they had really horrid poops (which they did because they both had giardia)that I needed a new cover.

(x-post from the main thread here)
OMG...I just went through my checkbook and saw that I have spent $275 on diapers since I've been pregnant! :eek A diaper or two here and there from the TP and from Naturalbabies! That's sort of insane...I should have made a registry at NB and sent it to my family members and let them buy all the stuff, but somehow that seemed rude. :(
It doesn't even seem like I have that many dipes for all the money I've spent on them. For dd, all I have are 2 pocket dipes, an AIO and a fitted, and I'm waiting on 2 more pockets and 2 fitteds. For the new one, I have a few newborn and small fitteds, maybe 10 pockets, 6 proraps, and a few AIOs. That's not that much!
I'm glad dh and I have separate checking accounts. He never has to know... :tiptoe

I've been keeping a list of everything I've bought, lemme add it up... $150 including shipping for James' NB layette which I am hoping will last through 15 lbs. I still need inserts. I will have to call MIL and beg her to get cracking, bc James has heat rash on his little butt! Unacceptable! He must begin with CD ASAP!

I don't think I've spent more than $250 all together for Eli and NewBean. :shake The most expensive purchases have been Eli's prefolds ($60 total for 48) and his FuzziBunz (6 @ $10 each). Oh, and once I bought a HH for $14 because I just couldn't resist and I happened to have that much in my checking account. :LOL Mostly, I've been very well behaved. :innocent

I think Ive been pretty good, but without looking I really couldnt tell how much Ive spent on the new little one... probably a little less than you ;) Less though, only because I already had a bunch from DS. In bits and pieces, it can really add up for your first CD baby. I have half dozen or so HH, a couple apronstrings NB (that I will resale in a few weeks), a doz preemies, two doz infants, ten fitteds, 3-4 AIOs and a handful of assorted covers. I only bought the preemies new (cause they are cheap), everything else came from TP. I have a couple of kissaluvs 0s on the way and am hoping to score a few more, for a total cost of $9 each on those. The HH probably averaged $9 too...
The thing is, whatever I dont use, dont like, or doesnt fit can be resold. Same with your stash. Whatever I keep is less I have to buy for the next baby, and the preemie/infant prefolds will make great stuffing for years...
I already had half dozen nb proraps (which I probably wont use much if at all) and some small/med/large stuff... I really havent spent that much on DS's dipes either, a new HH every couple of months is probably all besides prefolds and bummi whisper pants.
What I look at is how long will that investment last? Through 2 children? Traded/sold for larger sizes? You would have spent more on 6 mo of sposies, I think. And you have the benefit of CDing your baby...
If you want to save cash, you have to stay away from the cute stuff and stick to your guns with prefolds and covers!! Thats tough to do!
I don't think I could handle so many different kinds of diapers! I like the consistency and simplicity of prefolds and diaperaps. The diaperaps covers are easy, cute enough and don't require anything really special in terms of laundering. Also prefolds can be used for a million things, burp cloth, under baby's head or hips, wiping up spills, etc. I had the hourglass kind last time but this time got the regular chinese prefolds. (In the classic How to Play 5 String Banjo, by Pete Seeger, he mentions a diaper is just right for putting in the banjo to mute the sound. You know he doesn't mean a disposable! :) )
If I could afford it I might get kushies AIOs for the convenience, but I had a few hand-me-downs and really, they were no different from the prefolds. If anything the prefold/cover arrangement is more flexible for different size babies and changing absorbency needs. But that's just me. Where I really go crazy is wooden and natural fiber toys. :)

ITA with Paula on this, we didn't start having probs with covers getting dirty till DS was much older. Even then we had probably about 4 covers and could just rinse them off in the sink and they dried pretty fast so we very rarely ran out before we ran out of diapers.

