I am having such a time! I figured out stockinette stitch, so I must be knitting and purling correctly. My problem is trying to K1, P1. I found this site: http://www.valleycafe.com/knitting/ but it looks like continental and I am using english.

If anyone has any tips, I would much appreciate it! This is really frustrating me. I'm short on cash and can't find any bamboo/birch needles locally and hate to pay shipping so I haven't been able to work on my wool slippers. So I have everything I need to make matching scarfs for dd and I, but I can't get this K1, P1 thing figured out!

Knit one stitch then purl one stitch. To knit, with thread in BACK, insert the right needle into the first loop on the left needle from the LEFT side - the right needle will go BEHIND the left needle. Wrap the thread (however you do it) and pull the st off the left needle. To purl, bring the yarn to the FRONT, insert the right needle into the first loop on the left needle from the RIGHT side - the right needle will be IN FRONT of the left needle. Wrap the thread (however you do it) and pull the st off the needle.

Basically, what pageta said. When you purl, you have to make sure that you bring the thread around to the front of the needle first.

OH wow thank you! I think this is why I am getting these weird knotty things in my hat!! I was getting so frustrated......

You can do it. You can knit and you can purl you said.
Just knit a stitch the way you would normally knit. Now pull the yarn to the front (not over the needle or anything just pull to the front). Now insert right needle into the second stitch as a purl (in the front of the loop) wrap the yarn and pull it through just like a regular purl stitch. Now pull the yarn to the back. You're ready for another knit.

You're knitting and purling the same way just remember to pull the yarn to the front before you start your purl stitches and pull your yarn to the back before you start the knit stitches.

I found some extra leftover yarn from anothe project and I think maybe I'm doing it, but it extremely slow going! I just need to make a swatch and see if it looks right or not.
