Who hasn't had their 1st appt. yet?

I feel like the only one who hasn't had an appointment yet. My ob is on vacation, so they scheduled me for Nov. 22nd. I was really surprised that they didn't want to see me sooner since I was high risk the last pregnancy.

My first is today and I'm 10 weeks. I suppose I could have been seen earlier, but I didn't make up my mind on which midwife to use until last week. The bright side of having a later first appointment is that you have a greater chance of hearing/seeing the heartbeat without having to wait 4 more weeks. Nov 22 will be here before you know it!

I am seven weeks and i am waiting for a call from the mw for the introductory interview....which is only slightly nerve wracking :LOL

i have seem my reproductive endocrinologist, but i still haven't had my first appointment with my midwife yet. i need to call and make an appointment....i already feel like a bad mom...lol

I haven't even picked my midwife yet - stressing out about it a lot! I have interviewed one group but I wanted to meet more, so I feel really weird that I haven't seen anyone yet. Hopefully very very soon!

I'm seven weeks along now and I'm still trying to find a "midwifery friendly" physician. We plan to have a homebirth attended by a midwife, but I'll need to have a back-up doctor. Midwifery isn't really recognized here in Nova Scotia so it's tricky. I really should get going on this! Thanks for the reminder.

You might want to do what I'm doing- don't tell the OB. Talk to your midwife and find out what OB's her clients normally use, then go to one of them and just don't come out and say you are having a homebirth. If for some reason you need to transfer to the hospital during labor, just call or go in as if you had planned on doing it anyway. Hospital transfers are rarely a life or death emergency (from what my mw says), so you can just show up at the hospital or call the doc if your midwife tells you that something crazy is happening that she can't handle.

Here where I live, homebirth is illegal for the midwife, so the doc has no idea and can't know because then he might be obligated to report it to authorities. So we will just keep it quiet and have an "oops!" homebirth!

I did go on Monday to get my blood taken for my endocrinologist. I'm supposed to call back tomorrow or Friday for the results- I take synthroid for hypothyroidism, so I have to have my blood drawn once each trimester to make sure my dosage is ok. Plus, the doc will keep an eye on my sugars since I had gd last time.

nak~~ im 8 wks and will see my mw for the first time sometime in the next few weeks. She said there really isn't much to do before then as you can't hear the heart beat and we probably won't do blood work as I allready know my blood type and RH status. We keep in touch via email though. :)

I sort of had my first appointment but not really. I went in for an u/s but that's it. My ob had told me that when I got pregnant again after the blighted ovum to come in for an u/s at six weeks to verify everything was alright so far.
After that appt the technician told me I could go ahead and make an appointment.
I didn't.
I struggled with this for a while but decided not to do tandem care with an ob and midwife. I realize should something go wrong I could end up with a doctor I've never met before, but the hospital I'd end up at is excellent so I'll take that risk. The way I see it, if I stuck with an ob and not a midwife I'd end up having the same hospital experience so who cares if I know the doctor or not. I'm a little bitter, yeah.
Another reason for no tandem care is I'd rather not go into the office once a month, wait an hour to be seen for 10 minutes, etc. It's an inconvenience unless something is WRONG with me or the baby. Yeah the heart is still beating, no I don't have any questions. Sure I'll call you when the contractions are 5 minutes apart. Been there done that.
I'd rather have the midwife come to me in my own home and have a comfortable visit and talk about pregnancy and birth the way that we see it.
I can't wait to finally meet her.
I have spoken with her at length a couple of times and am counting down the days till I can call her and set up an appointment (12 weeks is when she sees moms for the first time), then of course till our actual meeting.
I have to admit it feels awkward because I'm used to the medical way of doing things. I'm just ready to let it go though.

Interesting post, Karen -- I've been thinking about my decision to have co-care -- see a CNM at the Cleveland Clinic, while seeing my lay midwife for prenatal care, too. In a true emergency I would transfer to the hospital five minutes away, which isn't affiliated with the CC anyway. Hmmm. Need to think more on this.

I'm almost 11 weeks and have chosen a midwife, but can't find a reason to go in right now. I plan to make my first appointment sometime around 20 weeks, unless something comes up and I have questions or concerns before then. I'm monitoring my weight and blood pressure, eating carefully, taking a low dose vitamin, and have heard the heartbeat (I borrowed a dopler). My midwife is supportive of this decision, but family and co-workers seem to think I'm crazy. I don't want an ultrasound, plan to decline most testing, and know my blood type. This is my first baby, but I feel completely comfortable with this pregnancy and my health. Has anyone else made a decision to wait until mid-pregnancy for their first OB?

JSerene - I saw my MW at 10 weeks, but we didn't do anything - just filled out paperwork and talked about some diet things and I got my blood drawn, all of which didn't have to be done at all. I'll see her again at 14 weeks, so we'll listen for the heartbeat but I doubt we'll do anything else. She doesn't really believe is pelvic exams, is very low intervention, and the main reason for the appointments is for us to get to know each other. So, no I don't think you're crazy for waiting, especially if you don't need any help with nuitrition, don't want an u/s, and don't need to use a doppler.
