Okay, help Bashful and me compile a list of songs to be played at the reception after our marriage ceremony next August:D. Traditional, nontraditional, from all eras, you name it;). We're going for everything: from the L7 (or is it Breeder?) version of "We Are Family," to my favorite cheezy 80's songs by Debbie Gibson, to Cindy Lauper, Bob Dylan, and Sting songs, to more classical music, to swing songs, to "sweatin' to the oldies" type music. We've got to satisfy a diverse crowd and keep it fun! I can't wait to get some more ideas!

Okay, I'm a sappy old folkie, but this one by Kate Wolf was played at our wedding: lyrics
Kind friends all gathered round, there's something I would say
For what brings us together here has blessed us all this day
For love has made a circle and it holds us all inside
Where strangers are as family and loneliness can't bide.
So give yourself to love if love is what you're after
Open up your heart to the tears and laughter
and give yourself to love, give yourself to love.
I've walked these mountains in the rain, learned to love the wind
Been out before the sunrise to watch the day begin
I always knew I'd find you, but I never did know how
Like sunshine on a cloudy day, you stand before me now.
So give yourself to love...
Love is born in fire, it's planted like a seed
Love can't give you everything, but it gives you what you need
Love comes when you're ready, it comes when you're afraid
It'll be the greatest teacher, the best friend you have made.
So give yourself to love...
I was just gonna quote a few lines, but I really really love this song.
Sally Rogers Love Will Guide Us is another one, as is her Circle of the Sun... lyrics on demand. Mary.
You can't really dance to these, but therer won;'t be a dry eye in the place, and isn't that what weddings are all about ;)
Good luck, sierra and bashful!

Sierra - I'm a not yet a mom in Colorado, thanks for your comment in the intros! I'm from Mass. originally, CO is VERY different, but special, and I am adjusting to a different lifestyle out here!
My suggestions, cliche as they probably will be, hail from my teenage years as a 4-Her, at events around the country. These were classic hits with teens of all sorts, and lots of amazingly wonderful adult volunteers as well. Back in Mass, we always had "Movin Mike" the dj, he was the best! Enjoy your festivities!
-of course, some version of the Electric Slide
-for the more techno kids, New Order's Bizarre Love Triangle is always great
-This may not be appreciated by all, but it's a classic 4-H dance tune - ACDC Shook Me All Night Long (honest!)
-again, cheese, but the 80's That's What Friends Are For is nice
-The Carpenter's We've Only Just Begun, on the "If I Were a Carpenter" cd from early 90's it's done by Grant Lee Buffalo (not a 4-H dance song, but very wedding-ish)
Sorry, thought I would think of more, but must run here... cheers!

Oh, man! I'm loving these suggestions! Keep 'em coming. At this rate, you all will come up with the only list I need:). darlindeliasmom, those lyrics are something! Maybe we could play those during non-dancing times of the reception, like at the very end or something. elnachick, I especially love the Shook Me All Night Long suggestion. I almost forgot about that one;).
Sierra
Oh, elnachick, I forgot to mention that it sounds like you and Bashful have a lot in common. She too is from MA originally. She went to college and hung around in Albany, NY for a few years after high school, and then she moved to CO, which was a huge adjustment for her! She must have done okay, though, because even she sometimes misses CO these days. She pops onto these boards every now and then, so I'm sure you'll hear all about it.

well, I must tell you that my stuffed animal, which has bunked with me about 90% of my nights since turning 6 (I'm almost 29) is named Bashful! I thought I'd give him up after I started bunking with a human, but thankfully my partner is an understanding guy who puts up with my stuffed animal:)
Glad you liked the ACDC. Another fine selection in the slightly cliche realm might be a little Styx, after all such a day would be the best of times:)
Power of Two, Indigo Girls
My Maria - the Brooks and Dunn version. Not into country music, but it's fun and catchy
that's it for now:)

