1st of all, I should mention that we sleep in a family bed :fambed21 and 12-month-old DS spends only about 15-30 minutes a month in his $299 crib (grandparent gift) while he is awake for playtime. 15-30 minutes/month is more than enough for DS!
Late last night DH and I put DS in his crib so..... well, ......
:innocent :shrug
Well, DS had his silly songs on and was mesmerized, and possibly even going to sleep. :jaw I know, crazy! But I did see him actually lie down on his tummy!
The next thing we knew, he was shrieking. Baby's leg was stuck in the evil crib! :bawl DH and I panicked --- it would not come out. After a few minutes of struggle, we were able to position the leg in a way that released it.
Our poor DS has bruises on his leg today! :(
I have often questioned the safety of our family bed, but this reaffirms my decision to have DS sleep with us until he is ready to leave!
I can't be the only one who's had an "evil crib" experience, can I?

My ds has gotten his arm stuck in the tiny crack between the mattress and rails (he plays in there while I take a shower). Imagine all the poor babies that got their heads stuck in between the rails before they regulated them! I heard someone telling a story about using butter to get the kid's head out??? Sick, evil cribs.

My aunt slipped between the rails and mattress and actually sufficated and died, this was in 1965. She was 9 months old.

I'm so sorry about your Aunt. :guilty Oh, what a horrible thing to happen!
Makes me grateful it was only DS's leg that got stuck. Still, I think we'll not use the crib much until it converts to a toddler bed and DS has another means of escape from it.

We have mesh bumpers up on our crib because DS kept getting his arm stuck, they seem to help.

Jenny- Thank-you. I never met her, my mom doesn't have any memories of her because she was only 21 months old when she died (My aunt was born on my mom's first birthday). I'm terrified of cribs for this reason, even though I *know* they are safer, I'm still terrified of them. Totally irrational I know, but...ya know.

I'm sorry that happened to your aunt, that is awful. :(
My had my baby girl in her crib for about 15 minutes. I was working on something and she was really happy so I turned to what I was doing and just kept on and was interupted by her screaming all of a sudden because her leg was stuck. It was such a bummer, I felt so bad, she was so very happy before that happened! I just use the crib for a changing table, she hasn't slept in it not even once and now she doesn't ever play in it anymore either.

My evil crib story isn't all that evil. We have the same crib that 20 yo SIL had as a baby. I've never really felt comfortable with it (because of incidents like the ones above), and I never really intended to use it anyway. I accepted it because my MIL recommended we have options. She likes options. She's very supportive of the family bed. When dd1 sleeps over her house she often sleeps with her gp's.
Anyway, so we set the crib up for dd1. She *never* slept in it. But we kept it up until she got a toddler bed (which she occasionally slept in). Then we took it up to Maine and put it in the attic of the family cottage.
When I was pg with dd2 we brought the crib back from Maine. It's sitting unassembled, behind me in the computer room, which will eventually be dd2's room when she moves out of our bed.
The evil crib seems to follow us around. It clutters our house. We can't get rid of it, because we need "options". Hopefully I can convince dh that we should freecycle it before we have another baby. I'm sick of seeing it around.
