View Full Version : When is your first midwife/OB appointment? famousmockngbrd 11-02-2004, 08:24 PM Mine is Dec. 2nd. I figured there is no point in going until it's likely they can hear a heartbeat. But the wait is killing me! I wanna hear that tiny heart beating! motherofthree 11-02-2004, 08:48 PM Mine is this Friday. I've noticed that OB won't see you until you're much further along. I would like my midwife to check a BHCG since I had a chemical pregnancy before and want to make sure my hormone levels are elevating properly. LuvMy2Kidz 11-02-2004, 09:30 PM Haven't contacted anyone yet. We're moving to another state in the next few months so I probably won't bother until after the move, although I might give the MW in the new state a call to give her a "heads up" so to speak. nfpmom 11-03-2004, 09:54 AM I'm seeing the MW Dec. 4 - I'll be 10 weeks at that point. take care Selissa 11-03-2004, 10:40 AM well iam waiting to hear back from a local lay mw..if i dont' here from her by 12 qwwks. I will get i contact with the local cnm's. I'm sure at that point we woud schedule a get reaquainted meeting and commence with oncea month appts :D ccohenou 11-03-2004, 12:32 PM I'm visiting with a midwife on the 16th. I'm not 100% sure if I'll hire her, but I wanted to get rolling on finding someone. DesireeH 11-03-2004, 01:03 PM I am meeting mine for a consultation on Nov 19. She is a homebirth midwife and she is actually coming here for the consultation too which I didnt even know they did! LOL soccerchic21 11-07-2004, 12:03 AM My first appt is Dec 15th and I will be in my 11th week. Do you think I will be able to hear the heartbeat then? I hope so. sophie69 11-07-2004, 11:13 AM Im meeting mine on 22nd this month (i'll only be 8-9weeks by then) I'm sure she is going to tell me I came too early as with Harvey they didnt book me in til I was 10 weeks. Nevermind though it will put my mind at rest thats its all ok by seeing her.lol :) leosmama20 11-07-2004, 12:22 PM My first appt. with my midwife is Nov 22nd. I will be 8 weeks at that point. They see you at 8 weeks and then once every 4 weeks until you get closer to the end. Emily famousmockngbrd 11-07-2004, 07:40 PM My first appt is Dec 15th and I will be in my 11th week. Do you think I will be able to hear the heartbeat then? I hope so. Sarah, you should definitely be able to hear it. ccohenou 11-08-2004, 06:44 AM Well, with Simon the mw couldn't hear his heartbeat at 12 weeks...She sent me for an ultrasound and he was fine, but it REALLY freaked me out. The ultrasound operator was a little surprised that she was even concerned and felt that at 12 weeks, you still might or might not hear it. I have heard of people being able to hear baby with a doppler as early as 8-10 weeks though. I think it depends on the position of your uterus, baby, etc. DesireeH 11-08-2004, 07:54 AM I'll only be 6 weeks but its just to meet her and she likes to talk about diet and nutrition she said. MamanFrançaise 11-08-2004, 01:46 PM I just called my Ob today since I can't get ahold of a midwife... I've left several messages. But my first appointment is January 13... which seems a little late to me. Ary99 11-08-2004, 01:54 PM I go in Wedneday 11/10. I'm hoping he will do a vaginal u/s so I can make sure the baby is developing and has a good heart beat. I saw my son's HB at 5 weeks three days with a vag u/s so I'm hoping and praying for another goo outcome! July05mama 11-08-2004, 06:07 PM I go 11/18 and they are planning on doing a vaginal u/s. I will be 7w1d at that point. Can't wait!! kemmasmom 11-08-2004, 11:13 PM Ours is November 30th, they told us that was the soonest they could see a heartbeat on U/S. ccohenou 11-09-2004, 06:07 AM I'm curious as to why you all are planning early ultrasounds? Do you have an indication of a problem, or not sure of dates, or...? Not questioning your decision, just wondering since this wasn't something that was offered to me in my last pregnancy which otherwise was the pregnancy of 1000 ultrasounds :) . Ary99 11-09-2004, 08:14 AM We are "recovering" fertility patients. My first