We've priced it through some companies and man is it expensive, but am not confident we could do it ourselves.

It needs to be done this spring and will use our tax return to do it.

Dh did our shed. It's not that difficult, but I think we will be hiring someone when the time comes (actually, the time came about 3 years ago lol). Neither of us like heights.

Just remember that if you do it yourself and have a problem, it is not waranteed anywhere and it will probably cost a lot to have it fixed. Dh does this for a living and often the repairs are almost as expensive as a new roof. How about doing the tear off yourself and then just paying to have it finished? That way you can save money and still cya. HTH

Gem, also get referrals if you can. Roofs are a big business and you want to make sure it is done right. From what I have heard, there are a lot of ways to cut corners that can affect the quality of the new roof. Good luck.

My parents did theirs and my husband and his step-dad did ours. It's a lot of work but I think the money saved is worth it. Of course, I wasn't doing any of the work so it's easy for me to say that!

My husband is a certified roofing contractor and if you pm me the measurements on your roof and the state you live in, I can tell you what the roof SHOULD cost you for someone else to do it if you choose to go that route, so you don't get screwed...

I found an old estimate from last year and it says my house is 25 square, whatever that means. I live in Minnesota. :)

Before being pg with ds1, I helped my dh roof some houses. I measured, cut the plyboards, and pushed them up the ladder. I wasn't into the slamming my fingers with a hammer, so he did all of the nailing. From my experience, it's pretty basic. You just lay out tar paper, from the bottom up. Then shingle from the bottome up. It's hard work, but worth the savings in $$$$$$. Go to the library and get a do-it-yourself book. You can do it!

25 square means that it is roughly 2500 square feet...

i will ask my hubby was a decent price would be for someone to do it...that way if you do go with someone , you have a jumping off point!

I'm not handy, and would never try to attempt a job like this. But after looking at houses when we were buying with an inspector, and seeing all the things that can go wrong with DIY roofing, I wouldn't advise it. If there's a problem with what you've done, it will be BIG! '

Yes, definately get estimates from a variety of places. We had part of our roof done last fall for about 3K. We had an estimate up to 10K!

The previous owners of our house had their "handyman" son re-roof the coachhouse about 2 years before they sold it to us. After about a year here, the roof was leaking like crazy and the wood in the corners was so rotted you could stick your finger through it. All the roofers who came to give us an estimate laughed when they saw the roof! They said things like, "Well, there's a failed experiment, ha ha ha!" So it was about $5500 to do a complete tear-off 3.5 years after the previous re-roofing. (For a building we hardly use.) I am the princess of dyi, but with a roof, save yourselves some money and get a pro. (Same goes for tuckpointing and big plumbing jobs, and probably wiring too!)