Sierra, if you want sappy, "Love is All Around" by Wet Wet Wet is great - one of my all time favourites. It was played at the end of Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Oh Sierra, do I have songs for you!!! I was just remarried this summer (8/9/01) on a beach in Kauai. It was just the three of us and then my husband's mom and two siblings. It was a intimate, wonderful event. Then we had our reception here and made our own cd's of fav. songs. Here are some:
For our wedding on the beachwe had played: True Companion by Marc Cohn, You'll Be in My Heart from Tarzan (It was the 1st movie the three of us ever went to together) and Faith Hill's Breathe. As my ds released butterflies, we had the hawaiian version by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What A wonderful World". That always makes us cry.
For our reception we had: "I think I love you"-Partridge Family, "How Sweet it is to be Loved by You"-James Taylor, "Coconut (Put the lime in the coconut....)-Harry Nilsson, "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love"-The Spinners, "I Say a Little Prayer"-Aretha Franklin, "Here & Now"-Luther Vandross, "No Ordinary Love"-Sade, Alot of K.C. & The Sunshine Band, "Love is the Answer"-Dan England, "Sexual Healing"-Marvin Gaye, Some Barry Manalow, Disco, Enya and Some Disney Songs for the kids.
I know, quite a list, but we had so much fun making these cd's together.
Have a wonderful time!
:D

well, no wedding was complete when I was a little kid without the Alleycat--I think it's from like the '40s! (and no, I'm not that old). And Philly weddings always have O Dem Golden Slippers, so all the drunks (I mean party guests) can do the Mummers Strut...
the Mummers are one thing that I gather doesn't transfer well to the rest of the country, but I've seen many a bride strutting across the floor :)

I'll always remember the song they were playing
The first time we danced and I knew
As we swayed to the music and held to each other
I fell in love with you
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance For the rest of my life?
I'll always remember that magic moment
When I held you close to me
As we moved together I knew forever
You're all I'll ever need
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance For the rest of my life?

I have to second "True Companion" by Marc Cohn. That is what I was coming here to suggest, but I see that lisamarie got to you first! It's an incredibly moving, beautiful song that fits the occation perfectly. I also like "Feels Like Home", I like the Bonnie Raitt version best, but then I've always been partial to Bonnie. I also always thought that if we were to have a traditional wedding ceremony (which we didn't) that I would play the song that my daddy wrote for me as well. It would be perfect for a Father/ Daughter dance if your into the kind of thing, but of course I would have to guess that you don't have access to that song!

This is awesome, awesome, awesome. I'm bad with names of songs and bands and singers (actually, I'm bad with names of names all around...from names of movies and actors to people I meet), so Bashful is helping me figure out what all these songs are. Anyway, keep it comin! It's great!
Good father daughter or daughter mother song: Thank You by Natalie Merchant.... "You've been so kind and generous, I don't know how you keep on giving....I'd like to thank you for it....nanananananananana...." I was supposed to have it for my daddy dance but the DJ was a drunk and forgot it so I got Don Ho.
Our song was "Memories Are Made of This" by Dean Martin
take a fresh and tender kiss
add one stolen night of bliss
one girl one boy
some grief
some joy
memories are made of this
(skipping some lyrics)
then add the wedding bells
one house where lovers dwell
three little kids for the flavor
stir carefully through the days
see how the flavor stays
these are the dreams you will savor...
That one is super hetero but sooo sweet that I had to share.
Other good songs...I think that song "Smooth" by Santana is pretty hot for dancing and I like when he sings "I would change my life to better suit your mood...you're so smooth.."
This is fun! I'll get back to you with more, and oh, try throwing in a little classic salsa and merengue.

Our wedding songs were
Groovy kind of Love, Phil Collins
What a wonderful World, dance with parents

my honey and I had an outdorr wedding , but dh hooked up a generator so we could have music -
We walked in during the opening 10 minutes of Shine on Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd - Its all insturmental. Then played a Fleetwood Mac song - Songbird. Our final song was Have I told you lately that I love you by Van Morrison.
We had a band at the wedding that played mostly Beatle tunes and my hubby and his best men played some eighties music that their band used to play in high school..... It was a blast!
Enjoy your wedding!!!

