View Full Version : Names?

Has anyone thought about names yes? I've always wanted Braeden for a boy and Lilli for a girl but for some reason Liam keeps coming to me loud and clear and I dont really like that name! sigh... just goes to show they name themselves. Same thing happened with dd, I HATED her name and waited till the last possible moment to fill out her birth cert and even then I couldn't bring myself to use it till she was 2 months old but it kept coming back to me loud and clear. Guess this means i'm having a boy this time? :)

We have some picked out. Our top two choices are unisex, and then one or two extra girl names. I'm having a hard time finding more boy names we like. We have a lot of names that start with Z or X. ;)
We want at least three name choices for each gender which represent different things about a child's personality... I want to look into this baby's face and see their name. Or perhaps it will just *be* the way DD Tempest was. We could not name her anything less; it would have been cruel.

I'm not sharing, though. I kept DD's name a secret online until her birth, too. People either love it or loathe it, and there's no in-between. I expect the same from our next baby! :LOL

For a girl we are probably going to use Noelle. DH's mom passed away a little over a year ago and her name was Noel (pronounced Nole). Our last name is one syllable, so I think Noelle with the two syllables goes a little better than Noel with the one.

For a boy, we have absolutely no idea, which makes me think we are having a boy. Last time we had our boy name picked out (Jonah) but couldn't come up with a girl name until the last minute. I think Jen, Julia and Jonah is a bit much on the J's, otherwise we would just use Jonah this time.

I admit I do feel kind of silly thinking of names already but I can't help it! Josh and I have decided to keep our picks a secret from family and friends. Already we have gotten some unwanted feedback about our choices. I really want to hear what names other people like though. I feel like the right name is out there but I haven't heard it yet.

I do have one question for anyone interested. What do you think about the name Gaia? Gaye is my middle name and my grandmother's first name (who just passed away). Just Gaye seems like it would bring teasing with it. But I think Gaia is pretty and has such a wonderful meaning. Would my child be teased to death with a name like Gaia?

We spent a long time TTCing this baby, so we have been thinking about names for a long time. Boys names are always easy for us, but girls names can be tough. With Ds I knew before I even became pregnant with him that he would be a boy, and what his name would be. Arawyn was harder, but when Dh and I came across the name we just knew it was right. This time we have both a boys and a girls name, though I am having a hard time with a middle name to go with the girl's name we have chosen.

If we have a boy he will be Leithan Scott. I have a feeling I am having a girl though, and if so she will be Freya. Now I just need to pick a middle name.

Kelli, I have to admit that I rarely think about how others will react to the names I choose for my children. The names just feel right to me, almost like Satori said, like my kids name themselves.

We like Eden and Daphne for a girl and so far the only one we can agree on for a boy is Jude. Dh likes plain names and I dont so we have to meet in the middle somewhere. LOL

Edited to add I love Dallin, Tallin, and Dathan but dh wont agree. LOL

We have twins running in both our families so before we were even pregnant we had two of each gender chosen.

Our girl's name is Sarah Emily and we are very confident w/ it. As for a boy's name we picked Alexander very early and have a middle name of James that we are lukewarm about.

We REALLY like the name Alexander and will shorten it to Alex however the clueless neighbors across the street named their son Alex. They kid is really cute but his parent's parenting skills leave a LOT to be desired and he's a bit of a discipline problem. Dh is seriously rethinking the choice, so if we have a boy I'm not sure what name we will end up using.

Sigh,
Christine

Desiree- Eden is dd's name, obviously we love it. She is named for my grandmother (Edna) who had passed away- her full name is Eden Neshama, which translates to Ednas soul. We hope to pick a name with as much meaning to us for our next child. For a boy perhaps Isadore (Izzy) Lev, Isadores heart- Named for Dh's grandfather. For a girl Ma'ayan Chaia, translates loosely to life spring (of water) which could take on a really nice meaning if she is born in the water.

We like weird names, so we're keeping it a secret this time...sick of family putting in their two cents about my children's names.