son was a miracle after 3 1/2 years of IF; this baby was conceived only after about 8 months, but because I'm in my mid 30s and have a history of fertility issues, my doc will do an early u/s to check to be sure everything is ok. It's actually hard for me to be pregnant without the support of the fertility center staff. I'm not quite sure how to just be a regular pregnant person. Marielena 11-09-2004, 09:18 AM Mine is Dec 6th - I can't wait! kemmasmom 11-09-2004, 12:05 PM My doctor does a quick u/s at every visit until the big one at 20 weeks. He says it is the best way to reassure mom that everything is going okay. I really enjoyed it with the first one. famousmockngbrd 11-09-2004, 07:31 PM Raina - have you heard that ultrasounds may not be as harmless as doctors once thought they were? There is some concern that the ultrasound waves may temporarily disrupt normal cellular activity, which could be harmful to a developing fetus. I only mention this because you may want to forego the monthly u/s this time around. If I find a link to an article about this, I will post it. ETA: Here's one - :) http://www.unhinderedliving.com/pultra.html SammiCheng 11-15-2004, 04:27 AM I too had early scan. At 5+ weeks. Had spotting, so was very worried - mostly worried that it could be ectopic (never had any form of bleeding prev preg). U/S scan showed pregnancy sac, nothing much, so did a vag scan. Showed a regular HB, which is encouraging, but nevertheless still very unsettling with the spotting! Was put on progesterone. *sigh* ..... I'm on a waiting list for the birthing center (here it's called Maison de Naissance) and have to attend a meeting on Dec.7th where they will inform us of the way they do things there. After the meeting, we will have to decide if we want to go this route (that is if we meet their requierment (sp?)) They start the visit at 12w so it won't be before January 10th. If I can't have a midwife... well, I'll try to get the same generalist I had for my son; but she moved in another clinic and you have to give birth with the doctor who is on call :eyesroll Max's Mami 11-16-2004, 03:03 PM I am going on Mon. (11/22). Due to the miscarriage I had 4 weeks ago they are not sure if the recent pos. HPT is residual or if its a new pregnancy. With the m/s I am pretty sure its a new pregnancy. But they wanted me to wait til I would be (we think) 6 weeks so they can see something on the vaginal u/s. I had considered going with a midwife so I could deliver at the birth center (before the m/c) but with everything that has happened I really want to stay with my OB. I really love him - he delivered Maxi and is very open minded, does not push uneccessary medical intervention and is just so compassionate - I feel very comfortable with him. I am just dying til Mon! I have taken a HPT everyday since last Thurs. and have enough for one everyday through the appt. on Mon. I just need the reassurance that they arent positive from the hormones left over from the m/c. Crazy I know! OnTheFence 11-16-2004, 03:12 PM I'm curious as to why you all are planning early ultrasounds? Do you have an indication of a problem, or not sure of dates, or...? Not questioning your decision, just wondering since this wasn't something that was offered to me in my last pregnancy which otherwise was the pregnancy of 1000 ultrasounds :) . I had one for dating and history of miscarriage. I also have a uterine deformity so it just really calms me down to make sure implantation took place in a safe place. This one is definitely implanted in a really great spot, and had a strong six week heartrate of 117. My next Ultrasound will be around the 19-20 week mark. My last pregnancy I had one at 12 weeks, but as long as we get a strong heart beat at my next appointment then I don't want to do one. I want to do as little intervention as possible with this pregnancy. My last pregnancy was high risk, I am taking a different approach with this pregnancy all together. SunnyBabyIn2005 11-17-2004, 04:29 PM Nov. 30th, my midwife is having a prenatal party with all her clients :thumb |