My MIL went out shoppig for inserts and somehow wound up sending me a dozen contour diapers. :rotflmao They work really well, though, with the Bumkins covers she sent. Add a Kushies paper insert, and it's the ideal diaper for when you anticipate a poop!
My used Kushies also work nicely with a cover, and I tried a Fuzzi Bunz yesterday which worked well for pee. I hung the cover to dry and can get another use out of it, no question.
Today is my first dipe-washing day. Wish me luck! Last minute advice is welcome!

Don't forget the vinegar! About 1/3 cup in a downy ball works wonders, keeps the diapers nice and soft and extra clean. It also really helps to rinse oxy-clean out (if you're using that).

Ooooh, Oxi-Clean! I just used baking soda today, but I will definitely try Oxi-Clean next time!

Vinegar isnt always a good idea. If you have hard water its good to use occasionally o strip residues off the dipes. It does help to keep them soft, but sometimes it can contribute to a smell problem. Baking soda is the same, it can help smell issues depending on what kind of water you have, but if you have hard water it can build up on the dipes (requiring you to do a vinegar wash!) Its a very complicated equation that I only partially get. I do wash with a cup of vinegar once in a while if we are having smelly dipes, but otherwise just a tad of detergent and an extra rinse are all thats different from a regular white wash.
Also, Oxy-Clean and vinegar both are not good for PUL (laminated) covers. Both of them break down the lamination, so if you are using that as a regular part of your washing routine and washing covers with dipes (as most of us do) be aware that your covers wont last as long as they could. I also hear that Oxy-Clean may shorten the life of your dipes, someone on the diapering board said she left a dipe to soak in it ( a NASTY one) overnight and it was visibly damaged the next day (think of what bleach does to cotton but not as bad). I dont know how much she used, what kind of dipe, etc, but I would watch the use of it carefully. Just like everything else, I think using it on an as-needed basis once in a while wont hurt.
Dryer drying isnt great for covers either, they will last longer if they are not dryer dried, but once in a while it wont hurt, unless its wool ;) Also, some covers are made to be industrial washed and dried (ex Proraps and Green Earth). Those are going to last a while even if they get dryer dried all the time.

I have hard water too, and I found that vinegar never worked for us.
however, on teh advice of the diaper board here :love I tried the Calgon Water Softener and a very very small amount of the downy advanced (which is safe) and we have had no smell issues since! very nice and absorbant again too.
We used the RLR treatment from wal-mart to strip them along with the calgon, and I was amazed how much soap was still in there, even after using vinegar and tons of plain hot rinses!!

Well, I'm having no problems with CDs when we go out of the house, but daddy doesn't like them to change them at night and they do leak a bit, so I'm going to use up the newborn sized dipes we have for overnight.
Both daddy and grandma seem to loathe the whole diaper cover thing, too, which is a strong argument in favor of pocket dipes and AIOs. I like the Fuzzi Bunz I have, and somebody gave me a Kushies AIO in the next size up.

James is almost too big for the NB Kushies, so I bought 10 small Kushies AIOs for a great price on eBay. My only concern in drying time. I love the two FBs I have, but I think I am using too big of an insert (a contour dipe) bc moisture keeps wicking up around the waistband.

I love CDs more and more! I subscribed to 2 yahoo groups, for FMBG and Patchwork Pixie, so I can know when they stock again. My mom came over yesterday and I got to show off my stash. She was impressed! She said back when I was a baby, diapers were these white pieces of gauze and that was it. She loved all the cute works of art I've been collecting, and gave me money to buy MORE!!! :jammin So now I'm waiting on some more fuzzibunz.
I'd be happy never to use sposies again, but dh still doesn't like cloth! I think Andrea might be allergic to sposies. She always seems to have a rash, which gets worse when she wears the sposies. I thought I'd only use cloth around the house, but I've been taking it on the road too. I don't want people to see my baby wearing a piece of trash!

