I am just looking for a little feedback to make sure I am not nuts.

The problem: At my OB appointment Monday (11/29), I was informed that I had a “little bit” of sugar in the urine sample that I had given when I had my blood drawn 11/18. There has not been any sugar in any of my previous urine samples (3 or 4 previous appointments) including the one on Monday. However, my doc now wants to do my GD screen ASAP because of the “little bit of sugar,” the fact that my dd was 9 lbs 15 oz at birth (40 weeks) and according to them I am overweight.

My problems with this are:
I am 5’9”, pre-preggo was at about 175 lbs, currently between 190-195 lbs. Sure I started with a couple lbs to lose and have probably gained more than “normal” but I don’t get morning sickness, so I can actually eat through the first trimester. But I am healthy, I don’t eat crap all day, and my blood pressure is normal. I hardly think that I qualify as overweight.

Second: Like I said I am 5’9”, dh is 6’1”. I am not small framed. We were both around 9 lbs when we were born. I am not going to have a 6 lb full-term baby. The hospital checked dd blood sugars at birth because she was over 9 lbs. She had absolutely no problems at all. I can obviously birth a large baby vaginally, so I don’t see this as a reason to get all freaked out.

Third: I am concerned that even if my GD test comes out normal, I will have this red flag on my chart and will be seen as unofficially and unnecessarily high risk regardless of the outcome. That is not something I want.

Questions to all of you: I am not crazy for not wanting to deal with all of this and find a midwife, am I?

Thanks,
Karla

Did you have any issues with GD in a previous pregnancy? You can just plain decline the glucose test period.

I KNOW I have issues with gest. diab. - I have with each and every pregnancy - and knowing that, I declined the torture of all that added sugar in my bloodstream, and just keep an eye on it myself. My midwife darn near flipped, because of issues in the past, but my babies have never had problems with their blood sugar, and all have been small/average sized at birth. :)

No. What will your OB want to do/ do differently if the test comes back borderline GD/ GD? I would ask.

And I would at least get a second opinion.

I agree with PP. In my research the glucouse test is not very accurate anyway, providing many false positives.
I would start by asking what your doctor would do differently if the test came back + for GD if he says nothing then the test really isn't necessary right?! and if he says he'd adjust your diet, well the GD diet is a good one to be on anyway and probably similiar to what you are eating now so it wouldn't be a big deal to just use the diet as a guide anyway.
I personally would ditch the doc. but I'm a hard core UCer lol

regardless of wether you stay with the ob or find a mw remeber you are the one in charge, you pay thier wages and you always have the right to refuse any test or procedure.
