"My dd and I have been going to LLL meetings for BFing support. It's been great and the group is so AP encouraging. OTOH my MIL and SIL are the complete opposite - always try to reeducate me on raising children. :-P I just ignore them and their advice. I can afford to because I'm a SAHM who doesn't need or want their kind of childcare. LOL"
If you were able to read and understand the paragraph above then you need read no further. You seemingly have sufficient knowledge of acronyms, abbreviations and emoticons. Emoticons
Although our boards have a smilies feature (see Smilies legend to your left) you may still encounter the usage of these emoticons within a post.
These are keyboard graphics faces to help express the emotion of your statement. To see the faces you should lean your head to the left when you look at them.
:-) Smile, grin, happy face, way to let someone know that it is a postive statement
;-) Wink...there are many variations of this "emoticon"
8-)* Smile from someone with glasses
:-( Frown
:-O Amazement
:P* Sticking out my tongue at you
:-Q* Nausea, disgust
:O) embarassed
CAPITAL LETTERS- Typing a message in capital letters is considered the equivalent of shouting. Therefore refrain from typing in caps or you might land yourself in trouble with someone. However, caps are used occasionally for emphasis of a word or two.
all lower case letters (for proper nouns, sentence beginnings, etc.) - there are usually two reasons a person does this 1-The person is too lazy to reach down with their little finger and hit the shift key and prefers personal convenience over appearance ;)
2 - it's done by a mom nursing her little one while typing and can't manage to capitalize with one hand. Be understanding. It's kinder than all caps. :)
That's it in a nutshell! I hope it helps explain some of the message mysteries you've encountered!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Most of the abbreviations I have figured out, but it was nice to read through & make sure I was right! One thing- sometimes I may post in all lower case, not because I am nursing my little one, but because I am nursing my "big" one! At two and a half he makes for an awkward bundle! natch is indeed short for naturally... it's originally a term from a ways back.... Archie & the gang used to say it, and i dont remember what the date on those issues was...
it became adopted to the net, presumably, because it's an abbreviation.

ISO - I believe it means "in search of" but here's a thread of discussion about it: http://mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?s=&postid=166242#post166242
EC - Elimination Communication which is parent/infant communication to express the need to go and means no need for diapers. :)

Can we do something like TBC.To Be Continued....I am so it seems anyways...in the midle of typing a reply, and a baby wakes up or something else that requires me to stop, and post right in the middle of what I was saying. If everyone knew what TBC meant we could just type it at the bottom of our posts and no one would get upset.Everyone would totally understand, and come back to it when you have a chance.........Just a thought.I will be putting it in my posts anyways, but if you added it to this list,it would make it more aware,ya know?

Could I add a couple I like to use?
EBM--expressed breast milk. Your baby is either bfed or EBMfed. I hate when people call breastmilk bm--ick, that's bowel movement in my book!
ABM--artificial baby milk. I hate to call it formula as that makes it sound too scientific and legitimate.
EBF--extended breastfeeding. Most of the time, here, that means past one year (in mainstream society, of course, anthing past 3 months is extended!) :crying

why is it Dear Son and Dear Husband, etc, and not just Husband (H) and son (s) ? why the dear? i can see using it on occasion to be affectionate, but it has always been awkward for me to put DH DS all the time. i just dont talk that way IRL so it seems odd to type it... well i guess i dont really think about it now, im so used to it, but i am still wondering.....
NewMa
11-29-2002, 03:37 PM
Yeah, I wonder this too, stirringleaf. Does anyone know how this convention originated? It seems very artificial. But remember, the "D" could alternately be "dear" or "damn" depending on your mood. :LOL
mamabeard
11-29-2002, 03:41 PM
:LOL ... yeah, i usually just refer to them as "my son" and "my boyfriend".. as for the artificiality, i feel this way sometimes too, but when i see it i use it as a reminder that when it comes down to it, they really are dear. (and dorky..)

