I am very congested and also am sneezing uncontrollably. I just want to take something at night before bed so I can sleep - I am thinking a decongestant like pseudoephedrine and an antihistamine like clorpheniramine. I am 13.5 weeks and want to sleep tonight please please please.

Some doctors say it's ok to take sudefed....to check for yourself for what's "safe" and not...see: www.safefetus.com

Lilli, I have a friend who swears by Emergen-C. Also, Cold-eeze absolutely rocks, and it's basically pure zinc. Checked with my pharmacist and mw, both said it's okay. :)

I agree with the pps. but I don't even use drugs when I am not pg.

Try some lavender oil on your pillow (under the case). That makes me really sleepy, but won't touch the congestion. I had a super-killer cold last month and taking raw garlic (just swallowing the cloves) helped me tremendously. Remember, also, that it will pass. Take care of yourself and rest.

When I called the midwives, they said I could have sudafed, benadryl, or dm cough. What a surprise!

Yeah, clorpheniramine is a class B drug. Considered as safe as it gets. Guafinesin (Robitussin) and sudafed are class C, but considered relatively safe, too.

I recently had a horrible cold, the worst I have had in a decade, and finally caved and called my OB to ask what meds are considered "safe." I was told Tylenol, Sudafed, Robitussin, and Benadryl have all been used by pregnant women for years and years without any documented ill effects.
I typically don't take anything, I hate the side effects of most cold medications, and I especially avoid stuff while pregnant, but like you, I was desperate for sleep.

I always like those nose strips when I am sick and I load up on hot teas too. And hot bath before bed gets rid of some of the aches so I fall asleep easier. I also take lots of collidal silver and echinacea to get myself over it faster. (I may have spelled those wrong but I'm sure you know what I mean)

The nose strips are wonderful throughout pregnancy, don't you think? I felt like I was suffocating every night when I laid down to sleep during my first pregnancy. This time, I've worn a nasal strip to bed almost every night, and I haven't scared away my husband with my snores one time! They are a life saver for the increased nasal mucous that comes with pregnancy.

Well, I had about 4 doses total of sudafed, and it really helped. Today is the first day that I woke up without being totally congested and I actually slept with my mouth closed, so I am all better. Still a little snotty, but fine. Dh still feels bad, though, poor guy.
