I am planning a homebirth anyways so I would have to pay for it regardless but just wondering if there are any others without insurance?
The only thing that freaks me out is if I have to transfer for some odd reason! LOL
I had a HMO until recently but I hated them so I cancelled and no one else would take me until 2006 because of a medication they gave me in 2001. Ugh!

Thanks for the congrats! Same to you. :)
Well, this is my first pregnancy and I am very nervous about everything so I'm not sure yet about using a midwife. Maybe for #2. ;) I don't have an OB/Gyn yet either though so we'll see.

Hey mama, why not get it right the first time ;) ? I sure wish I had, and I even had CNMs. The homebirth midwives I talked to charge $1200 for prenatal care, birth and postnatal care. My last pregnancy cost well over $10,000. Not that that should make the decision for you, but good midwifery care is so much safer than what OBs do in my humble opinion.

In Indiana we have medicaid that is available to low-income or uninsured pregnant women, for health care related to preg and birth. It's good insurance, with minimal paperwork. I used it last time for a hosp birth and am getting on it again even tho I'm planning a home birth this time--of course it will save my financial butt if I end up in the hosp for some reason, but mainly it pays for my 3 visits with the backup OB, any bloodwork, prescrip prenatal vitamins if I want them, etc etc. It will save me a substantial amount, while still keeping the taxpayers' share light....:)
I don't know if you have any such in CA, but you might find out. If you did need a transport, it wouldn't help to be worried about money. (Don't get any ideas about Indiana, we're usually not this civilized here....)

They have that type of program in CA but you have to be low income and we dont qualify. Hopefully I get my nice little homebirth like I plan. This is baby #2 and despite all the crappy medical interventions with number 1, I was able to deliver him vaginally just fine so hopefully I will this time around too!

We have no insurance as well, I plan to try to get Medicaid, however I think we may be above the income guidelines, eventhough I do not plan to go back to work after this baby is born. We are planning a homebirth, but I am worried about the remote possibility of transfer.

We have insurance, BC/BS valuecare, but it doesn't cover maternity.
Funny how they try to tell us pregnancy and birth is a medical thing, an illness, you need to do it in the hospital or else you are irresponsible, but then insurance need not cover it. Strange.

OK.... I'm new to board - this is my first post... I have been frequenting another message board as well, and came across this board. I read some interesting information regarding a particular insurance company and I thought I'd pass it along. This isn't from me -- I'm quoting another post.
"...There is a provider called IAB (International Association of Benefits) that gives a corporate rate to individuals. My DF and I signed up together at only $89month. There is $35 copay per office visit and THEY PAY YOU $30day while hospitalized. It covers dental and vision as well. They are a member of the BBB. I have a whole list of doctors in my area and they cover 80% of all costs and accept ANY prexisting conditions. Too good to be true? I hope not. My card should be here this week and the coverage takes effect immediately. You may want to check them out at www.texashealthplan.cjb.net Don't let the Texas part in the web address turn you off. They are International and cover everywhere- it is just that they are a Dallas based company. The website mentions only 5 doctor's visits per year. Know that that is for regular stuff. Pregnancy is covered under their medical program called CAPS. It is included with you membership and covers all pregnancy related procedures...."
Good Luck!

Have you looked into the AIM program (www.aim.ca.gov) ? It is for families in CA who make too much to qualify for MediCal. I had it for DS2 & for this pregnancy. They charge 1.5% of your annual income (spread into 12 monthly payments). It covers everything during pregnancy (including non-pregnancy related medical stuff) and the baby until he/she turns 1 year-old (at no extra cost). Then when baby turns1 he/she automatically qualifies for Healthy Families ($6 or so a month). They don't ask any medical history either. If you have any questions about it feel free to pm me. Hope that helps! :)

Forgot to add~ there are no co-pays or deductibles other than your monthly payments.

Andie, I read the plan and it looks more like a supplemental insurance plan, they reimburse $25 for a doctor visit for example, they don't pay 100% (or 80%) after you pay the co-pay. Am I reading it wrong?
