I am going to be testing for the GBS today. I was positive with #1 and recieved antibiotics at the birth center - ended up transporting and had a csection btw. This time around I am planning a homebirth and I am starting to think about my options. For those of you who did the hibiclens wash -
How much hibiclens do you put in the peri versus how much water and how exactly do you squirt it in there? Does it have to be done just on the outside or do you have to squirt in the inside of the vagina?
Thanks so much!

I did the Hibiclens wash with ds- my midwife recommends putting about an inch of Hibiclens in the peri-bottle and then filling it up with water. Since GBS colonizes in the lower part of the vagina, you don't need to douche with it or forcefully squirt it in your vagina- I just sat on the toilet and squirted it up just a bit- using my fingers to make sure the solution got inside. and you want to make sure you wash the perineal area with it too. My midwife recommends doing a wash every 4 hours or so after your water breaks.
It worked well for me, ds showed no signs of GBS at all. I really like this approach because I didn't feel comfortable doing nothing (even though the risk is slim to none) because I had UTI's caused by GBS in the past so I knew my level of colonization *might* still be a bit high (although I hadn't had a UTI while pregnant).

Can someone tell me where you get the hibiclens wash...and is this similar to what I have read on chlorohexiderm online?

You can get hibiclens at any drugstore. I got some at walgreens.
Hibiclens is the brand name for chloroxihedrine or whatever the spell is :)
BTW I tested negative so I wont be doing anything yeahhhhh :thumb

So glad you tested negative. At my last appointment the mw sort of threw me for a loop as she said that she was comfortable with me NOT testing (I was with them for two previous births) anyhow....I was going in there expecting to be tested...OOPS! So, I basically had to come home and read everything as I didn't know what my decision was.
I tested negative with both my first two. Now, I am wondering...should I just go ahead with the test this time. I think I have to ask my midwives if I can just use the hibiclens then if I do test positive....or at least if I don't have any risk factors.
The issue I have too is that my last labor was rather quick...! The midwife got there and she was born a little over an hour later. The first one was relatively quick as well...the mw got there and I think she was born 4 1/2 hours later. I think because of that the mw thinks that even if I DO test positive (unexpectedly) this time that there wouldn't be enough time to give antibiotics anyhow...KWIM?

I was pos with my last. My MW put about an inch of hibiclens in the bottle and filled it with water and told me to rinse with it after using the toilet. I did not douche with it at all. I think she also used it internally once while I was in labor, either mixed with the lubricant or in place of. (I don't have many internal exams in labor) I probably would not test if offered the option, from what I understand the status can vary from pos to neg in the same day. (This is from a swab test, colonization in the urine may signal a systemic infection.) What is your comfort level on the issue?