I was told you could consider it sarcastically, as well. darling husband - or you could substitute another d - i think having 2 letters help differentiate between another meaning. plus, it seems to be historical, not limited to this board :)

I have often wondered how "dh" and "dd" and all the rest originated! I have seen them on every message board I've been to. They seem quite universal. Also "AF," it just seems so overly quaint and tactful, but again, I've seen it used consistently on many boards. And it is quick and easy to type. Wonder how long these abbreviations have been around and how they originally got started.

Quirky

I've seen that too and wondered; I think it may be an abbreviation for a Hebrew phrase because the women who use it are Jewish (I think).
merpk
01-23-2003, 01:39 AM
Yes, it's a Jewish thing. :)
The b'H is an acronym for the Hebrew "barukh HaShem," literally meaning "bless G-d," or idiomatically, "thank G-d."
The bs'd is an acronym for the Aramaic "b'siyata di'Shmaya," meaning "with the help of Heaven."
They are written (usually in Hebrew letters) on the top of a page of writing, before writing anything, one or the other, interchangeably. Orthodox Jewish folks will write it on every page they write. On the Internet & on the printed English page, the letters you saw are the way it comes out ...

The thread list is filled with discussions that are active. The most active are on page 1 and the latest posted to are at the top of the list. If a thread falls down to the bottom of the thread list or out of sight to page 2 or beyond a person may post a new reply to it with the word "bump" to move it to the top of the list on page 1. They do so either to make the thread visible for someone else or to encourage more responses to the thread.

I think it's "positive for group B strep". It's something that is tested for in pregnancy. A positive can be very dangerous for the child, and it is best for the baby to be born in the sack. Antibiotics are usually administered during labor.
Does that sound like what was meant in the post in question?

I was looking through the trading post and was wondering about these:
EC (I'm guessing not Elimination Communication in this context)
PPD (again, not post partum depression here, postage something?)
FS: for sale?
FSOT: for sale or trade?
ISO - I don't have a guess for this one
Are there more that are selling/buying specific?
Thanks!

Frankly Speaking

These abbreviations came about in the days prior to the internet. Then we had local bulletin board services (BBS) that were all alpha numeric and no graphics. There were information pages, posting sites and chat rooms. The chat rooms were by far the most popular and it was not unusual to have a dozen or more participants on line at one time. The conversation would move so fast it was difficult to read and keep up sometimes. At these times the best you could do was 1 or 2 line messages or you would miss half of the conversation or the conversation would move past your reply. You also had to be a fast and accurate typist. The abbreviations were so that you could get your say in and not get behind or lost in it''s meaning. We have come so far in such a short time!
The first time I saw TIA at the end of a message, I thought it was her name, Tia! :rotflmao

When you post to a thread it moves it to the top of the forum right? So the list of threads in any forum is in order of how recently they were posted on.

They can be confusing, huh? The first time I saw dh in a chat room and I found out what it meant, I swore I would not use it. And for a long time I dutifully typed out my husband. I still use the full word often, but I use dh more now. In the CD (cloth diapering) board I was on, we used dd to mean disposable diapers as well as DD for dear daughter. My mom assumed LOL meant lots of love, so now on my family groups page everyone signs their postings lol and I can't figure out what is so funny.
And I know that one member here has GOT GD? as her senior member name and for awhile I thought she had gestational diabetes. LOL
The first time someone mentioned AF I had no clue what that was. She said it meant Aunt Flo. I said, "who is Aunt Flo?" I just call it my period. I had a college roommate who referred to it as her Aunt Sally coming to visit, but Flo makes more sense. I still say period and having sex instead of AF and BD (baby dancing, which doesn't mean dancing with your baby, it means doing the deed).
BTW, 1HT (one handed typing) and NAKing here.
Viola

Oh, the ones I'm still confused about are BFP and BFN. I thought BFP was barely faint positive, but that doesn't even make sense, now that I think about it. Oh, but I read this whole thread abd found this: BFN: Bald Face Negative (re: pregnancy test)

OMG I read all 10 pages, and most of them were really enlightening. There were a couple that I think meant something else, though.
BFN - I was told meant Big Fat Negative
BFP - Same Token, Big Fat Positive
