View Full Version : Nasty little yeasties!

I am currently 26 weeks pregnant and unfortunately in the middle of a 4 week course of antibiotics for Lyme's disease. So, I'm sure you can guess what that means. Yup, I think I'm getting a yeast infection.

I've been taking HUGE doses of acidopholous 3 times a day- every time I have to take an antibiotic I also take 2 acidopholous supplements, the highest potency I could find at the hfs! Anyhow, I've been quite happy to have avoided an infection up until now. Just in the past day or so, however, I've been feeling like I'm just beginning to get a yeast infection.

Luckily, it is still VERY mild at this point. I'd like to nip it in the bud before it gets worse. Other than the acidopholous, is there anything else that I can do to keep this from becoming a full-blown yeast infection? Also, I still have two weeks left on the antibiotics, so I really don't want to treat it now only to have it come right back although I realize that I may just have to deal with that if and when it happens...

Thanks in advance for any suggestion!

my dr. suggested a yogurt bath or yogurt douche. now, i know that's just more acidopholous, but it might be worth a shot. One thing about yeast is that it needs a particular ph to grow, so if you change the ph (which a bath or douche can do), you can inhibit growth. I think it prefers alkaline, but I'm not sure on that one.

Hee hee, I've read on the internet before that some women get rid of a mild one by drying the area with a hair dryer after a bath or shower, along with doing everything else possible to keep dry. I don't know if it would work, but it's worth a shot :)

I know all about those nasty yeasties. I have been on treatment for Lyme Disease for over a year as I have Chronic Lyme. I have had it about 15 years before being treated. I was on IV antibiotics for 5 months and then had the PICC Line pulled due to getting pg and now on orals again. Don't take the acidolpholus (sp?) within 2hrs before or 2hrs after antibiotics or it will not work. This is the same for eating yogurt. You can up the dose of acidopholus pills, it won't hurt ya at all. I wouldn't douche while pregnant, but you can rub PLAIN yogurt down there before bedtime and place a panty liner there and it will help bunches. My 14yr old daughter is a Congenital Lyme kid, she got Lyme from me during my pregnancy with her. She has been on treatment for 3yrs and doing much better. Good thing you are on antibiotics now, you are helping to prevent the baby from getting it. I will stay on orals until after the birth of the baby and back to IV antibiotics if need be. Good Luck and let me know if you have any other questions!

You might look for more info on using garlic cloves internally....I can't remember all the info, but I've heard they can do wonders. Maybe not what you had in mind, but hey ;)

Are you consuming lots of dairy and/or sugar??? That's what tipped the balance and always got me in trouble with breast thrush.......

Are you taking the anitbiotic with the acidophilus? If so, try spacing each out so they don't hit your system at the same time.

Garlic cloves work for me. I just unpeal them and stick them in (some women are more sensitive and wrap them up in cloth). I find that the weak garlic you typically get from the grocery store doesn't work half as well as the really potent garlic from the farmers' market.

I second the advice about separating the antibiotic from the acidophilus. I think I've read 2 hours after the antibiotic, take the probiotic.

There is a ton of info and helpful people here:

www.wholeapproach.com

Be sure to check out the forums where you can ask questions and have them answered by fellow yeast sufferers, and a highly knowledgeable nutritionist.

They sell on their site, and if you can find it in a health food store, a product called Probioplus by UAS Labs. It has several strains of probiotics, instead of just one, and they've had a lot of success with it.

Also, I don't believe you can take too much probiotics. Whatever your body doesn't use, it will just excrete it.

Best of luck!