Bump. I love the ideas, and I'm still open to more! We can play this game for another 7 or 8 months...whenever anyone has any ideas:).
Love, Sierra
well, dh wanted "To All the Girls I've Loved Before" by Julio and Willie (Willie is a god) but I said no.:)

I just watched Shrek, so this song is stuck in my head, but what about,
"I thought that love was only true in fairy tales...
...and then I saw her face! and now I'm a believer"

Dh and I got married this year and we walked down the aisle to Wouldn't It Be Nice (dh is big Beach Boys fan) and I insisted we played Let's Get Married by Al Green during the reception. My friend tried to talk the band into playing Having My Baby (I was pregnant at the time) but no go, oh well.

One HIp Mama, I LOVE that song Groovy Kind of Love. I wish I had thought of that when we were picking out songs!!!
We had a list of songs until we heard Phil's remake of Groovy Kind of Love and then no other song mattered. It describes us perfectly and the original was too bubble-gum-ish to be palatable. I don't even remember the rest of the party playlist anymore.... it was really fun when she got to meet Phil (thanks to my brother who works with him now and again) and she thanked him for making such a great arrangement of that tune. He blushed... ;)
I wrote all the music for our ceremony, eleven years ago, which was fun (or fun-ny depending on whom you jabber with). Made her cry, her mom not feel so terrified her daughter was marrying a musician/writer (all her sisters married "normal" guys), and made her dad whistle the melodies all afternoon... which of course made me cry (He's a big Sinatra fan and whistled all the time until his stroke a few years back).
All that to say, you guys should make up songs for yourselves (and if you're prone to crying, let someone else perform it for you). Don't let the pros have all the fun, hey?
Dov (mazel tov in advance)

You guys are totally rockin my world with your suggestions, and Dov, I can't believe you wrote all your wedding music! Phew!
You know, I was listening to a mixed CD I have today, and I think I may have just realized what song we should do our first dance to (if Bashful can get over being too shy to dance in front of everyone). It's not very traditional, but it has really lovely words and fun music.
I have a hearing disability, but here is what I can make out of the words:
(The Cranberries)
Analyse
Close your eyes
Close your eyes
Breathe the air out there
We are free
We can be
wide open
For you open my eyes
to the beauty I see
We will pray
We will stay
wide open
Don't analyse
Don't analyse
Don't go that way
Don't live(???) that way
That would paralyse your evolution
(repeats)
La la la this greatest moment
La la la this greatest day
La la la the greatest love of them all
(repeats)
Close your eyes
Close your eyes
Breathe the air out there
Fantasize
Fantasize
We(???) are open
For you open my eyes to the beauty I see
We will pray
We will stay together
("La la la this greatest moment..." section repeats twice)
La la la la la la la la
" "
" "
Do do do do do do do
" "
" "
---------------------------
It is entirely possible I don't have the words right, given my hearing disability, so if anyone knows this song, will you tell me if I have the words right?
This song really does speak to the letting go and trusting that brought us together. And I really do feel like Bashful opens my eyes up to the beauty around me. Plus, the day we marry will be the greatest day, the greatest moment.
When she says, "we are free," I keep thinking how getting married makes me feel so free.
And our love is "great". It is so strong and steady. Not to mention that we both trust in the "higher love, the greatest love of them all," which is a lot of our foundation.
That Cranberries lyric is amazing! Do you know what CD it's from? I want to go hear it.

Dov, sorry I missed your post. I got the music from a KBCO (local radio station in the town where my parents live) Studio C live performance CD. I think they have a website, but I bet you can find the music on a Cranberries website. I believe the song is originally from the Cranberries CD "Wake Up and Smell the Coffee," but I'm not positive. Let me know what you think.
Oh, and I looked up the lyrics online, and I do have them right except for one line. After "La la la this greatest moment" she says "La la la the strangest day" (not greatest day). Hmmm...well, I guess if you look at strange as being so strange that it is perfect...;).

