Building a train table for DD - what kind of paint is safe?

My dad and I are recycling an old coffee table into a train table for DD. My dad is doing all the sanding, putting on the trim etc. and I'm going to paint it! :love

Just wondering if anyone knows what kind of paint is safe for DD and will hold up to some wear and tear.
