I am 7 weeks along and have gained 5 lbs in the last 3 weeks! What the heck? Has anyone else experienced this? I work out every single day for an hour. Sometimes 2 hours. Walking, hiking, swimming and yoga. Yes, I'm eating constantly because the pregnancy has me starving but I don't indulge in sweets. My clothes don't fit differently. I'm just freaked out because Dr. Sears says you should only gain about 4 lbs in the first trimester and I'm only half way through the first trimester and have already gained 5! Scary!
My boobs have gotten huge but could they actually gain 5 lbs?
What else could it be and has anyone else experienced this?

with my first pregnancy i gained a lot in the first trimester too! is this your first? i wish my breasts could be like last time. :( now i have nursing boobs that aren't nearly as pretty and full... :p
basically don't worry too much about those arbitrary numbers you should be gaining...your body will gain what it needs! i gained a total of 50 pounds with ds and lost it all... :D without even trying!

I usually gain about 15 pounds in the first trimester. It is how my body responds and it doesn't make sense beyond that my body changes it's energy homeostasis during pregnancy. I am always happy when I can bust out the maternity gear because that in between stage is just plain uncomfortable.

I gained 75 my last pregnancy :bag: And I swear I wasn't sitting around eating hohos or anything! I did have a lot of swelling, so I think a lot of that was water.
However, I started gaining big time from the start. Maybe even 20 lbs the first trimester? It could have been more. Scary. It all came right off, except the 20 I had to start with! I am committed to gaining less and eating a bit less. I was just so hungry!

Boy am I glad to read this! I don't lead too sedentary a lifestyle myself and even before I found out I was PG I was walking everywhere, lifting free weights, eating healthily and weight that I'd gained in the past year and a half just wasn't budging. I do feel more confident now that I'll be able to take it and the PG weight off pp though. I'm quite inspired ladies. This is my 1st PG too and I was talking about how I have had to buy maternity clothes already on another thread b/c my clothes are so uncomfortable and I'm only 6 weeks along! :bag: But oh the comfort... :drool

yeaaahhhhhh, I brought down my ol' maternity clothes from the attic yesterday but I'm going to try to hold off wearing any of them for a bit longer. My normally loose jeans were rather snug - yikes - and I'm only 5 weeks along. :blush Of course it could have been all those chips and s'mores I ate camping last weekend, but I feel bloated and convinced it's the preg.

Bristow, I too always gained about 15 pounds first trimester, despite healthy eating & exercise. Don't worry about it! Those numbers in the book can really do a disservice. I gain 50 pounds w/each of my pregnancies (and took it off each time too). If I listened to the books, they would have said I should only have gained 20-30.
It's fun, and yes very comfortable, wearing maternity clothes. Enjoy your growing pregnancy body. It is an amazing experience.