I love all these! Some oldies:
Al Green's Let's stay together
Love theme from Romeo and Juliet (A time for us) -- my own personal wedding first dance song)
Celebration (always gets even the fogies dancing!;) )
And Billy Joel has an awesome song to his daughter on a fairly recent CD, I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the song or the CD (starts off "goodnight, my love, I think you know what I've been trying to say" talks about tucking her in when she was little, oh gosh, just a real tearjerker. A great daddy-daughter dance song. )
And I'm sorry, all the rest just flew out of my head; at least I've got 7 more months! :love

our wedding song was sung by our friend ana
i still cry every time i even think about the song
"Home" by david byrne, but sung the Shawn Colvin way
"home is where I want to be, but i guess I'm already there..."
sigh....:crying
hard to find: Subversives by The Lowest of the Low
How about anything from Alison Krauss (if you like bluegrass)? She has such a sexy voice and very romantic lyrics. On her newest album - Let Me Touch You For A While is a good song.

Definitely the best wedding song is "Have a Little Faith in Me" by John Hiatt!:p :p
"Beautiful In My Eyes" (correct title?) by Joshua Kadison. My best girlfriend in high school & I called it our song. It is very sweet.

oooh!!! Angel Mine by cowboy junkies. This was our wedding song and it is soo appropriate in my mind.
chorus
"I can't promise that I"ll grow those wings
or make keep this tarnished halo shine
but Ill never betray your trust, angel mine"
speaking about the time the idealization is over and the "real" commitment begins!! <sigh> so romantic. :love

sierra, i am so happy for you & bashful. what a wonderful day your wedding will be! dh and i were married 7 years ago this august in beautiful santa barbara, ca., near the ocean...ahhh! i still think about our lovely day so often. everything was just perfect, as i know yours will be, too. (a bit of unsolicited advice: be sure not to skimp on the photographer, when the day is all over, and it ends fast, all you have are the pictures and your memories)
that said, songs:
i definitely second elnachick's suggestion: 'power of 2' by the indigo girls (especially because it was written as a lesbian love song, so its perfect)
dh and my song is 'the rain song' by led zeppelin. i love the words because it just takes you thrut he seasons of a relationship, and the line "upon us all a little rain must fall" really reminds us to think of the not so good times that we have stuck thru together.
more:
come to my window, melissa ethridge
song for susan, crosby stills & nash
the wood song, indigo girls
i will not forget you, sarah mc lachlan
okay, i'm drawing a blank. of course if you were having the typical jewish wedding (which i know you're not)...i think it's mandatory that we have 'new york, new york' ha ha ha.

LOL "New York, New York":LOL Cute.
My mother is Jewish so I am technically Jewish too:D. The Jewish part of my heritage is important to me, but as you have pointed out, "typical" is not a word that matches well with our wedding;).
Thanks all of you for the ongoing list of suggestions. As always, I am impressed and inspired and ready to make my CDs!

sierra, well then, how 'bout a rousing chorus of "hava nagila"?!:D
actually, i'm only half joking. i think that's one of the most fun jewish party traditions. jews and non-jews alike had a terrific time at our wedding dancing around in a circle to hava nagila. the jews got it started and it looked like so much fun that other folks got out of their seats to spectate a little closer, and BAM! one crazy jew or another would grab them by the hand and they'd be in the circle, laughing their head off.
just something to consider. ;)

Dude, if hava nagila doesn't get you up and dancing you must be made of stone!
One of my sisters has started a minor tradition of getting the 'Grease medley' slipped into the line up at recent weddings. You can't do something like that too early, but once people are on the verge of silliness it tends to push them over the edge. My college age nieces stand at the edges of the dance floor looking mortified for a short bit and then break down and join the fun.

Hey Sierra,
Thanks for this thread because I'm planning my *daughter's* wedding (this July!!)
She's planning the ceremony in a perennial garden and the reception in a nice hall. (inside ac in July)
We were thinking about a string quartet for the ceremony with traditional songs and kicking it up a notch in the reception (she has a couple of band-friends and another friend who is a DJ (and his name is DJ LOL) So gleaning a few ideas for songs is wonderful.
I'm going over to her house today to do some delicious *planning*.

