Fair for International Women’s Day
to be held March 6th
International Women’s Day, observed in Australia since 1928, will be celebrated in Melbourne with a fair on Sunday March 6th, 2005, from 12 – 5pm.
The International Women’s Day Fair will take place at CERES, Lee St., Brunswick. The fair will showcase a diverse range of women’s talents, with musical acts, speakers, poetry and stalls all planned for the big day. We haven't forgotten children either, and a range of special activities have been scheduled for them too. There will also be food stalls and a licensed bar.
Musical acts include Vardos and Sam Burke; speakers include Jocelynne Scutt, and human rights campaigner Caroline Lambert of Women’s Rights Action Network; poet Sandy Jeffs will also recite her work; Chaos Fairies will perform for the children - more acts to be confirmed. Stalls will provide information about a wide range of services and sell a variety of handcrafts, clothes, jewellery, and other services.
International Women’s Day dates back to 1910 internationally, and 1928 in Australia, when a rally was held to campaign for better working conditions for women. International Women’s Day is a time for celebrating women's lives, while also recognising that discrimination against women on the basis of their gender is still widespread throughout the world. This year, our collective is organising a fair rather than a march, as we express our freedom, flexibility, diversity and fresh attitudes by continually changing the ways in which we seek to be visible. In this spirit, we are presenting an event for women to simply enjoy being women, and for everyone to celebrate women’s achievements and affirm women’s political, economic and social rights.
“With this fair, we simultaneously recognise the struggle ahead of us and offer women a warm, fun space to step back and enjoy their achievements,” says Ada Conroy, a founding member of the International Women’s Day Collective.
The collective is holding a fundraiser for the fair on the evening of Thursday the 17th of February at 7pm. We will be screening House of the Flying Daggers at Westgarth Cinema, 89 High Street, Northcote. Ticket prices are $15 full and $12 concession.
CERES is at 8 Lee Street, East Brunswick and the price of entry to the fair is a gold coin donation. All welcome!