Yeah, wearing cloth out of the house has turned out to be no big deal, particularly since James (and James' skin!) doesn't require changing each time he wets. Cloth, sposie, wet, dry - it's all the same to him.
I'm still using a sposie at night, bc it means no dipe change unless he poops. That gel stuff is freaking amazing.
i thought of getting some tushies bc of our cord issue but couldn't bring myself to do it...i don't like the gel stuff personally- so many synthetics- but i know it is effective. my boy rowan is sleeping longer and wakes to nurse or if the diaper (cloth) is really sodden, so he is getting less fussy about wetness. i am about to order the next size diaperap cover!

I haven't jumped in on this thread yet, but I have a few minutes now. :)
I have been cd'ing for 17 years, since my second baby was born. I used pre-folds and pins until Gunnar was born and I started using fitteds. I don't even think twice about it now, although this is the first time in all these years, with all my kids that I have 2 in diapers. Talk about LAUNDRY!!!!
Landen is a bit of a heavy wetter, and he HATES to be wet. So we go through a lot of diapers. I prefer wool covers over anything. A hemp fitted with 2 doublers and a wool cover were the only things that would keep Gunnar dry overnight. I do have a few Pro-wraps that I like for using with pre-folds. Dh doesn't change itty bitty diapers, but that's okay....I actually like changing new baby diapers.... :bag:
I have a couple of Happy Heiny's "Tiny Heinys" that fit really well for when we are out and about. I have a WAHM made fleece AIO that I like too. They sure are convenient when being out all day.
Do you guys use cloth wipes also? I didn't with my older kids, but started using them with Gunnar. Made washing a bit easier to me, not having to take out the disposable wipes. Plus, the cloth wipes clean better, since they have some texture.
Oh, and I agree....we have had no problem with meconium either.....

06-30-2004, 12:06 AM
I found that my least favorite covers- Proraps- worked the best for the first two weeks. I've been using them and Happy Heiny for covers over prefolds. I only have 10 HH so if I used them stuffed I run out of covers before I get the next load from the dryer.
I found that we went through covers FAST the first 10 days or so- probably 6-8 in a day. Our preemie prefolds and Kissaluv 0s were the only thing that fit for the first week or so, but by the 4th day I had to double up the prefolds or be soaked every 40 minutes. The kissaluvs were sopping wet after an hour, I love the way they fit and hold in poo (the only dipes we usually dont have to change out covers with ) but they arent nearly absorbant enough to go coverless, even the first week- like I thought we would.
Changing him every feeding (maybe 90 minutes) he soaks an entire infant prefold now, and Im really having to stuff them into the NB proraps, so I think its time to move into smalls. I can fit three preemie prefolds (2x3x2 x3= 6x9x6, LOL) into one, but its soaked good in an hour too.
I havent used much wool on him yet cause its tough to snappi a dipe on a NB who doesnt like to lay his legs down much. I only use the wool with the kissaluvs, and only have a handful, so not often.
I had to buy nasty disposables for him. I buy pullups for my 2 yr old (who pulls off his cloth and pees in the floor), but I didnt want to be seen with size 1s in my cart :bag: Isnt that bad? I hate putting them on him and I hate people seeing them on him. :irked: BUT- Im treating his butt with gentian violet for his yeast rash (thrush thanks to Keflex) and I dont want ALL of my dipes purple. I dont mind that some of them are stained, but I dont want purple on all of them. Besides that, Im not sure that Im killing off all the yeasties in our wash, and I dont want it to go on any longer than it needs. So hes in sposies until we can cure this rash, poor baby. Poor mommy!!
At least daddy will change a diaper now- I walked in from outside and saw him changing the boy, without me telling him to! That was the third diaper hes put on him since he was born! Not that it matters- I dont mind putting GOOD dipes on him!

I still use disposable wipes, but have thought about switching to cloth mainly because I hate running out of wipes all the time like we do now.
I've been using disposable wipes but I think after the newborn period with my daughter I just used washcloths. My super organic friend brought me a shopping bag of mothers milk tea and seventh generation wipes, so we have quite a few.
I have been using diaperaps nb covers with reg size diapers. I have one infant size prefold from them (sample) and it fits so much better, but I have six dozen reg size prefolds and I can't order another several dozen infant diapers. (or can I...? :bag: ) I have already ordered size S covers. We are washing them pretty often, but I remember when my daughter was a few months old we were down to once a week. The diaperaps covers don't get poopy too often. I haven't washed them much yet. I let them air awhile if they're clean and pretty much reuse them until they're pooped on. The waterproof lining keeps them dry and fresh, really.

