I had preterm labor with my 1 baby but not with my 2nd. I'm now pg with #3 and just had my first ob appointment. I saw a nurse practioner at 9 weeks and had my cervix checked then and all was fine. This time my ob said my cervix was long and closed but right at the opening of my vagina. So I know I shouldn't have but I had to check for myself when I got home. And indeed it was right there. It was basically has close as it is when I ovulate but closed instead of open. She is restricting my activity. So now I'm completely freaking out. I had 10 weeks of bedrest with #1 and I don't think I can handle 20+ weeks with 2 kids. She hasn't put my on bedrest but wants me back in 2 weeks to check again. Anyone have any experience with this, knowledge about cervical position in pg and if this is a really bad sign this early?

TIA, Micky

Also I'm still nursing my 3 year old ds about 2-3 times a day. Would you continue nursing or would you wean. My ob suggested weaning but wasn't going to push it. Thanks, Micky

I would continue nursing as usual, personally.

Your cervix has two openings, and your external os of your cervix might be opened a little in pregnancy if this is not your first pregnancy. The opening should also feel like a slit instead of a circle. I would think that your OB would know this, though, so I don't really see why she'd worry about it at all. The internal os should stay closed until you begin to dialate in late pregnancy.

It's just fine to check yourself, by the way, no need to feel weird about it.

Hope this helps.

Amanda

Thank you so much for your response. I believe the issue is cervical position not necessarily if it is opening or not. I'm under the impression that during pregnancy the cervix should be high and far back and mine was when I initially found out I was pg. So I guess the concern is that the position has changed? Should this be of concern? Thanks again.

My cervix was really low, I mean, lower than it ever was before (I was afraid it might fall out!), during my first trimester. As soon as baby got big enough for my uterus to move up out of my pelvis, my cervix got really really high, too high to reach with my fingers. I chose to nurse DD1 through my entire pregnancy with DD2 and had absolutely no problems from it.

If I were you, though, I'd go get a second opinion before agreeing to any more internal exams and possible bedrest. Check your cervix yourself once you start showing, and I'd bet it's up higher.

Mine was really low in my first trimester as well. I agree with stafl that it felt almost prolapsed. It came forward a bunch after I found out I was pregnant (I was checking because of FAM so was very familiar with the pregnancy).

I hope you feel better.

Thank you so much. Between you both and my dh's reassurance I am feeling much better. My dh and I just had a huge discussion and we are going to look for a midwife. I have stuck with my ob because of my past preterm labor history but I have come to realize she does over react a ton. Last pg she told me without a doubt ds had a congenital heart defeat, which he does not. I'm not sure why it took me this long to realize I need a more hands off approach. I'm still nervous about it but certainly a second opinion is necessary. Thank you both again so much. I'm going to relax now and enjoy my evening.