Turtlemum, I love Gaia! Beautiful! As for teasing, I have a friend who has a really unusual name - Layo (boy). He told me once that he uses it as an immediate personality test when meeting someone new. If they take the time to say it correctly and ask him how he spells it, etc., then they're cool. If they don't, then he knows something about them immediately. Of course, that's as an adult.

I'm totally thinking of names. It's one of the many pasttimes I have when insomnia hits at 2 a.m. and I'm trying to not get out of bed. I haven't settled on anything yet. My first DD's name came to us like magic, so maybe the same will happen this time.

Thinking up names is one of my most favorite hobbies! I'm a name geek.

I'm a traditional name-lover with a few 'odd' ones thrown -- because of saint names (as I am Catholic).

If this little bean is a boy, the name has been set (in stone!) of William Michael, to be called Will (or I have no problem with William! but no way will he be Bill!).

For a girl's name, my favorite-of-the-moment is Josephine Bernadette. Other names I like include: Agnes, Gianna, Caroline, Magdalen (though we already have a Madeline, and that's just too close in my tastes), Lucy and Louisa.

Plenty of choices even if only from that list... but I figure I have plenty of time to figure it out. Katherine wasn't named until after she was born. We were asked what we were going to name her (there were two names in the running), dh and I looked at each other, and Katherine was decided upon.

if a girl, she will most likely be Madalyn, Makenna, or Caylin

we are having trouble with the boys names......you would think it would be the opposite!! lol

Personally, I wouldn't name a child Gaia. She is my diety, but I'm guessing not yours, and it would be like me naming my child Buddha or Christ. Unless I really felt the need to name my child after the creator, I wouldn't feel it right to do that.

Although in latin cultures, Jesus is a popular name and they are usually catholic, so christ is their deity. Also, Mary/Maria is a common name but a very religious one. I believe to them it is respectful. So many different cultures and different beliefs and different perceptions....such a melting pot we live in.

Yes, but... many people name their children after the creator they believe in as a symbol of worship and/or love. Not because it sounds cool.

I have named my kids after the Gods/Goddesses I worship and respect. Kearnan is named for Cernunos and Arawyn was named for the king of the Fairies. It was common in Celtic culture to name children after certain gods as a sign of respect and devotion. It was also a way of asking that god to protect your child. Though you have to accept the possiblity that your child will show traits of the god they are named after, good and bad. If this little one is a girl she will be named for a Norse Goddess because while I am a Celtic Pagan, Dh is more drawn to Asatru.

I do not personally worship Gaia (Mother Earth has a different name for me) but I think it is a lovely name, and shows great respect for the Earth.

I really like the name Gaia. I have a friend whose daughter is named Gaia. I know that it had nothing to do with a god/goddess/deity (they're Catholic) but anyway, I've always liked the name.

Our name choices are Lucy for a girl and Jack for a boy. But we're struggling with Jack becuase we already have Jake and that might be a bit too close. We're totally set on Lucy though.

I like Gaia too. It's very pretty, and I think it's nice that it is derived from your name.

We've chosen Brynn Amelia if it's a girl, and Noah James for a boy. They are just names we like, they aren't family names or anything. I just *love* Brynn though; the moment I heard it, I knew it was the one, and I also like that it isn't popular. We had *the hardest time* agreeing on boys' names though! There were so many that I liked but that DH hated (Riley, Ryan, and Nathan are the ones I can think of now) and we both really like William (Will for short) in theory, but it's my ex-husband's name, so that's out!

I agree about the feeling that babies name themselves though; you just get that feeling, whether you like the name or not!