"Longer" by Dan Fogelberg
"Faithfully" by Journey
"I do, I do, I do" By ABBA
OK I know those are high on the cheese factor!
"At Last" and "Somewhere over the rainbow/what a wonderful world" are both beautiful and were the wedding songs of 2 couples we know.
Good dance song:
"Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison
Edited to add: I had forgotten about "have a little faith in me" but that truly, truly is, the best wedding song ever.

This was my wedding song. 02/03/01
Shania Twain - From This Moment On
I do swear that I'll always be there. I'd give anything
and everything and I will always care. Through weakness
and strength, happiness and sorrow, for better, for worse,
I will love you with every beat of my heart.)
From this moment life has begun
From this moment you are the one
Right beside you is where I belong
From this moment on
From this moment I have been blessed
I live only for your happiness
And for your love I'd give my last breath
From this moment on
I give my hand to you with all my heart
Can't wait to live my life with you, can't wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you
From this moment as long as I Iive
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment on
You're the reason I believe in love
And you're the answer to my prayers from up above
All we need is just the two of us
My dreams came true because of you
From this moment as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment
I will love you as long as I live
From this moment on
What about Elton John-Can you feel the love tonight
Rod Stewart - Have I Told You Lately
BILLY JOEL- I LOVE YOU JUST THE WAY YOU ARE

A third vote for "True Companion" -- which if I'd heard it before DH and I married would have been our wedding song. And definitely "Have a Little Faith." We played "Accompany Me" by Bob Seger for our first dance, which will always and forever remind me of when DH and I were dating. We used the "Linus and Lucy" theme to leave the church. :Dj
Other songs -- "All My Love," Led Zeppelin, "She's the One," Bruce Springsteen, "Your Love is Better than Ice Cream," Sarah McLachlan, "She," Elvis Costello, "Get Here," Oleta Adams -- oooh, there are so many I know I'm forgetting.
Another great song is "Venus di Milo" by Canadian singer/songwriter Rob Wilson -- you can hear a clip from it at this website: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/robertwilson They cut the last part of the lyric which says "you're my lover, you're my friend." Rob is my brother-in-law's best friend, and played this song at their wedding as the processional. It was awesome. He also has a great version of "When Doves Cry" on his album. Great thread, even for those of us who are already married!

Can't go wrong with Dinah Washington's "What A Difference A Day Makes":
"What a diff'rence a day makes
Twenty-four little hours
Brought the sun and the flowers
Where there used to be rain
My yesterday was blue, dear
Today I'm part of you, dear
My lonely nights are through, dear
Since you said you were mine
What a diff'rence a day makes
There's a rainbow before me
Skies above can't be stormy
Since that moment of bliss, that thrilling kiss
It's heaven when you
Find romance on your menu
What a diff'rence a day makes
And the difference is you
What a diff'rence a day makes
There's a rainbow before me
Skies above can't be stormy
Since that moment of bliss, that thrilling kiss
It's heaven when you
Find romance on your menu
What a diff'rence a day makes
And the difference is you."
The Boss' two pals sang it during the ceremony, while a friend of mine backed them on guitar. It's a great first dance tune as well.
Our first dance tune was Sarah Vaughn's version of "You Stepped Out of a Dream."
Also, may I suggest "The Way You Look Tonight" by The Chairman (aka Sinatra) or maybe the less bombastic Nat King Cole Trio version. Both swing babe.
And Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong's duet of "They Can't Take That Away From Me." Or Pops version of "Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love)."
I'm gonna stop now before I get carried away.

Sierra, this is so much fun! Our wedding song was "Wild Horses" by the Sundays. Since our reception was in the Caribbean, most of the music was in that flavor. Stuff like "Guantanamera," "Sittin on the Dock of the Bay," and lots of Bob Marley & Taj Mahal. We also had someone playing steel drums. But some of my favorite other songs that we played were:
Don't Leave Me This Way, Thelma Houston
Knowing Me, Knowing You, ABBA
Aicha, Khaled
Bamboleo, Gipsy Kings
The Glory of Love, Otis Redding
You are my friend, Patti Labelle
Try a Little Tenderness, Diane Schuur & BB King
Mercy Mercy Me, Marvin Gaye
I'll Be Your Lover, Too, Van Morrison
Beautiful Girl, INXS
Forever Young, Bob Dylan
Betcha By Golly, Wow, Aaron Neville
Roam, B-52's
And, The Wedding Song
And I love Dinah Washington, too--especially "You don't know what love is"--but that's definitely not a wedding song! SO many great suggestions here. I would have used "True Companion" also, but it was my previous relationship's and my song--not cool to recycle in that case...

