Dh and I have a hard time agreeing on baby names. Ones I've really liked but had to give up are...

Eliza
Liesel
Annaliese
Sadie
Paula

We don't really have a problem with boys names.

Dora is one that comes immediately to mind. I've always loved the name but DH has decided that the television show has ruined it.

dh is pretty set on Lydia. I like it but its a bit too common and well known for me. I like unique names.

Some names I like that he doesn't:
Lilah
Anwyn
Ivy
Fiona
Moira
Katia
Nora

I really want "Soleil" for a girl and "Solan" for a boy. That way we can start calling the baby-in-the-belly by it's nickname now, "Sol". He doesn't like Soleil and is on the fence for Solan. AARRGGG :eyesroll .

Boden
Orin / Oren
Rowan
Benjamin
Journey
Creed

This time around he's in charge of boys' names and I'm in charge of girl's names. I like the one he picked (and the "extra" boy's name in case it's twin boys better), but like other names MUCH better.

If it was up to me, this baby would be Finnbar for a boy and Matilda for a girl. DH hates both. :crying

He's also vetoed:
Rowena
Fiona
Beatrice
Charlotte
Astrid
Phoebe
Clementine
Daphne

Cyrus
Silas
Malcolm
Oliver
Owen
Graham
Emmett
Miles
Fletcher
Lucian
Stellan

Since he hasn't made EVEN ONE suggestions, that doesn't leave us with many options. We have no idea what this baby's name will be. That's ok though - we'll see what he/she looks like before deciding!

:( My dh has vetoed: :(

Boys:
Max
Duncan
Jonah
Noah
Sam

Girls:
Nora
Shoshanah
Dora
Yafit
Noa

I've got him on the fence about Charlie for a boy, but we actually do not agree on a single boy name. Actually, not just don't agree -- I have names I like and he has NOT A SINGLE NAME he likes! If we have a boy, the child's name will just be Baby Boy! :( Fortunately, we have a few girls' names we like, so we'll be ok if that happens...I just have a strong feeling this is NOT a girl...

Everything I've ever suggested for all 3 pg's. :LOL The thing is that he doesn't come up with any ideas, so ....yea for me! I get to pick the name! :LOL :thumb

Leif.

We fought and fought over this name. I love this name. It is the coolest name in the world...but DH thinks it's a stupid hippy name. I tried to point out that we could say we're naming him after the viking conqueror, Leif Erikson, but alas...no cookie.

For a girl - Rifka. I love that name too, but he hates it.

Irene!!! It was my grandmother's name and I like it for other reasons, too. I am so bummed. :-(

Amarasmom, we need to switch dh's. Moira is one of the names he likes and I don't.

I wanted Valentine so bad for ds and no one liked it, esp. dh.

Galatea, I suggested Valentine for DS, too (and my DH didn't like it either!) Then I tried using it as a girl's name this time around and DH was slightly more receptive but said he didn't like Val as a nickname.

Just wanted to LYK I think Valentine is a really cool name!

April got vetoed, I really liked it a lot.

We had a boys' name all picked out and agreed-upon, but we're having a girl! Now we are really struggling to come up with a name.

Thanks! I thought Val was the greatest guy name. I got it from "The Birdcage" - the son is named Val. Dh didn't think it was manly enough, even though he was the only straight man in the movie. :eyesroll

I got it from "Stranger in a Strange Land", by Robert Heinlein - the main character's name was Valentine. Actually now that I think of it, that may have been his last name. No matter. :D

Why is Willow tacky?

We're pretty much set on Sadie for a girl, but my husband insists that he will call her Sarah (which will be her "official" name). Oh, and he is also on the verge of vetoing it if we don't spell it Sara, instead of Sarah.

He's vetoed Anastasia (which I have always LOVED, and would really like to use here in Sweden because they use the Russian pronunciation) and is lukewarm on Anneliese.

Like others, though, he doesn't really do any suggesting of his own, so I mostly get to pick. :)

Vetoed girls' names:
Annika
Aurora (this is now one of DD's friends, so I don't want to use it anymore either!)
Calla/Callie
Delia
Fiona
Georgia (I really like this - he says "it's a state")
Marley
Rowan
Ruby

Vetoed boys' names:
Arlo
Augustus (because I wanted to use the nn "Gus")
Bjorn
Cole
Desmond
Eli
Eliot
Zeke
Harrison
Henry
Julian
Milo
Sam
Silas
Tobias (Toby)

We both went through this name book and marked the ones we liked...that's why my list is so long, lol.

Names he likes but I don't:
Desiree
Jade
Ariel
Jacqueline
Eithne (Enya, but spelled the Irish way - I like Enya but Eithne will just give her a spelling complex, I think!)
Gabrielle
Kyra
Mallory (I think of Family Ties!)

Boys:
Dean
Victor

Middle ground:
Girls:
Isabelle/Isabel/Isabella
Maura
Sydney
Claudia
Quinn

Boys:
Diego
Finn (most favored name right now - we thought it would be DD's name since we were "sure" she was a boy!)
Jake or Jack (both kinda popular for me though, plus my uncle's name is Jack)
Isaiah (Ike)
Leo
Luke/Lucas
Owen (Dh likes Eoghan as a spelling...again I say Why?)
William

We're not even talking about names for another couple of months...if we do find out boy/girl that will at least help a little (though we'll probably want a back-up name just in case they were mistaken)

:)

DH hates Dante...but I love it. Just like last time, we had about 5 girls names that we liked equally, but couldn't think of any boys names. So this time around, I'm certain that the babe will be a boy :eyesroll

I was just at a birth where the baby girl was named Aoife (pronounced EE-fah) Fianna.

nancy926
01-28-2005, 12:39 PM
I think Aoife is the Irish spelling of "Eve". Not sure, though.

DH is mostly Irish so we looked a lot of Irish names...some of the spellings were just too much! People can't spell Sascha's name - there's no way they're going to get "Eithne".

I might be sensitive to the spelling thing because my last name, while it appears easy to spell (looks like it sounds) is constantly misspelled. I kept it when I got married and I have had thoughts of changing my name just so I wouldn't have to spell it out all the time.

Well, one of the reasons we had an ultrasound was to find out gender precisely because of the Great Name Battle with ds! We absolutely had to know because it is hard enough for us to come up with one name we agree on, let alone two.

So we know we're having a girl, and we actually arrived at a name we both love without too much angst, but some of my favorites got vetoed almost immediately:

Cordelia
Fiona
Gemma
Gillian
Linnea
Lydia (hey, it may be more common these days but I :heartbeat it)
Regan (pronounced as in King Lear - Ree-gan not Ray-gan)
Rhiannon
Rowan

Oh well. Actually, I like the name we ended up with better than these, and it turns out to be dh's great-something-grandmother's name, so all's well that ends well.

Yeah, I think it was "Michael Valentine Smith" but I am too mazy to get it off the shelf right now. Dh still hasn't read the book - maybe if he did, he would like the name. What a good association!

Also, in Ender's Game, the sister is Valentine.

I desperately want to name my little boy Mingus, or Nathan.
DH will have a bar of neither... :(

It will probably be Odin, but I can't commit to it yet. Unlike Mingus.
