I've made my car seat choices by consulting Consumer Reports guide on safety. It was just too overwhelming going in and looking at all the seats on the shelf, this really helped me narrow my decision (and made me feel like I was getting the safest seat I could afford).

The site is http://www.consumerreports.org/main/content/display_report.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=579533&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=333145&bmUID=1112801656727

I had something wrong with that link. This one seems to work though.

It looks like the site is having difficulty right now, but I also read the consumer reports review and basically the top ones were britax and the evenflo triumph or titan. I too was too overwhelmed to look into a million different seats so just narrowed it down to those. I checked out the evenflo ones when we were at the store, since they're cheaper and still rated high for safety, but the clip on the front was hard to undo, and it didn't have the velcro on the sides to hold the straps back while you're putting the kid in that the britax seats have, so we're just going to get another Roundabout. Plus, MIL said they would buy us the carseat as a gift, so hopefully that will actually happen and we won't be out $250- although I think we'll but it wherever I can find it cheapest online and then just have them reimburse us if they want to help us pay for it.

We are starting with a Peg Perego bucket (mostly due to crappy winter weather here) and then will switch to a Marathon around 20. I figure I can buy 1 seat to last until 65 or a convertible and then booster which could almost equal the cost of the marathon.

Our insurance gives a $50 rebate for a new caseat purchase which was a bonus. And you can get the seats new on ebay for cheaper than you can get them at babies r us. It equals about a $50 savings if you catch a good buy online, even with shipping.
