I was wondering if anyone knows of any links or sites or books I could go to to find out exactly what produce is ripe locally (upstate New York - Broome County) at what time?

After reading the article awhile back in Mothering about eating & preparing food only within your local harvest, because it's better for you, your children, and the environment, I've been interested in trying to get better about that. I've been visiting farmers markets (which I never know their schedule - it's just hit or miss for me - i'd like to find an actual schedule of farmers markets), and trying not to buy produce in the chain grocery stores.

But I'm really not well versed as to what's ripe locally at what times, because I was buying produce at large chains for so long. I'd like to plan ahead and research recipies for the coming harvest each season.

It's a long shot - but does anyone know where I could look?
(am i making any sense?...... )

http://www.nyfarmersmarket.com/farmers.html
http://www.csacenter.org/states/NYfarm.htm

I found these two links...hope they help at least with the farm market schedules! :)

As for what is ripe locally when, you could find your local Master Gardner site (or in the phone book). Ask the produce sellers at the Farm market if the produce is local. Or you could find out what "zone" you are in and from there you can see what will come into harvest when.
Sorry i dont really know where in NY you are (I am in PA)...so I cant really be much more help.

your local USDA agricultural extension office would probably be a wealth of free information...

Thank you both so much! I went to the farmer's market website and it was very, very helpful. My county didn't have info, but I got a general idea. I"m going to try the other site. And the USDA site.

Thank you! :)