My picks are :
Indigo girls, "the wood song"
I am pretty sure this is on the swamp Ophelia CD but can't find it (because my dd has done something with it :( )
G G A7sus4 A7sus4
The thin horizon of a plan is almost clear
C(9) D G G
My friends and I have had a tough time
G G A7sus4 A7sus4
We're bruising our brains, hard up against change
C(9) D G G
All the old dogs and the magician
Now I see we're in the boat in two by two's
Only the heart that we have for a tool we could use
And the very close quarters are hard to get used to
Love weighs the hull down with its weight
G G A7sus4 A7sus4
But the wood is tired, and the wood is old
C(9) D G G
And we'll make it fine, if the weather holds
G G A7sus4 A7sus4
But if the weather holds, we'll have missed the point
C(9) D D/F# - G C D/F# - G C
That's where I need to go
No way construction of this tricky plan
Was built by other than a greater hand
With a love that passes all our understading
Watching closely over the journey
Yeah, but what it takes to cross the great divide
Seems all the courage I can muster up inside
But we get to have some answers when we reach the other side
The prize is always worth the rocky ride
But the wood is tired, and the wood is old
And we'll make it fine, if the weather holds
But if the weather holds then we'll have missed the point
C(9) D Em B7 E E
That's where I need to go
A A Bm7(4) Bm7(4)
Sometimes I ask to sneak a closer look
E E Asus9 A
Skip to the final chapter of the book
A A Bm7(4) Bm7(4)
And then maybe steer us clear from some of the pain it took
E E C(9) C Dsus4 D
To get us where we are this far, this far
(G)
But the question drowns in its futility
And even I have got to laugh at me
Because no on gets to miss the storm of what will be
Just holding on for the ride
And the wood is tired, and the wood is old
And we'll make it fine if the weather holds
But if the weather holds then we'll have missed the point
That's where I need to go
these chords were obtained from:
- Adam Schneider, schneider@pobox.com
I hope it was ok to print the chords and stuff, if not feel free to cut. Also the cranberries CD is called "Wake up and Smell the Coffee" it is so great. it is filled with happy (as opposed to the previouse one about death) because of the joy being a mother has brought into her life. How sweet is that.
good luck.

We played "The Meeting" by Anderson Bruford WAkeman and Howe when our bridesmaids walked down the aisle, and had a steel drum band for the reception...
In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel always makes me cry... such a great great song... "the resolution, of all the fruitless searches..."

How about "Could not ask for more" by Edwin McCain? or "Flying without wings" by Westlife?
And the ever requisite - "She's no lady shes my wife" By Lyle Lovett

We danced to Love's Recovery at our wedding...
Also, friends made mix tapes for us, so we just put them on.

Still here...just taking notes;).
We still haven't decided for sure about our first dance, but I'm thinking if we don't decide soon we'll default to the Cranberries song (it's what we've been practicing dancing to;)).

Maybe it's just me, but where I grew up The B-52's Rock Lobster was a wedding MUST (usually including the bride getting down on the floor and DOING the rock lobster)
Harry Connick Jr.'s It Had to be You (that was our first dance)
Sunrise/Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof if you are doing a daddy/daughter dance
and of course what wedding would be complete without Madonna's Holiday? LOL

I guess this is very traditional.... three friends sang the Shaker song "It's a gift to be simple" at our wedding ceremony. It was the most wonderful moment for me in the whole ceremony. Time just stopped.

Bumping (from waaaaay back) for more ideas. I have a wedding reception to throw for my baby brother next week and my older brother and I are having trouble. Big brother listens to heavy metal and Willie Nelson and I listen to everything but those. You would think we would have the whole gamut covered....but we're having trouble! Loving the list so far but please keep them coming.
