View Full Version : The name Sally - stand alone or knickname?

The pink lines on my :+ have barely dried and I'm already thinking about names. :innocent

We are totally set on a boy's name (carried over from dd) so we're just focusing on girl's names this time around.

DH and I both love the name Sally. But we like names that have a longer version (like our dd is Lilia but we call her Lil/Lily).

I know traditionally Sally is a knickname for Sarah but we already have a niece named Sarah so that's not an option.

Does anyone know of any pretty names that could have Sally as a knickname?

Thanks!!
:love

~Erin (who realizes how silly it is that she is already obsessing about names ;) )

I work for a company that publishes baby name books. Here are a few longer names that begin with "Sal" from one of our books:

Salali
Salama
Salena
Salima
Salina
Salliann
Salome
Salvadora
Salvia

I know exactly what you mean about wanting a longer "formal" name even though you know you want to call your potential DD Sally. I feel the same way, and I'm choosing names with the same strategy.

That is so beautiful! Sally for short is cool, and your (potential, future) daughter can choose what she wants to go by.

Thanks Christine. What a nice list!

Is Salome -- Sal---ome (with a long o)?

I like Salvia but I worry that it would get misprounounced/mis-spelled as Saliva. :(

My real favorite is Magnolia and call her Maggie but dh just isn't digging it.

I like the Magnolia/Maggie idea.

Also like Sally on it's own. Though I understand your concern about wanting a more formal name. What about giving her a different first name, having Sally as the middle name, and then using her middle name for everyday use. When I lived in the South it seemed like lots of people did this.

Besides the issue of your neice being named Sarah, that name is super popular right now--#12 on the SSA popular baby name list.

About Salome, when I was in college we read a novelette by Lou Andreas-Salomé, a woman who hung out with Nietzsche. We pronounced her name saw-low-MAY. Though I *think* I have heard this name in other contexts, rererring to other people, as suh-LOW-mee (kind of like the deli meat, salami). Sorry I am not more help!

i don't think salome would work for us (however it's pronounced) -- we have a jewish sounding name (and we're not jewish) so i think salome with our last name would be too much.

i was just having some fun looking through a baby name book in the A's trying to find an "Al" name that might work with tacking an S on the front!

good thing i'm spending my whole day obsessing about names. :eyesroll i'm sure i'm not going to have any time to figure this out between now and may!! :LOL

hmmm...hadn't thought of that.

Try a search at a webite like these. You can choose, boy/girl, first and last letter, # of sylables, origin, etc. There are so many sites with names out there, these are some of the lesser known ones.

I've wondered the same thing about the name Molly.

i love the name Sally. I didn't know it was short for Sarah. Maybe you could put an "ie" at the end instead of a "y" to make it more formal.

it rhymes with Cali and that's my dd name. :D

Happy naming :thumb

Salara (Or Sallara?)
Salihah (I'm guessing you pronounce this sa-LIE-ah? or maybe sa-LEE-ah)
Salonia
Salvinah
Salmah
Salinah

I feel like there must be names that end in "sali"...or you could make one up: Amsali? Ansali?

Me too. DH's co-worker just named his daughter Molly....we were both like...nice name but....what could be a longer version of it?? :scratch

Oooooo.....that could be a fun way to go. Hmmmm.....

Molly is high on our list of girl names. (I think) it's traditionally a nick-name for Margaret or Mary, but we like it as a name all on it's own.

BTW I love Salama - it means "peace" (it's used as a greeting in Swahili speaking countries)

In England Sally is a stand alone name. I've known quite a few Sallys, and liked them all, so I think it is a great name.