Wow, thanks for the support everyone! There are many reasons why I love the name Gaia the very least of which is that it is cool! I am with you on waiting to see my baby first and then deciding if the name is right for her. Littleteapot, I meant no disrespect by my post. Though just to clarify, my husband and I do practice nature based religion so we definately do worship and respect mother earth. To me it is just like someone naming there child after a greek god/godess or after a saint etc. So many names have religious meanings! Anyways, I enjoyed the interesting and diverse perspectives. Thanks again!

i've had a list of names since i was, oh, 10. :bag: i was DEADSET on my first girl being named katharine and i got that. but now i'm at a loss! dh shot down the one new name i'd thought of, so we'll have to consult the list! :LOL we're not going to find out the sex before birth this time, so we might not have a definite name until birth-- we have to make sure the babe fits the name, too! we're also going to keep the names a secret, as we got some flak for the boy name we picked last time and that seemed really rude to me.

You didn't offend me. :) I was just giving my opinion on the name. See... I seem to know a lot of people who name their children after dieties in other cultures because it "iz sooooo cuuuuttteeee" and I always feel really irritated by that. It doesn't matter if I'm not Muslim, or sikh, or Christian, or whatever... I always have felt that to name your child after a God or Goddess is something you must really relate with.
Of course, this is ALL just my humble opinion... but, If you are of that faith and wish to name your child that out of respect and honour for that diety, particularly as a blessing, then I think that's wonderful and beautiful. But I don't think it's cool to name your kids after someone else's Gods because it's cute and neat. So, I'm glad to see you clarify that. :)

Once again, JMHO - no one need take offence.

Oh I agree! I wouldn't name my child Muhammed because it would be completely disrespectful... same reason *I* wouldn't name my child Gaia (though it is a beautiful name!). It also bothers me when people name their child Christian and they do not respect the religion. But, I can't tell people what to name their children :D

I've had a list of baby names since I was a teenager so I know what names *I* like, but getting DH to agree is a different story!! I've loved :love the name Lucy forever but my last name now starts with "L" and it sounds a little silly together. So far I've got my hubby to agree on Nora Jane for a girl and Oliver Finn for a boy. I've had the name Oscar picked out for awhile and I keep hoping I'll get my hubby to cave in! My other girl choices are Delia, Violet, Stella and Iris...for a boy Elliot, Milo and Seamus (my dh already vetoed this one).

I have three girls now - Haven, Lillie and Faith - and really want to pick a name that flows with them. The only name dh and I can agree on (for a girl) is Eden. I see one Mama already has an Eden here and another has it chosen for her baby. Hmmm....is it on the rise or are we just like-minded? :) Any other suggestions that would go with my girls are welcomed and wanted!! I also like Willow but dh HATES it. Sigh. Boys are harder for me to name. It'll take me a while to settle on one I love.

I recently bought a WONDERFUL book called "The Baby Name Wizard". It's cool because you can look up a name you like - or one you've already used - and it will give you suggestions of other names you may like also.

ooh, can't believe you didn't get a ton of replies since you were asking for name help! i love your girls' names... partial to lillie especially as my beloved college roomie was lillian/lill/lilly etc. my sis has three girls and i always loved this flow -- meghan, abby and sarah grace. would you consider haven, lillie, faith and eden grace? or anna grace or even sarah grace? i am thinking about a similar sound for our third myself. my sis came up with lucie jane tonight, which would be a nod to my MIL (michelina lucille) and my mom (henrietta jane). i also love henrietta lucille -- and call her henni. but i KNOW hubby will balk, haven't even run it past him, waiting to get him in the mood, va-va-voom! (for naming you guys, settle down!!!) and for a boy -- ok, go ahead and just trash me, i know this a crazy name but... rafaele jeremiah -- for my dad (Ralph) and my favorite uncle Jerry who just died. anyone like rafe? or what other nicknames could i pull out of that one? maybe just jerry -- it would go well with robby and lucca -- double consonants??? couldn't you just do this daily till the baby comes????

Karen, I've actually been thinking about it for a couple of days. I love your girls' names, by the way! And I also LOVE Willow, but my DH hates it too. He said it reminds him of that movie with the little elves or whatever they were.

OK, my suggestions are nature-oriented, but I think they would flow: Brooke, Summer, Autumn. Oh damn, there was another one but I can't remember it! I think Eden is great too.

