I would start interviewing immediately, but you don't "require" a prenatal visit (unless you have things you want to talk about) until about week 12.

I saw my homebirth midwife right around 14 weeks for the first time. I made the appointment when I was about 8 weeks along.

Now that I"m thinking about it though, our initial meeting was more of a screening. We had met with another midwife and DH and I needed to compare notes before we hired our current MW. So our initial prenatal visit was a little over a month after our first meeting with her.

And now we love her and my EDD is next Tuesday.

Contact/interview midwives as early as possible. Some families interview and choose their midwife before they even conceive! It would suck to be turned away by the midwife you prefer because she's already booked up for the month of your due date....

As early as possible, but even if you're far into pregnancy now, you can still switch to a midwife. We decided at 30 weeks we wanted to switch and made the switch at 32 weeks. I was afraid we couldn't do it that late in the pregnancy, but it wasn't a problem! Next time, I plan on going to my midwife from the pregnancy test on.

That is what DH and I did. It was a good idea.
