I am very interested in finding some resources about age appropriate behavior and development, as it has become a great way to help my DH understand what is reasonable and what is unreasonable to expect from our 18-month-old. He is very open to the discussions we have about what we can expect and how to handle issues, and it is making a huge difference in him parenting more GD than he was raised :thumb , so I just want to be able to keep it up as our child(ren) grow(s). I have found a few websites, but was wondering if anyone else had any good links or favorite books that I could have on hand. Basically, I'm looking for resources for things like:

Development of impulse control

Development of empathy

Development of socialization skills

Development of verbal instruction comprehension and follow through (though at 31 I still sometimes lack this! :wink )

Hitting, tantruming, etc. and what they mean, and why they're important developmentally

Helping express emotions without squashing them, but giving appropriate direction for outlets...

...and things along those lines. Thanks much for any help anyone can give!

Good info to have! :) Here are some links, some I have experience with, but some I don't so I can't vouch for all the info.

Thanks very much, UnschoolnMa; good stuff to add to my growing collection - The Piaget one with the shootoff links was very interesting!

Anyone else? :D

There's also some good books by Ames and Ilg called "Your X Year Old." Cheap used on amazon.

This is a neat overview of preschooler behavior: http://gordonneufeld.com/preschool.html
Lots of articles on development: http://www.naturalchild.org/home/

A very good 'stages of development and what parents can do during this stage' book: Building Healthy Minds, Dr. Stanley Greenspan

I use Becoming The Parent You Want to Be all the time for this very reason. It explains what they are doing a why. When I understand why, I can empathize so much more!