DH and I had a conversation about this just today. Last time around, I wanted something unique and he wanted something "not weird". He vetoed every boy name I gave him, except for Carter, which is what we chose. This time around I think he's a little more willing to do something different, but "different" to him still is pretty traditional to me. So far, some names that haven't gotten the immediate veto are:

Girl - Celia, Paige, Eliza, Corinne, Laurel, Sterling, Eva, Sabine, Camille, Giselle (I like Sterling the best, and he's open to that too)

Boy - Caleb, Evan, Reed (I like Caleb and Reed the best)

1Plus2 - I like Eden too! I think it fits very well with the names of your other girls. Conjures up thoughts of beauty as well...

OMG - that wager site is great! So hilarious!

DH and I discussed it again last night. For a boy, it will be Edmundo for his father. We'll call him mundo or mundito.

For a girl, I really like Amelie (ahhhmelie). But one of my friends pronounced the A like Amy. Short A. So I got freaked out that people would call her Amy for short, which I really don't want (no offense to any Amys here :)).

So now I'm not so sure. Should she just correct people the rest of her life? We already have to correct people with Mia. They sometimes pronounce it like Maya, which never ever occured to me before I had her and it happened. Not that I mind that much. I would still pick Mia.

In general, i think you just have to pick what you like and not worry about other people.

mariposita

girrllie - Just my two cents. My name is Andrea, but it sounds like On-DREY-uh. So I deal with people using the wrong "A" sound every day. I wouldn't even mind ON-dree-uh, but I really am not an ANN-dree-uh, kind of person. I absolutely cannot stand that name after having been called that for my entire life on a daily basis.

For Amelie, I would pronouce it right, but I might do a little test (maybe a poll here at MDC or asking around to more friends and acquaintances) to make sure that other people would pronouce it right. Just an idea...Good luck!

Girls: Ava, Mila, Sophie, Rose, Ivy, Gaia, Indira, Zara, Maeve, Scarlett, Iris,

Boys: Fox, Evan, Xavier, Finn, Oliver, Harrison, and Reed

Its easier to pick girls names I find...

Boys names are always easy for us, but girls names can be tough.

That's funny - we find it much easier to pick girl names. If we have a girl, we both agree that we would like her first or middle name to be Elizabeth. I personally love the name Emily Elizabeth, but do you think a girl with this name would be teased? (due to the Clifford connection) Also, there's a cousin named Emily so we can't decide whether to go there. An alternative would be Eleanor Elizabeth. I would like Elizabeth as a first name but have a hard time thinking of middle names that would flow well with our last name.

Boy names are *so hard* for us. Last time we could only agree on one, and now it belongs to our son. I just thought of another though - Gale (one of my favorite actors, in case QAF fans are wondering!) - but I'll have to check it out with DH.

*Edited* to say that I just talked to DH and he likes Gale too. Miracles, agreement on a 2nd boy name! :LOL

Oh, that sucks! How obvious that she chose that after hearing your dd's name. If she had already picked it she would have said something like "Oh, that's what we want to name our baby if it's a girl!" or something along those lines. When we named Haven (our oldest dd) we knew she'd be one of a very few. I went to register for a Babies On Line webpage for her and used her name as the name of the page. It was already taken! So, I went to that page to check it out and it was a baby girl (Haven is actually a boy's name) born 1 week before my Haven! There was also a woman who was in the room beside me when I had my twins that had a girl and named her Haven. That was pretty cool though because she was over 2 years younger then my Haven.

What do you all think of Fiona? DH doesn't like it because of Shrek. Opinions?

For a boy we are considering Beau. I've gotten extreme reactions to it. Either people love it or hate it. I've noticed that most of the people who do not like it are from the more southern states and those who do like it are from other areas. I guess Beau (or Bo...but we'd use the first spelling) is very "country" in the south yet here and in other places it's more romantic and refined. What do you think?
