How do I tell what week I am preg?

I thought you started counting with the first day of your last period? That would put me on week 6 now. Yes, I was reading a book that said at week 6 "you may have missed 2 periods by now......" Hmmmmmm, my first period was only due 1 week ago, so that seemed way off.

Hi there!

Almost all sources will refer to pregnancy as lasting 40 weeks. That means they're counting from your "last menstrual period" (LMP). If a source is talking about pregnancy being 38 weeks (like the Dr. Sears pregnancy book), then they're counting from ovulation.

The most reliable way to tell what week you're in is to look at when you ovulated (if you know when you ovulated). Since women rarely have perfect 28 day cycles, going from your LMP can put your dates off a bit. For instance, my cycles are usually about 42 days long, and I ovulate about 26 days into my cycle. If I had calculated my due date (or my week#) according to my LMP, I'd be expecting this baby almost two weeks earlier than I should.

I've been using this site to keep track of my weeks. It's fun--it gives you a daily countdown, a "percent of pregnancy to go" and all kinds of data. Lower on the page is a personalized pregnancy calendar, week by week.

I don't know if that link will work for you, since it's my pregnancy calendar, but if you go to www.amazingpregnancy.com/duedate etc., I'm sure you could put in your own ovulation date or your own LMP (feel free to adjust your LMP so that it "fits" with the typical 28 day cycle). I think you can also just put in your due date and it'll calculate it that way.

Have fun! Happy counting! :D