I worry when Andrea falls asleep with CDs on, though. I don't want to wake her up to change her, but then she goes for hours wearing the same diaper and no special gel blobs to take the moisture away. Is that unhealthy? But what can I do; put her in a sposie when I think she is going to fall asleep?
we have really, really soft water so I rinse the diapers twice after the regular cycle's rinse. I also rinse his clothes twice and when I have time, ours. We have to be careful with detergent amounts, too. I wash the diaperaps covers in with his clothes, and have a wee clothesline above the laundry machines in the garage. It is so hot in there this time of year the covers on their dedicated line dry really fast.
Remembered just to fold the reg size diaper in fourths, not thirds, and it fits better in the nb size cover and he doesn't look so engulfed. After all the cord angst I forgot that was how I was using them in the first place. I have given up on trying to keep this weird stub dry. I clean it with betadine and if the mw can't cut it I will see a ped to have it cauterized or silver nitrated or whatever. It's very strange, but I had to have a modicum of convenience in diapering!

Greaseball, I'm sure every baby is different, but James could spend all day in a wet dipe without getting a rash. I say, don't borrow trouble. ;) If a problem develops you are sure to spot it.
I use a sposie at night in an attempt to keep MYSELF dry - it has nothing to do with the baby.

Well, I had collected mostly small sized diapers and a few newborns, and every last one of them is huge! We only have two diapers that fit her at this point; a preemie sized Fuzzi Bunz and a small Happy Heiney's with overlapping tabs. And the rise on that is still a bit high! I've been able to use a newborn sized prowrap cover on her, but it's big enough that I can't get the tabs to work right for her all the time. The big problem is the diapers themselves; even the infant sized prefolds are so huge that her little tush and legs are up in the air when I put one on her that's folded small enough to fit into a cover. :shake And to think, I wanted to use Eli's premium sized diapers on her! :tsk :shake :nono She's super tiny!
At any rate, if I find it difficult to get diapers on her, Mike finds it impossible. :crying So we bought some preemie & newborn sized sposies for her. Good grief, they're expensive; I'd forgotten how much those darned things cost! I'm totally irritated by this, but I just wasn't expecting Rivkah to weigh less than 8 pounds, to say nothing of less than 7. *sigh*
On the up side, Eli seems to be gaining weight at a remarkable clip, and no longer looks skinny at all, but like a very healthy little boy! :) :clap He's actually got a few (not many) medium sized covers which are too small for him! I think he might be 25 pounds, and that's very exciting to me. I guess I'm going to have to look at larges after all! :LOL He's nearly out of diapers at this point, but I'd rather be safe than sorry! :)

Rynna, have you ever seen a NB sized Kushies AIO? They were the teensiest ones I had, and since they didn't need to be stuffed, the fit was much better on his tiny butt. I would send you mine, but have already promised them to an expectant mama I know IRL...
ETA: I got a lot of 5 used on Ebay. If Rivkah's a 6-pounder now, I imagine the cost would be comparable to buying NB sposies until she's out of that size.

Rynna,
I had the same problem with Landen...he is long and very skinny, and the only thing that fit well on him were my Kissaluvs size 0. We didn't use covers at all for about the first 10 days. Personally, I love wool soakers. I have a small Aristocrat that is big on him, but I don't have to worry about velcro or snaps not fitting right. Everything is properly covered. :)
Greaseball, I do not change Landen at night anymore. He is in a hemp or an organic sherpa fitted with a doubler and a wool cover, either a wool soaker like and Aristocrat or a wool jersey side snap cover. This combination keeps his clothes and my bed dry, and is all natural. If you don't mind using polyester, you can use a microfleece liner next to baby's skin to keep them feeling dry.

