Does any one know much about polyhydroamniosis or extra amniotic fluid. I gained 3 cm in a week (I am measuring 46cm at
40 weeks). It appears to be a large baby but my midwife thinks
this rapid gain is due to PHA. I have been fairly consistent throughout my pregnancy. Now a rather large jump.
I was also borderline gest. diabetes but didn't fit all the criteria.
I am scheduled for an ultrasound,BPP and API on the 9th.
Hopefully I won't go that far.
Any one have any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Lisa
I would have a level 2 ultrasound if I was you. Sometimes extra fluid has to do with something going on with the baby. I don't want to worry you, but I would have it checked out for your own peace of mind.
Edited to add: I'm not a midwife or doula, I just have personal experience.

a very small fraction have some abnormality of the trachea or gastrointestinal system and brain. It is quite rare. The largest cause is GD, but the number with idiopathic polyhydramnios (no know cause) is quite high. Like 40% maybe? I forget. You can look through some papers on medline, etc. But lots of women have it happen for no reason, and with no major complication. One of the popular midwifery sites had a section of delivering a poly. pregnancy which you can probably look for. It may just be a large baby, too.

I have personal experience with having extra fluid. I measured 6 cm's ahead starting at week 28. Kailey was a big baby and I had extrtra fluid. That's why I measured so far off. Kailey was and is super healthy, nothing wrong with her.
We found no annoma;ies and that things were fine through a regular ultrasound.

I had exrtra fluid with two of my preg. and both ended in preterm deliveries. There was no know cause either time. Because labor started so early the first time I was scheduled to have the fluid drawn out with an amnio needle (lovely) but went into labor on the day of my first appointment. I was 34 weeks and measure 50 cm. It really sucked. this time i delivered at 37 weeks and measured 48 cm. Wasn't nearly as uncomfortable as I was the first time. Both time baby was healthy and fine (first had problems related to being early but nothing major).