I've got 2 darling AngelWraps QDAIO's in XS and he has only worn one for a couple of hours and never even wet it (which is a good thing, cause we EC, but STILL!!) The lame thing is I made all the others (super cute with tabs like HB's in pocket style) and when I was making the pattern the wings seemed too long so I cut them down; if I'd left them alone they'd be perfect! well, we've finished with our gentian violet, but the rash isnt gone yet. I put cloth on him yeterday an d the rash went from barely noticable to red and angry again. back to sposies :(
about nighttimes, I think once we can get back to cloth we might continue to sposie nuighttime. I dont like them and I dont want them, but it has been nice waking up mostly dry. Braden sleeps on top of a toddler prefold in an effort to keep a dry bed. Milk wets the top, but his diaper tends to overflow and soak the bottom, sheets and bed underneath. the last few nights in sposies the diaper overflow has not soaked through the prefold, and the circle of wet is much smaller around his butt. So he still wets more than the dipe will hold, but im not laying in a mini puddle o pee... YaY for that!
I don't know how ya'll with fewer diapers are managing! I have six dozen prefolds and in this newborn period I am *still* washing twice a week. I didn't have cloth in the newborn pd with my daughter, so once I got them I was really only washing once a week. Having to cadge a ride to a laundromat in the Catskills made that a necessity.
There's a waterproof pad on the floor next to the bed that holds the nighttime wet diapers, so in the morning I toss them in the bin (that is about two feet away). There's quite a pile this morning! I have this whole little system worked out and it works because our bed is just a mattress on the floor; Saturday, however, our new king sized bed with box springs arrives and I will have to rearrange everything!
I used milsoft, an industrial softener, on the diapers' first rinse the other day, as they were getting pilled and the dryer gets them *so* dry. It doesn't seem to have interfered with absorbency.

I have been using about 12 dipes in rotation and washing every other day, which works because I am SAH right now and MIL is here to help. It may not work forever. My dipes live downstairs in a box under the coffee (i.e. changing) table.

I have a gorgeous basket that a friend gave us when Braden was born that is full of dipes, covers and wipes right now. Its the perfect size and fits neatly in the corner made by our couch and loveseat or tucks on the bottom shelf of our coffee table. I usually change Braden on the couch right next to it, and Zack in the floor next to the table, so the wipes stay on the bottom shelf where I can reach them from either side.
I have two doz infants, which is what i will be able to use on him once I can again, and almost 2 doz preemie. At first I was doing a load every day. I wash anything of his with dipes though, so often the load had a couple blankets, half dozen burp rags and two outfits in it along with dipes :) Its not really tough to keep up with, its part of teh nighttime routine for momma to take out the dipes and start the rinse. Then I get ready for bed and put them on the wash. In the morning I put them in the dryer and in the afternoon, when I remember them (and the rest of my laundry) again, I pull them out.

I too am lurking from the July board, but I am July 1st, so I am starting to get pretty excited. My problem is that my mom has sewn hundreds if not thousands of Sugar Peas diapers (I used to co-own that company and my mom has continued sewing) so DH was like, if you see a diaper you like, you show your mom a pick and have her make you one. Which is true. So, my mom is making me a bunch of diapers (not sugar peas pattern, just basic fitted diapers). BUT, I did find these really cute knitted soakers called BJs marketplace. I love knitted soakers (covers, whatever) so I will be getting one of those. I just love cloth diapers. I have tried almost all of them. Just something about getting my hands on those cute, snuggly diapers.... I even love prefolds. LOL I want some dyed prefolds. I hate to tell DH but I just can't help myself, there will be secret diaper orders happening soon.

I love BJs! :love I didn't understand what the point of a soaker was, since it couldn't fit under clothes, but the designs were so cute I just wanted to try one. Now I have 3 soakers and 3 longies. And BJs are about half the price of all the other brands!
